SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Close to 100 people packed the Sherman Heights community center Friday night.Just about all of them were there to tell city officials to back off their plan to set up a homeless storage facility at Commercial and 20th Streets.The city says the plan is not finalized, but they are in negotiations with leasing the building. “We have a playground is about 15 feet from this building,” said Noel Bishop, the principal at Our Lady’s School. “The reality is it’s just an open invitation for people to come back to this community and start living on the streets again… having people in our neighborhood that might be drug users, not mentally stable.”Jonathan Herrera, senior advisor for homelessness for the city of San Diego, says the site is expected to similar to the one on 16th street. It will be a place for the homeless to store their belongings while they visit clinics, classes or go to job interviews.The city is promising to be a good neighbor, stressing the site will have security 24/7.  There will be loitering, drugs or alcohol allowed, and they will have regular waste pick-ups within a block radius.“We are currently looking at other facilities in beach communities, uptown, mid-city and southeastern San Diego to see if we can provide additional services in those areas as well,” Herrera said. He said there were a lot of concerns raised that they are taking into consideration, but the city plans to move forward in the process and bring the plan to the San Diego Housing Commission on March 9th.“The mayor highlighted that the time to develop universal consensus is over and that effort to develop consensus has caused us action, and that’s no longer tolerable,” Herrera added. 1733

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Apple says it will temporarily close all of its California storefronts, as the number of coronavirus cases surge in the state, according to multiple media reports.The company's Golden State locations, including stores in Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Escondido, and two in San Diego, were all listed online as "temporarily closed" on Saturday.Apple says each store will be open for pickup of existing online orders, previously scheduled in-store Genius Support appointments, and previously reserved one-on-one shopping appointments made through Tuesday, Dec. 22.No date was listed online for when the stores would fully reopen.The closures come as California continues to see a surge in COVID-19 cases. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Birch Aquarium welcomed two new residents to its waters this month, a first-ever for the aquarium.Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography bred and hatched two rare Weedy Seadragons for the first time, making the aquarium one of the few in the world to now house the fish.The fragile newborns, native to southern Australia, are under an inch long, but have already started eating tiny shrimp. This is a momentous event for our team and our seahorse and seadragon breeding program,” said Jennifer Nero Moffatt, the aquarium’s senior director of animal care, science and conservation. “Seadragons are charismatic, sensitive, and require detailed husbandry. We have spent over 25 years working with these animals and love that we have made the next steps to conserve this delicate species.”Weedy Seadragons perform an elaborate mating display, spinning snout-to-snout and moving up and down in a water column to transfer eggs from the female onto the male's tail, where they are fertilized and hatched 6 weeks later. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Concerns continue to grow after the Del Mar coastline collapses three times in a matter of weeks.Large parts of the cliffs, between 8th and 11th streets, have come tumbling down to the shore. “Parts of the cliffs are still unstable but it’s difficult to tell when exactly that failure, or additional failures, may occur,” says Adam Young.Young is a Project Scientist with Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He says the timing of the collapses is unusual.“We see this activity in the winter time when we have a lot of rain. you can get a lot of land sliding but to have something in the summer time is quite unusual.”Scripps is continuing to monitor the coastline. In a statement from Del Mar City Councilman Terry Sinnott it says in part:“First, we working with SANDAG on a project called Del Mar Bluff #4 that will be built in early 2019 that will improve the drainage coming off the developed properties to the East. Second, there is a long-term solution which is to move the train tracks off the bluffs."Young also advises beach goers to be aware of their surroundings near the cliffs and to adhere to signs that say do not enter.Following a recent bluff collapse, the Del Mar bluffs have been three dimensionally mapped. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border agents arrested 15 people over Presidents’ Day weekend during a smuggling event in Mission Bay.U.S. Border Patrol agents caught the smuggling incident in action on Saturday at about 2 p.m. at a Ski Beach launch ramp. As agents got closer, they say they noticed a large group of people quickly exiting the boat and heading for three vehicles.Agents stopped the individuals from getting away and questioned all 15 people involved in the incident.Agents say six people in the group were suspected of human smuggling and arrested. Five of them are U.S. citizens, including four men ranging from 20 to 30 years old and one 25-year-old woman, according to border officials.The nine other people arrested were male Mexican nationals ranging from 27 to 41 years old who admitted to being illegally present.U.S. Border Patrol seized the boat and three vehicles at the scene. 899
