LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mayor Eric Garcetti didn't create the city's homeless crisis, but he owns it.The two-term Democrat who not long ago flirted with a presidential run has been besieged by complaints about homeless encampments that have gotten so widespread he's facing a potential recall campaign. The low-key mayor who in 2016 helped convince voters to borrow .2 billion to construct housing for the homeless has found himself forced to explain why the problems have only gotten worse.Figures released earlier this month showed a 16% jump in LA's homeless population over the last year, pegging it at 36,300 — the size of a small city. That's no surprise to anyone who lives or works in downtown Los Angeles, where tents crowd sidewalks within sight of City Hall and the stench of urine is unmistakable. The homeless crisis has become "a state of emergency," said Alexandra Datig, who is leading the recall effort. It's not clear if the recall effort will succeed — the threshold to reach the ballot requires over 300,000 voter signatures. It nonetheless represents at least a symbolic statement about public unrest with the growing homeless problem. 1157

LOS ANGELES (KGTV) -- A San Diego native won an Oscar Sunday night for her work on the documentary short “Period. End of Sentence.”Inside a home in Del Cerro, family members cheered as they watched Melissa Berton take to the stage to accept the Academy Award. Before winning the award, Berton spoke about making the film. "It's been a profound experience from start to finish," said Melissa Berton. The journey for Patrick Henry High graduate and English teacher Melissa Berton began in 2013. They formed a nonprofit called the Pad Project, in hopes of getting a machine to create biodegradable pads to a rural village in India. Through a Kickstarter campaign and bake sales, Berton and her students raised more than ,000 for the machine - and a film. "We never thought it would be an Oscar-nominated film, but the idea was always, if we could just make an educational film to raise awareness about this issue then that would be the jewel of the nonprofit," said Berton, who is the film's Executive Producer. The film has received some Hollywood backing. Actor Jack Black, Berton's classmate at UCLA, was among its earliest donors. Other actors including Sarah Paulson and Kiefer Sutherland has supported the film on social media. 1507

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Captain America” actor Chris Evans is hoping his new website and app can help voters make educated choices in the November U.S. election. His civic engagement site, A Starting Point, features short videos from Republican and Democratic members of Congress and other U.S. politicians sharing perspectives on policy issues. With regular visits to Capitol Hill, Evans built the site over the course of two years alongside a longtime friend. Evans says he hopes the site has a “broader impact” than his past withering tweets about President Donald Trump. He hopes to keep the effort going long after the November election. 646

LONDON (AP) — AstraZeneca and Oxford University have acknowledged a manufacturing error that is raising questions about preliminary results of their COVID-19 vaccine.A statement Wednesday describing the error came days after the company and the university described the shots as “highly effective” and made no mention of why some participants didn’t receive as much vaccine as expected. In a surprise, the group of volunteers that got half a dose in the first of their two shots seemed to be better protected than the volunteers who got full doses. The low-dose group was smaller and younger, however, which could have skewed the results, experts say.In a statement obtained by CNN, Oxford elaborated further, saying that a “difference in the manufacturing process” had led to the error. The university said that it discussed the problem with regulators, agreed to complete the late stage trial with two groups, and the problem has since been corrected. 959

Looking back into history, the response by the ObamaBiden team to the H1N1 Swine Flu was considered a weak and pathetic one. Check out the polling, it’s really bad. The big difference is that they got a free pass from the Corrupt Fake News Media!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 18, 2020 306
