SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Cajon Valley School District worker crossed into oncoming traffic in his work truck Friday morning, striking a car with a mother and child inside, California Highway Patrol officers said. The crash happened about 10:30 a.m. on Avocado Blvd. north of Challenge Blvd. in the Rancho San Diego area, according to the CHP. Officers say the 55-year-old CVSD employee was driving a Ford pickup with a trailer and made an unsafe left turn movement into oncoming traffic. The truck came into the path of a Ford Fusion and the vehicles crashed head-on. The impact sent both vehicles into the front yard of a home. “Initial indications are that the child safety seat which contained the infant was not properly installed and was found by responding emergency personnel face down on the rear floorboard of the Ford Fusion,” CHP officers said. Both drivers had major injuries but are expected to survive. The infant’s injuries are unknown but did not to be serious, officers said. Drugs and alcohol are not factors in the crash. 1044

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A Clairemont man is recovering after he said he was accidentally shot by his next-door neighbor.Walter Lam said he was at his dining room table inside his home on Sunday when he heard a gunshot.“As soon as I heard that shot, I felt something was really cold on the inside of my arm. And I was bleeding; I knew immediately I was shot and I called 911,” Lam said.Once at the hospital, Lam underwent surgery to remove the bullet.“If it had moved towards my heart, I would have been dead,” Lam told ABC 10News.San Diego police said the bullet was fired by his neighbor who lives right next door. The neighbor said he was cleaning his gun and did not even know it was loaded.Investigators took the neighbor’s gun into evidence, and while he was not arrested, investigators said the neighbor could face a misdemeanor gun-related charge.Lam is recovering and in a little bit of paint, but he said he’s ready to return to work as head of his nonprofit organization Alliance for African Assistance.Lam said this is a reminder that life is too short.“Life can end any time. Just a little more to the right and I would be dead. Right now, people would be planning my funeral,” Lam said.ABC 10News learned the case has been forwarded to the San Diego City Attorney's Office. They will ultimately decide if Lam’s neighbor will be charged with a crime. 1365

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A coffee shop owner in City Heights has planted a handful of coffee trees in his garden. He plans to be at the forefront of the "small-batch coffee" movement growing across San Diego."I'm learning more and more about coffee, and it's just becoming way more intriguing to me, and it's fascinating," says Justin Boone, the owner of Burly and the Bean.Boone says he planted his first tree about 18 months ago, after talking to friends about the idea. He got more interested as he heard of local farms planting the trees in large quantities."I guess it's a little risky," says Boone, "because I really don't know what the outcome is going to be."Boone says his trees won't produce enough beans to harvest for another 2-3 years. But he's excited to taste the first cup from his crop.Meanwhile, coffee is becoming a trendy new crop across the County.Frinj Coffee currently manages around a dozen farms in San Diego that have planted coffee trees. They did their first harvest over the summer.RELATED: Local Coffee Farmers Prep for First Ever HarvestAnd RE Badger and Sons recently planted about 5,000 coffee trees in the farms they manage, saying the climate along the San Diego coast mimics the tropical environment of traditional coffee-producing countries.RELATED: San Diego farmers see coffee as next cash cropThe farming community believes coffee can become a new, trendy crop as people look to buy more local products.Boone believes he's one of the first to plant trees on kind of a small, backyard-based scale. He says this is his way of giving back to the City Heights community. His business has already grown beyond his coffee shop, as he now runs a roasting plant up the street. He says he's trying to make the neighborhood a more inviting place to live."When my wife and I moved here, we were waking on the weekends, and we thought, 'There's nothing to walk to in our neighborhood. There's nothing around. There's no coffee,"' he explains. "I'm really just trying to pull this community together and kind of show light to our neighborhood." 2072

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - This fall could bring dangerous wildfire conditions to San Diego and surrounding areas of the county, according to a report scheduled to be delivered Monday to the City Council's Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee. In his presentation, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Chief Brian Fennessy notes that winter rains promoted more grass growth than usual throughout the city. That grass has since dried out, he said.RELATED: Cal Fire uses new technology to help with upcoming wildfire seasonThe chief also said the long-range weather forecast calls for little to no rainfall."With the dry vegetation, high temperatures, low humidity and high easterly winds, the next three months could be very busy for all fire stations within the city and throughout the entire county," Fennessy wrote. "If the fires occurring in the north and central part of the state (are) any indicator of what is to come for San Diego, we could be in for an extremely active and potentially dangerous three months."Through Sept. 10, Cal Fire has responded to more than 5,100 fires throughout the state this year, which have scorched over 229,000 acres. The five-year average for the same time period is almost 3,900 blazes and 156,000 acres, according to data from Cal Fire, which provides fire protection outside major cities.RELATED: Largest fires in San Diego County historyWhile the conditions for wildfires could be risky, the department is adequately staffed and equipped to respond to blazes that break out, Fennessy said. He said the SDFRD has a dozen brush engines, two water-dropping helicopters and access to the San Diego Gas & Electric heli-tanker.City crews have also been inspecting properties along canyon rims for overgrown brush, he said.RELATED: Teen suspected of starting massive Oregon wildfire, state police say 1862

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 0 million 3rd baseman doesn’t automatically turn the Padres into a World Series contender, but it does buy a lot of Opening Day excitement at Petco Park. The 2019 Major League Baseball season is underway, and for once, Padres fans have reason to hope for something better than a last place finish in the National League West.Manny Machado’s arrival at the start of Spring Training, along with his 9-figure free agent deal (a North American sports record since eclipsed by Bryce Harper and the Phillies) marked a turning point for the San Diego Padres, an end of irrelevancy and the cornerstone of a potentially bright future.RELATED: Stubhub report: Manny Machado signing a home run for Padres ticket and merchandise salesOf course, it takes 9 to play baseball, and Machado cannot carry the entire franchise by himself. Eric Hosmer is back for his second season with the Padres, hoping to put up better offensive numbers than he did last year. Wil Myers also returns, along with catcher Austin Hedges, but much of the excitement at Petco Park is being generated by the team’s rookies.Considered the top prospect in all of baseball by ESPN, 20-year old Fernando Tatis, Jr. is a potential superstar in the making, forcing his way onto the Opening Day roster thanks to his raw talent and baseball instincts. On the mound, the story is a similar one for rookie pitcher Chris Paddack, who was too good in Spring Training to leave out of the starting rotation. Fellow rookie Nick Margevicius also makes the squad, despite never pitching above A ball in the minor leagues. They’ll be joined by second-year lefties Eric Lauer and Joey Lucchesi, as well as converted reliever Matt Strahm, another left-handed who also is coming off a stellar spring in Arizona.RELATED: San Diego Padres grace Sports Illustrated cover for MLB preview issueKirby Yates returns at closer to anchor a bullpen that was considered one of the best in baseball last season, loaded with flamethrowers touching 100 mph on the radar gun. Could the Padres shock the world and make the playoffs? Most baseball experts don’t think so, predicting the team to finish somewhere around .500 for the season. Still, most are pegging the Padres as a team on the rise and one to keep a close eye on in 2019. 2290
