NORTH OGDEN, Utah — Officials at a Utah healthcare system say caretakers from a nursing facility brought a patient to a COVID-19 testing site on Sunday, but upon arrival found that the patient was dead."When the nursing facility's van reached the drive-thru testing tent, their patient was unresponsive, cold to the touch, and likely deceased," a statement from Intermountain Healthcare read. "The testing-site caregivers immediately called 911 but EMS workers could not revive the individual. Caregivers acted quickly and followed correct procedures. The testing center was fully staffed and there were lower testing volumes."The patient was identified as a 71-year-old man.Erin Goff, a spokesperson for Intermountain Healthcare, said she was unsure how long the man was waiting for his COVID-19 test.Testing lines on Monday were very long, with dozens of cars spilling out onto the street because they did not fit into the clinic's parking lot.Neal Berube, the mayor of North Ogden, is also a member of the Intermountain Healthcare Board of Trustees.He did not want to speak on behalf of the hospital but called his initial reaction to the case "alarming" as he awaits more information."The line is quite long, which I believe is the case at most testing facilities today... the waits could be up to several hours long," Berube said.Deputy Chief Jeremiah Jones of the North View Fire District said the patient was discovered in "cardiac respiratory arrest.""Cardiac respiratory arrest is when you have no heartbeat and you're not breathing on your own," Jones said.It's unclear how the 71-year-old patient died.Cardiac respiratory arrest could be caused by complications from COVID-19 or a variety of other medical reasons, Jones said."We don't diagnose in the field," Jones said. "Our job is to just treat the symptoms that we see and the signs that we see. We don't make any diagnosis."Berube said he believes the patient was seeking a COVID-19 test to prepare for an upcoming surgery."I think until an autopsy is performed, we probably shouldn't jump to conclusions," he said. "It would be very unfortunate to try to place blame on what happened here... the anxiety, the fear that's present in our community, it just gets compounded when we jump to conclusions."When asked if there were enough staff members at the testing site to handle the number of patients, Berube said it's difficult for officials to plan ahead."Safety of patients and the community is number one. I believe that if additional resources are identified, then Intermountain Healthcare, following their values and their mission, that they would make sure resources are there," Berube said. "Any given day, you don't know how many patients are going to show up to get tested. NEW YORK -- The white woman who called 911 on a Black man in Central Park back in May also made a second previously undisclosed phone call accusing the man of trying to assault her, the Manhattan district attorney revealed during a court appearance Wednesday.Amy Cooper was caught on camera calling 911 and falsely accusing Christian Cooper of threatening her life during an argument over leashing her dog in an area of the park where it is required. Amy and Christian Cooper are not related.Amy Cooper appeared in court Wednesday on a charge of falsely reporting an incident. According to the Manhattan district attorney’s office, the charge is related to the a second phone call, which was not heard on camera.During that call to 911, Amy Cooper repeated her initial accusation and added that the man “tried to assault her," District Attorney Cyrus Vance said.When officers arrived, Amy Cooper admitted that the man had not tried to assault her and had not come into contact with her, according Vance.Amy Cooper appeared virtually before a judge Wednesday, but she did not enter a plea. The case was adjourned until Nov. 17.The district attorney’s office is also exploring the option with Amy Cooper’s defense team of having her participate in an educational program to take responsibility for her actions and educate others on preventing future incidents.The now viral video was taken on May 25 by Christian Cooper. Following the incident, Amy Cooper was dubbed "Central Park Karen" — Karen being a term for women seen as acting racist and entitled.Christian Cooper, an avid bird watcher, had repeatedly told Amy Cooper to leash her pet. Instead, she called 911.Since the video went viral, Amy Cooper was fired by her employer and voluntarily surrendered custody of her dog to the rescue organization she adopted it from. The dog was later returned to her.She has also apologized for her actions and claimed she is not racist.The incident led to Gov. NEW YORK — A wealthy benefactor of the disgraced leader of an upstate New York self-improvement group has been sentenced to more than six years in prison in connection with a federal sex slave case.Seagram’s liquor fortune heiress Clare Bronfman appeared in federal court Wednesday in Brooklyn, where a judge handed her an 81-month prison sentence. She was immediately taken into custody to begin her sentence. Bronfman's lawyers wanted her to get only three years of probation, but prosecutors said she deserves five years behind bars for her support of Keith Raniere.Raniere was convicted of charges last year accusing him of turning some of his followers into sex slaves branded with his initials.Raniere is known as the leader of the group NXIVM. Prosecutors say the organization operated like a cult, in which members formed a secret sorority comprised of brainwashed female “slaves” who were forced to have sex with Raniere.Long affiliated with NXIVM, Bronfman reportedly provided millions of dollars to bankroll Raniere and his program of self-improvement classes and paid for lawyers to defend the group against a lawsuit filed by critics.Last year, Bronfman admitted in a guilty plea that she harbored someone who was living in the U.S. illegally for “labor and services.” She also claimed to have committed credit card fraud on behalf of Raniere.Bronfman’s lawyers argued that she deserved leniency because she didn’t have direct involvement with the most disturbing allegations in the case, but prosecutors said she deserved severe punishment because Raniere likely couldn’t have gotten away with what he did without her. 1640

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Orlando Ortega posted a Facebook video of his now-former co-worker, Eileen Marcinkowski, calling him the N-word Sunday. The video has more than 150,000 views.But the owner of the restaurant where the incident took place said the video doesn't tell the whole story. “The lady in the video he actually did hit. She had blood on her face, she was bleeding," said Jane Thursfield, owner of Cactus Jack. Thursfield said Ortega provoked the fight when he punched Marcinkowski in the face after he was let go by the restaurant. Scripps station WFTX in Fort Myers could see no evidence of blood on Marcinkowski's face in the Facebook video. The owner said even if Marcinkowski was provoked, the racial comments were not OK. “No, no, of course not," Thursfield said. "No, we don’t condone that at all.”Other customers, like Johnny Samz, who said he regularly eats at Cactus Jack, agreed. “I don’t think it’s ever good, for anybody to use the N-word," said Samz. "I don’t care what the circumstances are.” WFTX's Jasmine Minor asked since Ortego no longer worked at the restaurant, if Marcinkowski would face the same fate. “She is still working here, yeah," said Thursfield. "I have not been here long and she’s working, but we will obviously address that.” The owner said the incident took place "off-the-clock" and "off business property." NEW YORK (AP) — Twitter has blocked a post from an adviser to President Donald Trump who suggested that masks do not work to stop the spread of coronavirus. Scott Atlas joined the White House in August as a science adviser. He had tweeted “Masks work? NO.” The post said widespread use of masks is not supported. It was blocked Sunday. A Twitter spokesperson says the tweet violated a company policy that prohibits sharing false or misleading misinformation about COVID-19. In such cases, Twitter disables the account until its owner deletes the post in question. Atlas called Twitter's action censorship. 613
