The Belt and Road Initiative, proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, refers to the Silk Road Economic Belt that links China with Europe through Central and Western Asia by inland routes, and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road connecting China with Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe by sea routes.
Hong said that by unilaterally initiating the arbitration in 2013, the Philippines had turned its back on the possibility of solving the issue through negotiation, leading to a dramatic deterioration of relations between China and the Philippines.
"We have maintained contact regularly, and carried out consultations on global and regional affairs," he said, pointing out that such cooperation "is itself a stabilizing factor in international affairs."
On the basis of a memorandum of understanding signed by Serbia and China, Serbia is ready to seize the crucial opportunity brought about by the Belt and Road Initiative to align the development strategies of the two countries, deepen their pragmatic cooperation and realize common development and prosperity, said the statement.
