SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Christmas morning, more than 700 families drove through a toy and food distribution at the Jacobs Center on Euclid Avenue in San Diego. Families were given boxes of food from the San Diego Food Bank, plus every child was able to get out of their car to receive at least three wrapped gifts. There were also free gift cards available.“My little one smiled. He was so happy,” said Elsa Sarabia, a mom of five who drove through.Sarabia said she works as a chef, and both she and her husband have lost hours at work this year. This event meant more gifts for her children that she might not have otherwise been able to afford.“We don’t have a lot of money to buy stuff for the kids and we appreciate everything you do for us,” she said, thanking the organizers.This is the fourth time this event was held. It’s hosted by Shane Harris and the People’s Alliance for Justice, with support from Supervisor Kristin Gaspar and the San Diego Lifeguards.The event had to adapt this year to be safe due to coronavirus, but Harris said they knew they had to make those changes to continue to fill this need. The breakfast would usually take place in a big hall, but organizers designed a drive-through format for 2020.“Really just trying to make sure the needs of the community are met particularly at a time where COVID-19 has made it really difficult for a lot of families economically,” said Harris.One volunteer was dancing through the whole morning as she distributed food, saying she was glad to give up her Christmas morning if it meant helping those in her community who needed it this year."A lot of these people do appear to be in great need. The bowling alley off Mira Mesa Boulevard has been known for their special needs and senior leagues, and as a spot for youth bowlers to enjoy the game with family and friends.Those who love the Lanes hope it has not seen its last strike."They have probably the biggest, or the second biggest, youth program in the state. We also have a couple of national champions that bowl there," said Marci Greim, who has started a "Save Mira Mesa Lanes" GoFundMe page.Greim, a mother of two young bowlers, said Mira Mesa Lanes has always been a big advocate of college."The kids, just by participating in leagues, have a portion of their dues set aside for college scholarship money. Then, when the kids do well in tournaments, or other things like that, they are earning college scholarship money. Mira Mesa Lanes has just always welcomed the youth bowlers,” said Greim.Mira Mesa Lanes shut down on March 16 due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. They reopened for a few weeks in June, but state restrictions forced them to shut down once again.The alley has been closed ever since."So, they are really on the brink," said Greim. "They are already behind on their rent and it's looking pretty bleak."The GoFundMe page was organized to help Mira Mesa Lanes pay their rent while the alley sits in limbo amid the pandemic.“It’s to help them survive long enough to not be closed permanently,” said Greim. 1625

Students at Grossmont High School need guitars for class."We'll have 80 students plus taking guitar this year," says teacher Jeremy Cooke. "It is vital for them to be able to play a guitar at home."The high school is not able to provide an instrument for each student."We're a Title I school. So over half of our students get free or reduced lunch, and many can't afford their own guitar."Cooke made a post on Facebook asking for the community to donate any used or new guitars. He says the response has been amazing. As of Monday afternoon, Cooke has received over 30 guitars. Many others are pledging to donate."I've been driving around the county picking up guitars, meeting the people who are donating, and its really neat to see, especially during these tough times."As part of his distance learning plan, Cook has compiled multiple videos recorded over the years to help students learn to play the guitar.Once the class is finished, the students will return the donated guitars to the school for others to use the following year.Grossmont High School is still in need of more guitars. Cooke says he is accepting used and new acoustic or electric guitars for the upcoming school year. Gavin Newsom said Sunday that he is shutting down bars in several counties across the state and recommending closures in others.Newsom made the announcement on Twitter hours after the state reported 5,972 new coronavirus cases on Saturday.San Diego County was not on the list of closures or recommended closures."NEW: Due to the rising spread of #COVID19, CA is ordering bars to close in Fresno, Imperial, Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, San Joaquin, and Tulare, while recommending they close in Contra Costa, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Stanislaus, & Ventura," Newsom tweeted at 12:17 p.m.On Saturday, Los Angeles County health officials reported "significant increases" in COVID-19 cases, including 2,169 newly confirmed cases and 23 additional deaths.
