AURORA, Colo. -- Inside the HealthONE Behavioral Health and Wellness Center in Aurora, Colorado, doctors and other staff members are dealing with a surge of patients.“With the impact of COVID, we have seen an increase in patients,” said HealthONE occupational therapist Emma Kowal.And one staff member, in particular, is bringing a level of care most others cannot.“A.J.’s definitely my favorite co-worker,” said technician Colin Smith.“He knows when we put the vest on – it’s time to go to work,” Kowal said.Three-year-old A.J. is a Labrador and golden retriever mix who came on board at HealthONE just in the nick of time, you could say - one month before COVID-19 shut down much of the country.“A.J. comes in and he’s instantly disarming,” Smith said.“This unbounding sense of love that he can provide to people,” Kowal said.A.J. is working with Kowal, visiting as many as 100 patients a week.“Whether that’s petting him, just touching him, brushing him,” she said. “Earlier someone bent down and kissed him on the head.”HealthONE and other mental health inpatient facilities like it are seeing a critical care need. The CDC’s latest numbers show 40% of U.S. adults reporting some kind of mental health issue – depression, anxiety and substance use among them – because of various challenges and hardships related to the coronavirus.“Dogs are often really familiar and really comforting for people,” Kowal said.Just this week, A.J. is visiting a floor of adolescents who recently attempted suicide.“The kids love him so much,” Smith said. “The way their faces just kind of light up when he comes on the unit. I wish they did that for me.”And Smith says it goes way beyond that.“A.J. is also a dream colleague for staff,” Smith said. “Oh my gosh, so much. He definitely helps when the staff gets stressed out. ATLANTA — The funeral for the late civil rights icon and congressman John Lewis will be held Thursday at Atlanta’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, which the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once led. Lewis’ family announced that the funeral will be private, but the public is invited to pay tribute over the coming days during a series of celebrations of Lewis’ life beginning Saturday in his hometown of Troy, Alabama. Ceremonies will also be held in Selma, Alabama, and his body will lie in state at the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery, the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta and the U.S. Capitol in Washington.Lewis, 80, died Friday after a six-month battle with pancreatic cancer. BALTIMORE — Americans stepped up their home purchases in June by a robust 20.7% after the pandemic had caused sales to crater in the prior three months. But the housing market could struggle to rebound further in the face of the resurgent viral outbreak and a shrinking supply of homes for sale. Sales of existing homes rose last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.72 million, the National Association of Realtors said. Their data showed all four regions of the country saw growth, with the west experiencing a larger increase. The data included single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops. Despite the sharp monthly gain, purchases are still down 11.3% from a year ago, when homes had sold at an annual pace of 5.32 million.Inventory remains an issues, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). A low number of available homes was an issue before the pandemic. Total inventory is down 18.2 percent from a year ago, according to the data. The low supply and increasing demand could cause a spike in the price of homes.“Home prices rose during the lockdown and could rise even further due to heavy buyer competition and a significant shortage of supply," said Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist.The median price for exisiting-home sales in June was 3.5 percent higher than a year ago. Astronaut Nick Hague was ready for a mission that would send him and cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin to the International Space Station to join a crew of three that was already on board the station. But just minutes into last week's flight on board the Soyuz MS-10 craft, the crew needed to abort the mission due to a booster failure. The incident marked the first aborted flight of a Soyuz craft in more than four decades. On Wednesday, Hague described the harrowing moments that followed after the booster's failure. “We were tossed back and forth inside the capsule a little bit and thrusted away from the rocket as soon as the launch abort system had recognized there was a problem with the booster," Hague said. That is when Hague's training and past as a US Air Force pilot kicked in. “My career in the Air Force has done a lot to help me prepare for stressful situations like this, whether it’s through deployments or my time in flight test where we have had to deal with failures in aircraft that you’re in and having to get down on the ground immediately,” he said. “We train endlessly to address those types of situations."After surviving an incident at 30 miles above the ground, Hague plans on making another attempt to visit the International Space Station in 2019.   1338
