NEW YORK, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here Monday for a UN climate change summit and other UN meetings. He will also attend a financial summit of the Group of 20 (G20) in Pittsburgh scheduled for Sept. 24-25.     President Hu will attend a UN climate change summit in New York on Tuesday, address the general debate of the 64th Session of the UN General Assembly Wednesday, and participate in a Security Council summit on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament on Thursday, said Chinese Foreign Ministry officials.     In a note to heads of state and government regarding the summit, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said "the objective of the Summit on Climate Change, which I am convening on Sept. 22, is to mobilize the political will and vision needed to reach an ambitious agreed outcome based on science at the UN climate change talks in Copenhagen." Chinese President Hu Jintao (Front, R) is greeted upon his arrival at New York, the United States, on Sept. 21, 2009. Hu Jintao arrived here Monday for a UN climate change summit and other UN meetings. He will also attend a financial summit of the Group of 20 (G20) in Pittsburgh scheduled for Sept. 24-25"I hope that cooperation between and among developed and developing countries can be strengthened, and that the political impetus for a successful deal in Copenhagen will be made manifestly clear to all participants," he said.     Tuesday's summit is convening just 10 weeks before world leaders gather in Copenhagen in December to negotiate and try to seal a treaty on climate change after the first phase of the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012.     "At the meeting, President Hu will call for stronger international efforts on climate change and introduce new measures that China is taking," China's Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei told a press briefing last week.     "The president will fully elaborate on China's stance and proposals on climate change and what China is doing about it," He said. Hu Jintao arrived here Monday for a UN climate change summit and other UN meetings. He will also attend a financial summit of the Group of 20 (G20) in Pittsburgh scheduled for Sept. 24-25The vice minister expressed the hope that "the summit would send a positive signal," emphasizing joint efforts to make the Copenhagen conference a success.     During the general debate of the UN General Assembly Wednesday, Hu is expected to elaborate on China's stand on major global and regional issues.     In his speech, President Hu will outline China's ideas about how to safeguard world peace, boost common development, promote mutual benefit and seek harmonious co-existence, said Chinese Foreign Ministry officials.     On Thursday, President Hu will attend a special session of the UN Security Council on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, which is proposed and chaired by U.S. President Barack Obama     "The session will focus on nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament broadly, and not on any particular countries," U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said on Sept. 2.     Chinese diplomats said that President Hu will elaborate on China's ideas of realizing common security through a win-win approach to mutual benefits.     Hu will put forward China's propositions on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, peaceful use of nuclear power, nuclear security and other issues concerning the international community, they said.     Following the UN meetings, President Hu will fly to Pittsburgh for the G20 summit.     At the summit, Hu and leaders of other G20 members will review the progress made since the Washington and London summits and discuss further actions to assure a sound and sustainable recovery from the global financial and economic crisis.     "The Pittsburgh summit is an important opportunity to continue the hard work that we have done in confronting the global economic crisis, and renewing prosperity for our people," Obama said on Sept. 8.     "Together, we will review the progress we have made, assess what more needs to be done, and discuss what we can do together to lay the groundwork for balanced and sustainable economic growth," he added.     The Pittsburgh summit is the third since the ones in Washington last November and in London in April this year.     The G20 was formally established in 1999 to bring together major industrialized and developing economies to discuss key issues in the global economy.     The G20 consists of China, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, Britain, the United States, and the European Union.     China expects the summit to achieve positive results in macroeconomic policy coordination, reform of international financial organization, development and measures against protectionism, said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He.

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday urged more efforts to push forward the rejuvenation of the country's northeast and other traditional industrial bases.     Great progress has been made in the regions since China launched the rejuvenation move more than five years ago, said attendees at a meeting of the leading group of the State Council, the Cabinet, for revitalizing the northeast and other old industrial bases. The rejuvenation strategy of old industrial bases mainly covers regions including Liaoning, Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces and the northeastern parts of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (L Back) presides over a meeting of the leading group of the State Council (Cabinet) for revitalizing the old industrial bases in northeast China and other regions, in Beijing, capital of China, Aug. 17, 2009. China on Monday called for more efforts to push forward the rejuvenation of the northeast and other traditional industrial bases    The northeast is a major base of grain production, heavy industry and energy resources in China. Many cities in the regions face developing challenge as their energy resources are depleted and heavy industries face the burden of restructuring.     The meeting, chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao, agreed more efforts should be spent in the regions to optimize economic structure, promote the development of modern industries, and speed up infrastructure construction, especially some major energy, transport and water conservation projects.     Great importance should be attached to promoting innovation and technological progress in enterprises and work should be urged to develop modern agriculture as well as grain production, transportation and storage to secure the national grain reserve base.     The meeting also called for efforts to tackle issues emerging from the transformation of resources-oriented cities, eco-environmental conservation, improvement of people's livelihood, regional economic cooperation and state-owned enterprise reform.

HONG KONG, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- China has made great progress in gender equality and empowering women in the past 60 years, well on track to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015, said a senior UN official on Saturday at the Asia Pacific Women Forum held in Hong Kong.     Khalid Malik, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and the UN Development Program resident representative in China, quoted Chairman Mao Zedong's famous remarks "Women holding up half of the sky" to review China's good will and determination in promoting gender equality.     He noted that the People's Republic of China has witnessed important progress since its founding nearly 60 years ago, with gender equality as the country's basic national policy and one of the core elements to pursue a harmonious society.     Six years away from the deadline of MDGs, China is now well on track for further progress to meet the goal in promoting gender equality, said Malik.     "There is almost no gender disparity to Chinese women's access to a living market, and there is much that the Asia-Pacific region can learn from China's lessons," he said.     The eight MDGs, set by world leaders at a UN summit meeting in 2000, also include relieving poverty, popularizing primary education, reducing child mortality and ensuring environmental sustainability.     As the Asia-Pacific region emerges stronger than any other one from the undergoing global financial crisis, he also believed the women in the region have a real prospect in redefining and strengthening their role in economy and society amid "a time of great changes".     "Women are the driving force to overcome poverty and hunger, fight illiteracy, prevent the spread of diseases and promote stability," he said.     More efforts were needed yet, Malik added. He urged both China and the whole region to eliminate even more bias towards empowering women and to bring the gender equality to a whole new level on the foundation of all the progress that has been made so far.

BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao called on diplomats to play a bigger role in serving the country's reform and national interests as China is seeking a stable and rapid development amid global economic downturn.     "China is at a crucial moment in dealing with the financial crisis and maintaining rapid economic development ... diplomacy must better serve the overall situation of reform, development and stability," said Hu while addressing a national meeting attended by diplomatic envoys, which ended Monday in Beijing. Chinese President Hu Jintao (L Front) meets with the participants of a meeting for Chinese diplomats prior to the meeting in Beijing, capital of China, July 17, 2009. The 11th meeting for Chinese diplomats was held in Beijing on July 17-20.The nine members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao, attended the meeting.     "Under the new situation, diplomacy must rely on, serve and promote the development. It should focus on the task of ensuring growth, people's life and stability," He said.     Hu urged Chinese envoys to join the global efforts for promoting economic growth, safeguard national sovereignty and security, firmly follow the one-China policy and maintain stability.     China will stick to the independent foreign policy of peace, pursue the path of peaceful development and develop friendly cooperation with all the countries in line with the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, Hu said.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao also addressed the meeting, saying "the recovery of the global economy will be a slow process with twists and turns, there must be a long-term preparedness to effectively deal with (the global downturn)".     The global financial crisis has plunged the world into deep recession, and it's difficult to say the global downturn has reached the bottom, Wen said.

BEIJING, Sept. 7 -- Automobile sales in China may accelerate 28 percent from a year ago to reach 12 million vehicles this year and overtake the number of autos sold in the United States, according to a regulatory official.    The remark was made by Chen Bin, chief director of the industry coordination department of the National Development and Reform Commission, at a conference in Tianjin on Saturday.     In contrast, General Motors Co and Ford Motor Co forecast sales in US will be about 10.5 million units this year, Bloomberg News said.     Auto sales in China in the first half reached 6.09 million units, a rise of 17.7 percent from a year ago, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.     The government's stimulus measures have boosted the auto industry and demand which is set to stay robust, Chen said. The measures included a 50 percent cut in the purchase tax to 5 percent on vehicles equipped with engines of less than 1.6 liters.
