SYDNEY, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- An Australian national survey has shown most respondents have been unsatisfied with their employers and managers on supporting employees with mental illness in the workplace, the charity Sane Australia said on Thursday. The survey, Australia's Working life and mental illness, by the national mental health charity Sane Australia, found that 95 percent of the 520 respondents thought employers and managers needed education on mental illness and how to manage its effects in the workplace. While more than 60 percent said their mental illness had not been a barrier when finding a job, the majority said that they haven't got any support from their employers or mangers once they were at work."The survey paints a concerning and unsatisfactory picture of Australian workplaces," SANE Australia's Executive Director Barbara Hocking said in a statement on Thursday."Many employees, including those who care for a family member with a mental illness, are being disadvantaged by a lack of flexibility, such as being able to work part-time, to work from home at times or to have adjustments made in the workplace," she said.According to the survey, two thirds of people reported to have revealed their histories of mental illness to their employer or manager.
BANJUL, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Deputies at the Gambian National Assembly (parliament) on Friday passed a new bill entitled the "Food Safety and Quality Bill 2011".Under the new act, food operators are obliged to ensure food safety, quality production, processing and distribution within the business under their control and that their products must satisfy the requirements and regulations as demanded.Submitting the motion before deputies, Vice President and Minister for Women Affairs Isatou Njie-Saidy warned that the well- being of "our citizenry is at stake.""Giving our continuous drive to place health care on top of our development agenda, we call on all and sundry to join the bandwagon in the implementation of this bill," she said. She told deputies that the bill and the establishment of the Gambia Food Safety and Quality Authority is consistent with the regulation worked out by the West African bloc ECOWAS on the health and safety of plants, animals and food in the region. The Gambia Food Safety and Quality Authority being established by this bill will be the sole national competent authority having unitary responsibility for food safety and quality, she declared."In order to achieve the general objectives of a high level of protection of human health and life, measures applied under this Act shall be based on risk assessment," she added.

BERLIN, June 5 (Xinhua) -- German authority said on Sunday that bean sprouts might be the "most convincing" source for the E. coli outbreak which has killed 22 people and infected more than 2,000 in the Europe.Gert Lindemann, Agriculture Minister of the state Lower Saxony, told reporters in a press conference that restaurants and food outlets where the cases of E. coli had been reported all had received shipments of the particular bean sprouts.A related company in the Uelzen region has been shut down and its products have been recalled, he said."It is the most convincing... source for the E. coli outbreak," Lindemann said. Although a conclusive laboratory analysis will not come out until Monday, current indications were strong enough to issue a public warning, he said.Authorities have been racing to track down the source of the pathogen since the outbreak, which has infected people in 12 countries - all of whom had once traveled in northern Germany. More than 600 of those infected have developed Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a potentially deadly complication attacking the kidneys. The source of E.coli was first thought to be the cucumbers from Spain, which has caused huge loses for Spain farmers. However, this conclusion was overthrown by Laboratory tests in Hamburg on Tuesday.
BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Scientists have been making great efforts to show how harmful coffee is to us, though no evidence yet. A latest study may be reassuring for coffee-lovers.Women who drink caffeinated coffee are less likely to be depressed than those don't. And the more they drink, the lower risk of developing depression, according to a study published Monday in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Researchers of the study tracked the health of over 50,000 women aged between 30 and 55 in 1996 for a decade and recorded their mental health and coffee intake periodically. They find that women who drank two or three cups of coffee per day were 15 percent less likely than those who drank little or decaffeinated coffee to be depressed. And for those who drank four or more cups, the risk of developing depression reduced by 20 percent. The reason why coffee could protect depression is not clear. But the scientists from the Harvard University speculated that caffeine was the key player. More research is needed to show whether caffeine can ward off depression. It might be that not-depressed people tended to be more activated and the habit of coffee drinking just fit in their lifestyle. However, the depressed ones, who might suffer from sleeplessness, chose not to drink coffee because the caffeine might exacerbate it."There's no need to start drinking coffee," said Dr. Alberto Ascherio, the senior author of the study, "The message is that coffee is safe to drink, with no adverse effects. That's really all that can be said."
WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Observations from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have revealed possible flowing water during the warmest months on Mars, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced Thursday.Dark, finger-like features appear and extend down some Martian slopes during late spring through summer, fade in winter, and return during the next spring. Repeated observations have tracked the seasonal changes in these recurring features on several steep slopes in the middle latitudes of Mars' southern hemisphere."The best explanation for these observations so far is the flow of briny water," said Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona, Tucson.McEwen is the principal investigator for the orbiter's High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment and lead author of a report about the recurring flows to be published in Friday's edition of the journal Science.Seven such sites on the planet have been confirmed, with 20 more possible, McEwen said."What makes these new observations so interesting is they occur at much lower latitudes where temperatures are much warmer and where it's actually possible for liquid water to exist," said Arizona State University geophysicist Phil Christensen, one of the scientists who studied the images beamed back from the orbiter. The study does not prove water exists, but identifies it as the best explanation. It's worthwhile to think about alternative reasons for these observations, but none seems to fit as well as briny water, McEwen said."I think it's going to be laboratory experiments on Earth that give us the best confirmation or refutation," he said.
