BEIJING, July 29 (Xinhua) -- China's work safety authorities will investigate and crack down on manufacturers operating illegally in the coming three months, the Work Safety Committee Office under the State Council, China's Cabinet, said Wednesday.Accidents in manufacturing plants have dropped this year, but illegal operations still pose a grave threat to workplace safety, accounting for about 55 percent of the accidents above "relatively major" level, said a statement from the office.An accident above "relatively major" level referred to a case in which three or more deaths are involved, ten or more are seriously injured or an economic loss above 10 million yuan (1.48 million U.S. dollars) is caused.The crackdown beginning from Aug. 1 will focus sectors including mines, transportation, construction sites, manufacturers of dangerous chemicals, fireworks plants and smelting sector, said the statement.Illegal operations mainly refer to manufacturers that run without permits or run with insufficient or overdue permits and against safety production laws and codes.

BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- China's weather forecast authorities said Tuesday that rains are expected to fall on parts of east China starting Thursday, offering some respite to a wide-ranging heat wave that had wreaked havoc across the country over the past few days.From Beijing in the north to Guangzhou in the south, a number of the elderly and children were hospitalized for heat-related illnesses. Some zoo animals died or struggled to survive by laying on ice.Also, a passenger bus caught fire in downtown Beijing and swarms of locusts blanketed a couple of dry prairies and grasslands in the north.The National Meteorological Center (NMC) raised the heat alert to orange on Tuesday, one step before the highest level, and said at least 16 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities were enduring the extreme heat.In Beijing, the temperature shot up to 40.6 degrees Celsius, breaking the city's early July heat record in more than 50 years. Further, the extreme high temperatures would continue in north, east and west China for the next 24 hours before rains begin to fall, the authorities said."Every day we have about 300 patients, 100 more than the average," Qin Jian, head of the emergency unit of Xuanwu Hospital in Beijing, said. BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- The value of the gross output of China's auto industry surged 49 percent year on year to 2.086 trillion yuan (308 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half of the year, officials at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Monday.At the same time, total export and import volume jumped 84 percent year on year to 50.66 billion U.S. dollars, according to a MIIT statement posted on its Web site.From January to July, China's auto output and sales both exceeded 10 million units. In July, China's auto output stood at 1.29 million units, up 16 percent year on year, while sales stood at 1.24 million units, up 15 percent year on year, MIIT said.Also, the Chinese government decided in June to extend an auto replacement subsidy program by six months until Dec.31 this year.Begun in June of 2009, the subsidy aims to help get highly polluting vehicles off the road while stimulating automobile consumption.Under the program, consumers who trade-in their used small-and medium-sized trucks and some mid-sized passenger vehicles for a new one are eligible to receive a subsidy of 3,000 to 6,000 yuan.By the end of May, the Chinese government had handed out 1.7 billion yuan in subsidies for 127,000 trade-in vehicles.The subsidy program has boosted domestic automobile spending by 15 billion yuan, according to officials at China's Ministry of Commerce.

HANGZHOU, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Three people are dead and two others still buried Friday after a rain-triggered landslide in east China's Zhejiang Province.The landslide hit Taolin Village of Chun'an County at 5:00 a.m. Friday as villagers were being evacuated from their homes. The area had been pounded by rain since Thursday afternoon, said Tong Xiaowei, deputy county head.Debris swamped two residential houses, burying six residents and two others assisting with the evacuation, Tong said.Three of the eight people were injured and were receiving treatment at hospital, Tong said.About 300 fire fighters, policemen, medical personnel and villagers had joined in the rescue work, he said.Provincial meteorological authorities forecast Thursday that heavy rain would persist for another week. Chun'an County was among the worst hit by the rain.Also Friday, rescuers from south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region recovered the bodies of three people from rubble after a rainstorm damaged two homes in Dongma Village of Rongshui Miao Autonomous County around 3 a.m., according to the county's flood control and drought relief headquarters.In the far west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, an exploration worker was suffocated to death Thursday after he was buried by a rain-triggered landslide on a hill in Qira County, said a spokesman with the county government Friday.At around 2:40 p.m. Thursday the landslide of mud-and-stone hit a tent where five exploration workers with the Xinjiang Xindi Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. were taking a rest, said the spokesman.Four workers managed to escape while one was found dead after being dug out half an hour later, he said.The civil affairs bureau in northern Hebei Province said Friday a thunderstorm with sporadic hail hit Zhangjiakou City from Wednesday to Thursday, leaving two dead and three missing.The storm hit six counties in Zhangjiakou, with 56,200 residents suffering losses and hundreds of houses collapsing.
