SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- As more people grow weary of the coronavirus pandemic, the race is on to get more test kits in the hands of medical professionals. Sorrento Valley's Hologic Diagnostic Solutions is making a big dent in the test kit shortage. Staying at home and away from others is Gov, Gavin Newsom's hope to curb the spread of COVID-19. But that does not curb fear. Many San Diegans still wish to get tested, but health officials say there just isn't enough. RELATED: FDA warns of fake coronavirus home test kits“The testing situation is frustrating for everyone," Dr. Eric McDonald, Medical Director of Epidemiology and Immunization of San Diego County, said. "There is a shortage of kits.”Since the Chinese government released the COVID-19 genetic sequencing on Jan. 8, 2020, medical diagnostics companies have been working around the clock to invent a new, efficient test. One of those is Hologic Diagnostic Solutions in Sorrento Valley. "We started doing exploratory science to figure out, what is the virus, and what can we do to help?" Kevin Thornal, President of Hologic Diagnostic Solutions, said.RELATED: Q and A: Fo

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- While the visible reminders of local wildfires may be gone, San Diego fire officials say what’s left over can still cause a lot of problems especially as the region expects to get rain this weekend. After an intense wildfire happens, the burned vegetation and charred soil forms a water repellant layer that blocks water absorption -- which means the next time it rains, there’s potential for flooding.Cal Fire wants to remind residents to prepare before the rain arrives.Thomas Shoots, a spokesperson for Cal Fire, said, “Anyone near the Valley Fire needs to be prepared for any type of debris or mud flows. They need to have sandbags and the area around their home prepped so that everything looks OK.”In September, the county gave residents free supplies to make sandbags so people could begin their preps for the rainy season.County information on free sandbag availability can be found here. The City of San Diego is also offering sandbags for residents. They’ll be giving them out at select locations on Friday from 1 p.m.-7 p.m., and this weekend from 12 p.m.-2 p.m. Click here for information on city sandbag availability.Anyone who picks up sandbags is asked to wear a mask and have an ID ready. 1230

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With California's regional stay-at-home orders and cancelations of annual holiday events, families won't be jumping into the same festive season as years past. But there are still some pandemic-proof activities to enjoy this month. This year, families are tasked more than ever with thinking outside the traditional holiday box to find some fun. While the pandemic has strained those efforts, virtual experiences, drive-thru events, and charity can help keep the season bright:Enjoy holiday light displays: The easiest way to enjoy the holidays is something many families do every year. Hop in the car and take a drive around your neighborhood to enjoy the light displays. Families can enjoy looking at the hard work by their neighbors to dress up some seasonal cheer, while staying safe and socially distanced in their vehicles. There are also some drive-in events that allow visitors to purchase tickets online and navigate through a setup event — without having contact with anyone from outside their household.Check out ABC 10News' list of light displays in San Diego to see.Virtual holiday plays and visits: Festive celebrations of the season are still spreading cheer, just online. The Old Globe Theater is bringing "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" to the radio this year, while the La Jolla Playhouse will bring A Christmas Carol online too. Chula Vista's The Moonlight is also hosting "A Miracle on 34th Street" across radios this year. Those hoping to visit Santa before the big day can also talk to the big man online this month.Donate to a cause: Part of celebrating this season is giving back to others and there are several ways to help. Feeding San Diego and the San Diego Food Bank are in need of donations and support as the agencies serve more residents than ever before. The Red Cross and San Diego Blood Bank are also in need of donors as well, and the Salvation Army may not be out in full force with red kettles, but it welcomes any support. ABC 10News has a quick list of ways to give back here, but there are several local charities worthy of anyone's help.Annual toy drives are also an important cause to support this season to help families around the county celebrate the holidays. Play gift-giver and find a local drive to donate a gift.Lace up your shoes for a holiday race: Every year, San Diego runners hit the pavement and run in the San Diego Holiday Half, San Diego Santa Run, and Jingle Bell Run to capture their next personal record or just stay in shape. While the in-person gatherings for each race are canceled, runners can still log their participation virtually and enjoy the same race day swag they would receive at the traditional event.Holiday movies and activities at home: We've all been spending a lot of time at home. But during the holidays, movies we've come to love beacon us to the living room to revisit our favorite stories. We've put together a list of holiday movies and when you can catch them this year.Since many of us have become professional bakers and bread makers since the pandemic started, now's the perfect time to flex what you've learned. Holiday cookies and treats are a must this year and the perfect way to brighten the season. If cooking isn't your thing, crafts are a great way to keep kids busy and add decorations to your home. 3325

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With San Diego Comic-Con fans missing the convention in-person this year, some have instead left a tribute across the street from the convention center.Fans of the pop culture event recently began leaving flowers, t-shirts, and notes of their memories from past Comic-Cons outside TinFish — a popular site for people watching and off-site SDCC experiences every year.Chris Morrow, one of the organizers of the shrine, says the tribute was organized as a way for fans to continue connecting over their shared love of the convention.RELATED: San Diego Comic-Con 2020: What to know about SDCC@Home"Residents from San Diego County got together to show love and respect to Comic-Con. The popular arts convention is online this year and residents wanted to let everyone know San Diego Comic-con is not forgotten and we will see them back in person 2021 in San Diego," Morrow wrote. She says that they're asking fans to socially distance and drop off a note or flowers until Monday, July 27. Then, notes will be cleaned up and sent to Comic-Con organizers."We hope this brings a smile and a little SDCC to our city in 2020," Morrow added.Morrow says while some items have been stolen or torn down, they are working to keep it maintained. 1256
