NAIROBI, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Somali pirates have hijacked a Taiwan fishing boat off the Horn of Africa nation coast with 26 crew members, a regional maritime official confirmed on Saturday.Andrew Mwangura, East Africa coordinator of Seafarers Assistance Program, said the ship's owner lost contact with the Tai Yuan 227 two days ago north of the Seychelles as it headed for the Maldives. "The fishing boat lost contacts two days ago and has 26 crew members from China, Kenya, Taiwanese and Mozambique. We received the reports on Friday and it seemed the hijack took place two or three days ago," Mwangura told Xinhua by telephone.The International Maritime Bureau has also confirmed the hijack.Pirate attacks off the Somali coast have continued despite the presence of several warships, deployed by navies of the NATO, the European Union, Russia, China, South Korea and India in the region to protect cargo and cruise ships against piracy.Kenya's proximity to Somalia prompted insurance companies to hike up their premiums for ships traveling to Kenyan ports to mitigate the increased insecurity.This led shipping companies to take the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope traveling to the Kenyan ports, with cost of doing business on the Kenyan coast going up by over 40 percent.To date more than 100 suspects have been transferred to Kenya by the Western warships patrolling the Indian Ocean to combat piracy.It is only Kenya and the Seychelles in the region that have agreed to take in suspects for prosecution, but both have recently complained about the burden of trying and jailing pirates in their countries.

SHENZHEN, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Preliminary investigation shows that factors including failed romance, unrestrained gambling could be the reasons behind suicide of a Foxconn Technology Group employee Friday, said police authorities in south China's Shenzhen City.Nan Gang, 21, climbed to the top of a factory building in Foxconn's industrial complex in Longhua Township and fell to his death at 4:37 a.m., said Huang Jianwei, a spokesman of the Bao'an Police Station, of the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau.Nan's suspected suicide was the 10th of the kind ever happening at the Foxconn's Shenzhen plant since the beginning of the year.Police said they learned from investigations that Nan Gang's parents were divorced and Nan was the only child of the family. Nan's ex-girlfriend got married this year in February, and his new girlfriend also deserted him early this month.Nan was said to be ill tempered and fond of gambling, and was thus in deep debts before his death.According to the police, not long ago, Nan had fights with his co-workers, so he employed others to beat the co-workers, but was later blackmailed by the same group of people.Nan allegedly had said he would take revenge and even showed his intent to commit suicide before he fell off the building Friday.Police have already captured the suspects for blackmailing Nan pending further investigation.Shenzhen-based Foxconn's company profile on its website says it's the world's top electronics manufacturer with more than 600,000 employees and ranked 109 among the Fortune 500 companies in 2009. It is linked to Taiwan electronics giant Hon Hai Group.

URUMQI, May 21 (Xinhua) -- China's support package for the far-west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region unveiled Thursday has become a hot topic for residents of the region who hailed the strategic plans that help bring prosperity to their hometown.Chinese President Hu Jintao said during a central work conference held in Beijing from Monday to Wednesday the region should undergo a spurt in development so that by 2015 its per capita gross domestic product reaches the national average.Incomes and access to basic public services should reach the average level of the country's western regions, he said."I have noticed that 'People's livelihood' is mentioned several times in the package. The epicenter was calculated to be 33.1 north and 96.7 east, the China Earthquake Networks Center reported.A series of aftershocks have been reported so far, with the biggest being at 6.3 magnitude.The epicenter is at the Rima Village in the Shanglaxiu Township, a pasturing and sparsely-populated area about 50 km west of Gyegu and about 800 km away from the provincial capital Xining.Many people are still buried in the debris as more than 85 percent of houses in Gyegu, mostly made of mudbrick and wood, had collapsed.
