WASHINGTON, D.C. -- For weeks now, protests have touched every part of America, drawing people out of their homes and into the national debate over police reform and racial inequality.“Hands up – don’t shoot! Hands up – don’t shoot!” could be heard from protesters at a recent gathering in Ville Platte, Louisiana.Yet, while free speech is a part of the First Amendment, it doesn’t extend as far as you might think.One example: your job.“Those protections are nuanced,” said Mark Gaston Pearce, who is with Georgetown Law’s Workers Rights Institute and is a former chairman of the National Labor Relations Board under President Obama. “People are under the false impression that a private sector employment relationship affords you all of the rights that are guaranteed to you by the constitution – but it does not.”In other words, an employer, in a state where employment is “at will,” could potentially fire someone for attending or participating in a protest.“Provided, of course, that it’s non-discriminatory,” Pearce said.There are a few exceptions. Federal and state employees are protected because they work for the government. Unions also have some protections. Also, four states: New York, North Dakota, Colorado and California have specific laws protecting employees’ free speech rights.“But that’s four states in a 50-state country,” Pearce said.There are efforts underway in Congress that could expand free speech protections for employees under the “PRO Act.” It passed the House in February and is now in the Senate.“If labor law is reformed, then that would bring those kinds of protections to the public,” Pearce said.Until then, he added that an employee’s best defense may be found in their employer’s own words.“Oftentimes, a lot of that lies in the employee handbook and the publications they make you sign to prove that you read it – and most employees don’t read it,” Pearce said. “They need to know all of that stuff.”Because even in America, free speech doesn’t necessarily apply everywhere, all the time. 2037

WAUKESHA -- A train struck and killed a pedestrian and their dog Monday morning in Waukesha, Wisconsin.Waukesha Police Captain Dan Baumann told Scripps station WTMJ in Milwaukee that the train hit a pedestrian and a dog around 6:40 a.m. near Barstow and Carroll.The train ended up stopping at Broadway Street in Waukesha for roughly two hours -- which blocked eight streets in the downtown Waukesha area during the morning commute.Police are still at the scene investigating and have not released any other information.  558

In some cases, though, protests that started out peaceful have turned violent.“Injured three people, cuts and bruises,” said Mat Davis, a protester in Indianapolis, who saw a vehicle strike several protesters. “It was bad.”In Michigan, Bailee Majeske experienced a protest get out of hand.“There was a lot of rioting, just cars parked in the street were getting smashed,” she said, “and then there was a brick thrown at my head and my friend was stabbed.”So, what happens if you are injured during civil unrest? Getting medical attention is a first priority but knowing exactly what your health insurance covers is key.“You'd need to know what is in the policy - what is covered and especially what is not covered,” said Ray Farmer, who heads up the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). “If a protest happens to turn violent and include some rioting, I think that would be extremely difficult for an insurance company to prove that those injuries occurred due to an excluded act, even if the policy had such a provision.”Some policies, though, do have exclusions, like if you take part in “illegal acts” or participate in “civil unrest.” How that’s specifically defined would be up to an insurer, but it could range from vandalism and property damage to violating a community’s established curfew, or failing to leave an area if police order you to do so.However, Farmer says there are some things a consumer should be aware of, in the event they are denied coverage for the treatment of injuries sustained during civil unrest. WASHINGTON, D.C. (KGTV) - San Diego Congressman Duncan Hunter showed Wednesday video and photographs at the center of a Navy SEAL war crimes investigation to members of Congress. Chief Eddie Gallagher is accused of murdering an ISIS soldier and shooting Iraqi civilians in 2017. Prosecutors say Gallagher killed the unarmed Islamic State prisoner, and tried to kill an elderly man and a 12-year-old girl. Gallagher was arrested on war crimes charges last fall. “I think Eddie needs his day in court,” Hunter said after a Capitol Hill meeting Tuesday. “This is the smoking gun and there’s no gun whatsoever,” Hunter said. Hunter said he shared video indicated the ISIS soldier was injured in the U.S. government bombing of a building and interrogated by the Iraqi military before being turned over to Navy SEALS. Gallagher performed first aid on the ISIS soldier, one of the representatives said. “I don’t trust the Navy to give him a fair trial. With all the focus on this case, he stands more of a chance of getting a fair trial now than he would have if we had not brought to light what I think are all the injustices against him to this point,” said Hunter.
