SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The FBI said a bank robber who held up a US Bank in Rolando last week struck again Friday in La Mesa. Surveillance photos show a man entering the Wells Fargo Bank inside the Vons grocery store at 8011 University Ave. in La Mesa just before noon. The man pretended to talk on his phone before demanding money from the teller, agents said. He also threatened “to shoot” if he didn’t receive money, according to the FBI. After approaching the first counter, the man approached several tellers in an effort to get more cash, said investigators. The man spoke to tellers Aug. 15 during the US Bank robbery inside the Vons at 6155 El Cajon Blvd. “Grab a bag. Start with your 100s. Put all the money in the bag and give it to me or I'm gonna [sic] shoot,” the man said, according to agents. A helicopter searched the area near the Wells Fargo Friday afternoon but could not find the man. La Mesa Police said the man is 5’8”, in his mid-20s to early 30s, and has a tattoo of a cross on his forearm. Anyone with information about the robberies was asked to call the FBI. 1088

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The latest surge in coronavirus cases has led Girl Scouts San Diego to cancel all in-person gatherings, meetings, and events for the rest of 2020. The decision comes just three weeks after the resumption of in-person troop meetings had been approved.Christa Sherman, Troop Support Manager for Girl Scouts San Diego, told ABC 10News the decision is the responsible one and is widely supported by troops across the county. "Our Girl Scouts are so resourceful and they really want to do what’s best for their communities, for their schools, for their troops," Sherman said.Both the national and local organizations have been building up their ability to support virtual meetings since the beginning of the pandemic. Troop leaders have access to lesson plans and videos. They can bring necessary materials to drop off at scout's homes before the meetings."We’ve had better attendance at meetings, which is crazy, virtually then sometimes when we were meeting in person," said Elise Hilliard, a troop leader in the South Bay.Even camp-outs are now being done virtually. Kids set up tents in the yard or build forts inside. They set up their mobile device so they can share the experience with their friends. Hilliard said the experiences may be different, but that hasn't changed the Girl Scouts mission. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city of San Diego is making sure its homeless students have the right tools to succeed in school.One San Diego’s “We’ll have your back campaign” is distributing thousands of supplies to the San Diego School District’s less fortunate students.Officials estimate more than 6,000 students are homeless in the district.“A lot of these kids don’t get anything new and that’s why we make it is possible,” said Katherine Stuart-Faulconer, the wife of San Diego Mayor Kevin Falconer.One San Diego will have several more similar events and drives this year. 579

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The census count impacts everyone living in the United States, from determining how much federal money cities and counties receive to how many representatives states get in Congress. Everyone living in the country regardless of age, race, and citizenship status is asked to fill the survey out. But San Diego and Imperial Counties are notoriously difficult to get an accurate count, the second most challenging region in the entire country. For the 2020 census, over 100 community organizations and civic groups in San Diego are working together to reach "hard to count" populations.“Some of the ethnic groups are the ones that are hard to count, such as the African Americans, the Hispanic, Asian Pacific Islanders, as well as immigrant and refugee populations are really hard to count," said Nancy Sasaki, President & CEO of United Way of San Diego County.United Way of San Diego County is leading the Count Me 2020 campaign. Sasaki went on to say veterans, homeless people, and children are often left out too. The county was awarded two major contracts, totaling .22 million, to coordinate Census 2020 outreach for hard to count populations in San Diego and Imperial Counties.The Supreme Court will rule whether the controversial citizenship question will be added to the census, a decision is expected by June. 1349

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The battle over the Crossroads of the West Gun Show continued Tuesday in Del Mar.The Board that oversees the fairgrounds is reviewing the show that has been hosted at the fairgrounds for the last 28 years.A pro-gun, second-amendment political action committee collected more than 3,100 letters in support of continuing the show in Del Mar.The letters were given to the board for review and consideration. Michael Schwartz, Executive Director of the San Diego County Gun Owners is pushing is pushing for the board to renew the shows contract with no restrictions or limitations."It took us less than a week to collect all these signatures, we could have gotten more. Some are written by entire families who come to the show every year. It is a family event with almost a 30 year history with Del Mar," said Schwartz. Protesters also made an appearance at the board meeting dressed in orange and asking the board to cancel the shows current contract.The Del Mar, Solanna Beach and Encinitas city councils have approved resolutions calling for a ban on the gun shows at the fairgrounds.Guns can be purchased at the show, but California law requires extensive background checks and a waiting period.The board will make a decision to cancel or continue the gun show at it's board meeting in September. 1329
