All it takes is one event to potentially spread the coronavirus to hundreds of people, directly or indirectly. That is what played out in August at a wedding reception in Maine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.All told, the CDC identified 177 coronavirus cases and seven fatalities linked to a wedding in Maine.Here is how the CDC explained what took place:On August 8, one day after the wedding, a guest from the wedding began feeling ill with coronavirus symptoms. This person, however, did not get tested for the virus until August 13.Meanwhile, another attendee of the wedding began feeling ill on August 8 and 9 with a fever, chills, cough, myalgia, runny nose, and headache. This person, a health care worker at a long-term care facility, worked on August 11 and 12. The CDC says this person was tested for the coronavirus on August 13 and received a positive result on August 18.The Maine CDC began monitoring the facility on August 21, and over the course of several weeks, 14 staff members and 24 residents tested positive for the coronavirus. The CDC said that six residents died and three others were hospitalized from the coronavirus.On August 11, four days after attending a wedding attended by 55 people, two attendees began experiencing general coronavirus symptoms, including fever, cough and sore throat. On August 12, they received the results of a positive coronavirus test.The next day, three more people tested positive for the virus, which prompted an investigation by Maine public health officials.Of the 55 guests, 27 tested positive for the coronavirus. In addition, two people working the wedding and a diner who was not a wedding guest, tested positive for the coronavirus.Through contact tracing, officials in Maine discovered an additional 27 cases in the community. While none of the wedding guests died, a person who came in contact with a wedding attendee died from the virus.The CDC said that a corrections employee who worked from August 15-19 and also attended the wedding tested positive for the coronavirus, along with four other employees. By September 1, 18 additional prison staff members and 46 inmates tested positive for the virus. In all, there were 82 cases at the correctional facility, none resulting in any deaths.The wedding reception venue took several precautions including temperature checks and requiring masks, but the CDC said that guests disregarded the mask requirement. The venue also broke the state requirement that wedding receptions be kept to a maximum of 50 guests amid the pandemic.“Community gatherings such as weddings, birthday parties, church events, and funerals have the potential to be SARS-CoV-2 super-spreading events,” the CDC said. “Increased transmission risk at such events might result from failure to maintain physical distancing and inconsistent use of masks. Transmission risk is further increased when events are held indoors.”The Maine wedding has been far from the only wedding tied to a super-spreader event. Earlier this week, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo slammed those holding large gatherings after 34 people became infected after attending an Oct. 17 wedding that had 113 guests. New York also has a restriction of wedding receptions attended by more than 50 people."As we have seen in weddings and similar events across the country during this pandemic, large gatherings can easily be super-spreader events, too often with dire consequences. Hosting one of these events after all New York has been through is obnoxious and irresponsible - not to mention illegal," Cuomo said. "We are eight months into this pandemic and simply will not tolerate businesses that put New Yorkers at risk. Those who continue to ignore the rules will lose their ability to serve alcohol.” 3792

A woman claims she suffered a small cut on her finger from the nail salon she's been going to for more than a decade. Two weeks later, she found herself in the hospital having surgery due to a major infection, and there's a chance she may have to have her finger amputated. The image of Maria Luisa Gerardo's finger is extremely graphic — a wound that goes all the way down to the bone. "I cover my face when they come in here and take (the bandage) off because I don't wanna see it," said Gerardo. "I don't. I'm scared."Gerardo made her regular visit to TJ Nails, a place she's been going to for more than a decade, where they call her "Mama." But two weeks ago she claims she received a small cut on her finger. "A little open wound, here on the side of my finger," said Gerardo.A day later, her finger started swelling. Gerardo went to Urgent Care, where they put her on antibiotics.She went back to the nail salon, and she says they offered her 0."He told me, 'It's nothing. Just clean your hand and buy your medicine, and it will come off," said Gerardo. But it only got worse, and Gerardo had to go into surgery."Pretty excruciating to see," said Gerardo's son Victor. "I don't like to see my mom in pain."Victor was by his mom's side during the surgery and days following. "He cleaned as much as he could, to try and salvage the finger," said Victor. "He told me, he kept cutting and cutting the tissue around her finger until it bled, because that was good skin."Gerardo says a man named Bill was the technician who cut her nails that day. Employees at TJ Nails claim he no longer works at the salon and recently moved out of state.Bill said in a phone interview that he never cut Gerardo's nails and he knew her very well and did nothing wrong. Meantime, Gerardo is looking for answers and waiting to see if she will be able to keep her finger. "This is the only thing I ever liked doing to myself, my nails," said Gerardo. "But now, with this that happened to my hand, I never want to do this in my life."The family reported TJ Nails to the state. They are planning on working with a lawyer to take legal action against the salon.  2212

A week ago, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said on behalf of the Trump administration that talks of direct payments to Americans were dead as part of another round of economic stimulus.But now, it appears, there is some backtracking as Congress and the White House work to come to some agreement over the details of another round of stimulus.According to the Associated Press, Mnuchin has reached out to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi proposing 0 direct payments to Americans as part of the stimulus package. The amount is half of what was given to most Americans during the spring in the wake of mass economic shutdowns tied to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.Last week, both President Donald Trump and President-elect Joe Biden offered their support of a 0 billion stimulus plan hatched between a bipartisan group of moderate senators. Trump said last week he would sign the bill if it passes through Congress. However for Americans hoping to see a second stimulus check, this bill comes short on that aspect.The bill would provide 0 in additional unemployment benefits for up to 18 weeks. The legislation also would replenish funds for the Paycheck Protection Program and for small businesses to help make payroll as a number of companies are being forced to close to help combat the spread of the coronavirus. The current proposal calls for 8 billion to go toward support for small businesses.There would also be 0 billion earmarked for state and local governments, which have seen a drop in tax revenue due to the pandemic. There is in additional billion allocated toward the transportation industry, most notably for airlines, which have seen an over 50% reduction in business since March.While Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said last week that a compromise is within reach, he said Tuesday that he opposes funds for state and local governments. He proposed Tuesday dropping funds for state and local governments in exchange for dropping litigation protection against businesses. Democrats have opposed pandemic-related litigation protection for businesses.“My view and I think it’s the view shared by literally everybody on both sides of the aisle, we can’t leave without doing a COVID bill,” McConnell said earlier in the day. “The country needs it. We have an agreement that we need to do this. You’ve been following the discussions back and forth about how to put the package together, it remains my view that we ought to pass what we can agree on and I think that’s a pretty broad area that includes PPP, vaccine delivery, additional assistance to healthcare providers and a variety of other things that are not controversial.Following Pelosi’s conversation with Mnuchin, she and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer issued a joint statement expressing concern that Trump’s proposal would disrupt the progress made in reaching a compromise.“While it is progress that Leader McConnell has signed off on a 6 billion offer that is based off of the bipartisan framework, the President’s proposal must not be allowed to obstruct the bipartisan Congressional talks that are underway,” the two Democratic leaders said in a statement. “Members of the House and Senate have been engaged in good-faith negotiations and continue to make progress. The bipartisan talks are the best hope for a bipartisan solution.“The President’s proposal starts by cutting the unemployment insurance proposal being discussed by bipartisan Members of the House and Senate from 0 billion to billion. That is unacceptable.”As Trump has pushed for direct payments while Schumer and Pelosi offer their skepticism of Trump's proposal, the idea of direct payments has earned more public support from Congressional Democrats than Republicans.
