LONDON, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday warned against protectionism in face of lingering global financial crisis.     Speaking at a meeting with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Wen said as international financial crisis is spreading, his visit to London was to send a message of confidence for Britain and China to join hands in overcoming current difficulties. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R) shakes hands with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair during their meeting in London Feb. 1, 2009. Wen is on a three-day official visit to Britain, the last leg of his week-long European tour. He noted that the two sides should further explore the potential for cooperation, and guard against trade protectionism, in particular.     The premier, who arrived in London on Saturday for a three-day official visit, welcomed British businesses to invest in China, while expressing wishes for Britain to increase exports of goods, technology and equipment to China.     On the upcoming G20 summit in April, Wen pledged that China would work together with Britain towards an active achievement.     Blair said the international community highly values China's role and views in dealing with the current financial crisis. Wen's speech at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos has sent a message of confidence in strengthening cooperation and overcoming difficulties.     The former British prime minister noted that Britain supports free trade, and is opposed to protectionism in trade. Businesses in the country also wish to further their ties with China. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R) shakes hands with Britain's Conservative Party leader David Cameron during their meeting in London Feb. 1, 2009. Wen is on a three-day official visit to Britain, the last leg of his week-long European tour.On Sunday, Wen also met with David Cameron, leader of Britain's Conservative Party, the major opposition party.     Wen told Cameron that China attaches great importance to developing relations with the Conservative Party, and is willing to further inter-party exchanges and improve mutual understanding and cooperation.     Cameron said his party and himself adheres to one-China policy and developing relations with China, and would continue to strengthen exchanges and ties.     Wen also briefed China's policy and measures on dealing with financial crisis, adding it's imperative for the two sides to adhere to fair and open trade in resolving issues arising from the international financial system.     According to the premier, Sino-British cooperation is beneficial to both countries.     Cameron noted that China has been a responsible country in coping with the financial crisis, and China's policies of stimulating domestic demands while keeping its market open has been beneficial to Britain and the world alike.     Cameron hoped that the two countries would strengthen bilateral and multilateral ties, and work together in facing the crisis.     During his three-day visit, Wen will meet with people from political, business and financial circles. He will also deliver a speech at the University of Cambridge.     On Saturday, Wen met with Stephen Perry, chairman of 48 Group Club, and the representatives of "Young Icebreakers."     His trip is a return visit for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's China tour early last year, as a regular high-level meeting mechanism set between the two countries.     Britain is the last leg of Wen's week-long European tour, which began Tuesday and has already taken him to Switzerland, Germany, the European Union (EU) headquarters in Brussels and Spain.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- China has been studying a fuel tax reform to replace the current road tolls imposed upon vehicles, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's top economic planner, announced here on Thursday.     The announcement came after media reports said on Wednesday that the government was likely to impose the fuel tax as early as next month.     The NDRC together with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Transport has jointly held discussions on related issues including abolishing road and waterway maintenance fees, lowering refined oil prices and improving the fuel pricing system.     The planner didn't specify when to launch the long-awaited reform.     The introduction of a fuel tax in China was first proposed in 1994 but has been delayed amid concerns that it would impose too great a burden on those who consumed more oil.     The government has instead collected road maintenance fees from automobile users regardless of how much gasoline or diesel oil they use.     Analysts said the on-going oil price drop presented a good opportunity for China to resume its fuel tax reform.     World crude oil prices fell to the current 53.62 U.S. dollars, down more than 60 percent from the peak price of 147 U.S. dollars in mid-July.

BRUSSELS, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Brussels on Thursday evening for an official visit to the European Union (EU) headquarters.     The premier was welcomed at the Brussels international airport by European Commission officials, Belgian Foreign Ministry officials, officials of the Chinese mission to the EU and the Chinese embassy in Belgium, as well as Chinese students studying in Belgium.     In a written statement distributed to the press upon his arrival, Wen said the world is undergoing profound changes with a volatile international situation, more regional conflicts and a spreading financial crisis.     In this context, to enhance dialogue, promote consultations and deepen cooperation is in the interests of both China and the EU, and in line with the trend of the times, which is for peace, stability and development, he said.     Wen said he is looking forward to having frank and in-depth exchange of views with EU leaders on China-EU relations, on how to jointly deal with the global financial crisis, and on other international and regional issues of common concern.     "I hope and believe that this visit, as an important trip of confidence, will enhance the confidence of China and the EU in their future relations and in practical and mutually beneficial cooperation. I also hope and believe that this visit will enhance the confidence of the international community in the all-round strategic partnership between China and the EU," he said.     During his two-day visit in Brussels, Wen is scheduled to hold talks with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. He will also meet EU foreign and security policy chief Javier Solana.     Brussels is the third leg of Wen's European tour after Switzerland, where he attended the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, and Germany. The trip will also take him to Spain and Britain.

BEIJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Friday that universities should pay more attention to the Communist Party of China (CPC) organ development on campus.     Party organs on campus are an important mechanism to unite and organize teachers and students, Xi said at a meeting here on CPC organ development on campus.     It will also help the universities to improve students' virtue and foster talents that fit the need of the country, he added.     Xi appreciated the great progress Chinese universities have made in developing CPC organs on campuses in the past three decades.     The CPC work shall always serve the reform and development of universities and personal development of students, he said. It should aim to maintain stability on campus and adapt to changing realities, he said.     Universities should try to recruit high-quality grassroots Party workers, who love and are good at this work, and create a favorable working and living environment for them, he said.     When it comes to the university administration, Xi said, college heads should not only have outstanding academic performance but also stand out in personal virtue and capability to manage people.
