The drug ketamine is used as an anesthetic, a pain reliever or even a club drug. But now, a ketamine-like drug could soon be approved by the FDA to help people fighting severe depression. Sally Owens is one patient undergoing ketamine treatment. “You feel secure in and grounded, even though you're in a dream state,” Owens says of the treatment. “And in an hour, you come out of it and you're feeling better.” The retired nurse started getting IV ketamine treatments after fighting depression with antidepressants for most of her adult life, with no success. But after two sessions at Vitalitas, a Denver ketamine infusion center, she saw results. “I was doing more things around the house and getting out and and doing more things with friends,” she says. Owens says she’s excited to hear the FDA is considering a more accessible, less potent nasal spray similar to ketamine. “You could essentially think of esketamine as half of ketamine,” describes Dr. Roman Langston, who treats patients with ketamine. Esketamine would be for people with severe depression who haven't benefited from at least two different therapies, the doctor says. 300 million people around the world are affected by severe depression. Drug makers hope the spray can help 30 to 40 percent of patients, who don't respond to antidepressants. Antidepressants can take weeks to take effect, while they say nasal spray benefits start after four hours. Dr. Langston says FDA approval could make more people comfortable using the drug, commonly known as a party drug. Right now, it's not covered by insurance. Sessions can range from 0 to 0 for a session. “If they qualify for coverage through their insurance company, maybe it's a copay, and they can give it a try and it could make a huge difference in their life,” he says.Dr. Langston says it remains to be seen what the long-term consequences of esketamine are. 1907

A federal judge will sentence Paul Manafort on Thursday for defrauding banks and the government and failing to pay taxes on millions of dollars in income he earned from Ukrainian political consulting -- charges that stemmed from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. The penalty may be steep enough to keep the longtime lobbyist and former Trump campaign chairman in prison for the rest of his life.Prosecutors say that Manafort, 69, deserves between 19 and 25 years in prison as well as millions of dollars in fines and restitution for the crimes, for which a jury convicted him after a three-week trial last summer. Manafort has shown little remorse, they say, and even lied under oath following a plea deal after the trial."The defendant blames everyone from the special counsel's office to his Ukrainian clients for his own criminal choices," prosecutors wrote in a final court filing this week to Judge T.S. Ellis in Alexandria, Virginia. In many ways, the Manafort case -- which reached back almost a decade to track the movement of money from his Ukrainian political consulting work, through the time he was broke and working for Trump in 2016 -- has shaped Mueller's actions for almost two years.Manafort's was the first indictment Mueller announced in late 2017 and it used the criminal prosecution to ratchet up pressure on him throughout 2018 as they sought his cooperation on matters central to their probe. At one point, after securing Manafort's longtime deputy Rick Gates as a witness against him, prosecutors split his case in two, putting the more clear-cut financial crimes indictment in the fast-moving Northern Virginia federal court. Manafort's conviction at trial was a major win for Mueller -- the only official certification from an impartial group of citizens that Mueller had uncovered major crime. The eight crimes for which Manafort will be sentenced on Thursday include five convictions of tax fraud from 2010 through 2014, hiding his foreign bank accounts from federal authorities in 2012 and defrauding two banks for more than million in loans intended for real estate. At his trial, one juror refused to join the other 11 to convict him on 10 additional foreign banking and bank fraud charges. Prosecutors later dropped those counts.Manafort did not testify in his own defense at his trial, which 2411

A family in Chicago has filed a lawsuit, claiming that the Chicago Police raided the wrong home during a 4-year-old's birthday party.Stephanie Bures, the plaintiff in the lawsuit, claims that officers had the wrong house during the Feb. 10 raid, claiming that the suspect sought by police had not lived there for five years. Bures claimed in the lawsuit that 17 officers raided the home during her son's birthday party. The lawsuit claims that officers pointed guns at the 4-year-old, and Bures' 7-year-old child.Chicago Police was unable to comment to NBC News on pending litigation. Bures' attorney, Al Hofeld Jr., held a news conference on Tuesday regarding the raid. He claimed that officers handcuffed the parents, shouted profanities and insults and smashed the child's birthday cake. "Hysterical, the children were terrified that they and their families were going to be shot," Hofeld said in a press release. "During the ensuring search, officers smashed TJ’s birthday cake, poured peroxide on his presents, trashed the basement unit, screamed profanity and insults at the families, unlawfully questioned the children in a separate room without the consent of their parents, and joked and laughed throughout the raid. No one was arrested or charged."Hofeld claimed that his office found the current address of search warrant’s suspect within 30 seconds. 1373
