SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The high temperatures, dry brush, and low humidity are leading to elevated fire danger in San Diego County this week.Cal Fire San Diego is asking everyone to be prepared for the possibility of a wildfire igniting.“We depend on the public to be careful; we depend on the public to be prepared at a moment’s notice to evacuate,” said Cal Fire Captain, Isaac Sanchez.“The fact that the winds aren’t there, it does not help us sleep at night; we’re still very dry. It’s still October, and we know that even though there aren’t winds now, we can bet money that there will be winds later.”As fire danger remains a threat across the county, families braved the heat taking schoolwork outside at Mast Park in Santee, after being stuck at home for months.“It’s so much easier for the kids to stay motivated on getting their work done,” Jennifer Sailler. “It’s harder to stay inside our home with the AC running than it is to be outside in the warm heat.”The heat is also keeping business going for some.“My job requires me to have a close relationship with snakes and the sun,” said Alex Trejo, So-Cal Rattlesnake Removal. “When it’s hot, what they’re actually doing is trying to find shelter. “Trejo removes rattlesnakes from properties and relocates them to areas where they can have a second chance at life.He said he’s been getting more calls for rattlesnake removals in the East County during the hot weather.“It’s very important to understand the nature of the snake; the snake is not out to hurt people, the snake is a survival expert,” he said. “My priority is making sure families are safe during this heatwave because they will be coming on people’s properties right now.”The heat advisory will remain in effect until 5 PM Friday. 1757

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers are finding a place to stay through the Safe Harbors Network, an organization which got its start at the Christ United Methodist Church in Normal Heights. Pastor Bill Jenkins began giving shelter to Haitian refugees back in 2009. And for quite a while the church was the only immigrant welcoming shelter in southern California. Eventually, the Safe Harbors Network was created. It's a growing collection of churches, organizations, and individuals that house refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers. Pastor Jenkins says he's seen an explosion of interest from people wanting to help in recent months after Trump's zero-tolerance immigration policy went into effect. Safe Harbors works in cooperation with ICE to give shelter to people awaiting their day in court.   886

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- The owner of MetroFlex Gym in Oceanside said he is now in compliance with San Diego County's public health order after refusing to close his doors for months.Lou Uridel fought back against the closure orders of all gyms and fitness centers in California, saying he would lose the business he worked so hard to build if he closed his doors. Uridel also said he provides wellness services that don't fall under the order.Friday, Uridel received a letter from Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, to immediately close.The letter states that MetroFlex Gym was operating indoors in violation of state and county public health orders.Uridel quickly moved some fitness equipment on the sidewalk outside of his gym and is now getting a permit from the City of Oceanside to expand and build a more extensive outdoor gym.He said he would be closed down until later this week while he gets it all squared away, but some services inside will continue."We have nutrition supplement store, food pickup services," he explained.Before Dr. Wooten's letter was sent, Oceanside Police visited Uridel's gym a few times to try to gain voluntary compliance with the public health order.Uridel tells 10News he received positive feedback about his gym's cleanliness, and he went above and beyond to ensure the safety of employees and members."We hired a virologist, and they said the biggest things were capacity, social distancing, and airflow. So that's what we focused on," he said.Uridel said he purchased a high quality disinfecting spray gun for ,000 and bought six industrial-grade fans to circulate the air while leaving front and back doors open at his gym.He said the gym was disinfected every hour, equipment was moved to allow for social distancing, and capacity was limited to 20 percent."I've had 38,100 visits since May 8th, we have ten trainers here, and we've not had one outbreak," he said. "It's just like a nail in our back to be treated like an egregious violator. I've had death threats. I have people calling me a mass murderer, irresponsible and selfish; I don't see myself as selfish for trying to provide employment for ten trainers and staff."Uridel said had he followed the closure orders from the beginning and closed down his gym, he would lose the business he worked so hard to build."You can't keep throwing us on life support and expecting us to stay around," he said. "Businesses aren't light switches; you can't turn us on and off."Uridel was cited back in May for refusing to shut down during the initial orders from the state. He has since hired a lawyer. 2614

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat damaged the USS Midway Sunday.The mast of the sailboat collided with a safety net attachment on the front port-side ‘horn’ of the ship. The crash happened shortly after 2 p.m. according to Harbor Police.The mast of the sailboat snapped off. There was minor damage to the safety nets of the Midway.“I thought something fell off the flight line, I didn't think a boat would crash into the Midway,” said Craig Wiener, who was touring the Midway at the time of the crash. “We were looking out the little port windows, and you see the mast falling off into the water."Harbor patrol says no charges are expected and attributed the crash to inexperience on the part of the person steering the sailboat.  Eight people were onboard the sailboat, and none of them were hurt.“He didn't realize how close he was and how tall his mast was and it was too late and the wind pulled him in,” Wiener said. 945

San Diego, Calif. (KGTV) - California is the biggest prizes in the 2020 primary and the remaining Democratic presidential candidates are making a final push to turn out voters in San Diego. Much of their final efforts is focused on getting supporters in the South Bay."We're putting people out in their own neighborhoods, talking to neighbors they already know, making sure they're filling out their absentee ballots," said Joe Biden campaign staffer Jack Hurley.Biden opened an office in the Eastlake neighborhood of Chula Vista shortly after the Iowa Caucus. While Biden does not have as big a staff or infrastructure as other campaigns, they have seen a boost in volunteers since Biden won the South Carolina primary. "I want to see change and I wanted Joe Biden to be that change, and that means I needed to get to work," said Russell, who walked in to the Biden office Monday to volunteer.Bernie Sanders has a large organization in San Diego, based out of its headquarters in Barrio Logan. Monday, teams worked in shifts to train volunteers to canvass the South Bay, focused particularly on San Ysidro. "Our goal is turning out voters that a lot of them haven't actually voted before. So we're mainly focused on turnout at this point in time," one staffmember told the volunteers."It was tough in the beginning," said Sanders volunteer France Hanna about his first efforts at doorknocking. "But I realize as I share my personal Bernie story with all the doors that I knock on that I have a lot of commonalities with people."The Sanders campaign is particularly working to utilize a relatively new law in California that allows ballot delivery, meaning that campaign volunteers can pick up voters' ballots and deliver them to be counted. Because Sanders emphasizes turnout out non-traditional voters, especially young voters and people of color, ballot delivery could provide a boon, making it easier people who perhaps may not have gone to the polls to cast a ballot.The Mike Bloomberg campaign is also working to reach LatinX voters in the South Bay. "One of the main things we understand about the South Bay is that there is the most potential to turn out voters," said staffer Jesus Cardenas. Bloomberg has teams of volunteers knocking on doors and making calls. "It's going to be a little bit crazy, but it's going to be fun," Cardenas said.
