SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Signs posted at the Cowles Mountain trailhead warned San Diego hikers to leave their dogs at home during hot weather. While only three miles long, the trail in Mission Trails Regional Park is steep and often rocky, with no shade. During the cooler months, the trail is popular for dog owners. County experts say dogs with short snouts, like bulldogs, pugs, and Boston terriers, can have difficulty catching their breath in hot weather. The high heat also puts stress on puppies, older dogs, and overweight pets. RELATED: Check your 10News Pinpoint Weather ForecastDogs get dehydrated faster and are more susceptible to heatstroke than humans. “If the temperature inside your house is cooler than outside, keep your dog indoors,” county experts say. Experts recommend :Exercise in the early morning and return before midday.Consider your dog’s fitness level. Match the trail with his endurance in mind.Take more water than you think you’ll need and a water bowl.Take plenty of breaks, preferably in the shade.Check your dog’s paws regularly to make sure they’re not getting burned.Watch for signs of dehydration or heatstroke. They can include excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, weakness or bright red gums, refusal to walk further, collapse, shaking, shock and seizures. If your dog suffers any of these symptoms, stop, preferably in the shade, and offer water. Try to cool your dog off by pouring water over them and then take your pet to the nearest vet.Never leave your dog in the car during summer-like temperatures. On an 85-degree day, a car can reach 102 degrees in 10 minutes and soar upward to 120 degrees –even with the windows down an inch or two. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego student Emily Benkes says her mother has lived in their Carmel Mountain home for 32 years, never once feeling unsafe in the neighborhood.Tuesday, Benkes came home to a ransacked house. “We had our laptops out, I had some money on my desk, Xbox was gone, my Apple TV,” said Benkes. Benkes believes the person hopped their backyard fence, coming in from a nearby trail. Food was missing from the fridge, including a package of salami which they later found on the trail. The suspect entered the home by throwing a rock through the back window and climbing in. “I felt really violated, I couldn’t even go in my room just because I kept thinking that there was somebody in here going through my stuff,” Benkes.She posted what happened on Nextdoor, and now neighbors are trying to help; one neighbor believes their surveillance video captured someone hopping the fence. “I hope we catch this person and nobody else has this happen to them,” said Benkes. The family estimates several thousand dollars worth of goods were stolen; they have filed a report with the San Diego Police Department. 1122

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Since moving to San Diego three years ago, Angela Alean says her financial situation has been like a rollercoaster.“It has been like ups and downs,” she said.By night, she’s a student learning childhood development. By day, she’s an assistant teacher at a preschool in Pacific Beach.She’d like to become a lead teacher one day, but her education has left her with more than ,000 in student debt.Her financial goal is to pay that debt off as fast as possible. Alean is one of several San Diegans 10News will follow for the next year to monitor their successes and struggles while attempting to accomplish a financial goal.“When I think about me not having debt, I think about the possibility of me studying more, learning more about child development, learning more about how to work in a preschool, about better ways to teach children,” she said.Alean knew she needed a lesson in financial management and budgeting, so she turned to free lessons on YouTube.Now she closely tracks her expenses and spending, she’s on a “rice and beans” food budget, and she picked up a second job as a tutor.“I’m willing to make the sacrifice. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Broadway Pier will host special holiday performances and art installations starting Thanksgiving Week.The North Embarcadero will welcome the seasonal spirit with oversize sculptural words spelling "JOY" that list up at night, snowflake graphics along the pier, and a series of pop-up shows by local groups from Dec. 1 to 15.
