The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced in a report on Tuesday that the number of people infected by mosquitoes, ticks and fleas has tripled from 2004 through 2016. And as the number of infections increase, the CDC says the US is not prepared to reverse the trend. According to CDC figures, 27,388 cases of disease from mosquitoes, ticks and fleas were reported in 2004. In 2016, that number had increased to 96,075. “Zika, West Nile, Lyme, and chikungunya—a growing list of diseases caused by the bite of an infected mosquito, tick, or flea—have confronted the U.S. in recent years, making a lot of people sick. And we don’t know what will threaten Americans next,” said CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, M.D. “Our Nation’s first lines of defense are state and local health departments and vector control organizations, and we must continue to enhance our investment in their ability to fight against these diseases.”The CDC said that the most common mosquito-borne viruses were West Nile, dengue and Zika. Here are others facts the CDC provided:  1111

The Democratic National Committee chairman assured supporters Thursday that a scaled-down convention would go on as scheduled in August in Milwaukee, Wisconsin."From the very beginning of this pandemic, Democrats have put the health and safety of the American people first. Unlike Trump, we followed the science, listened to doctors and public health experts, and worked through plans to protect lives," DNC Chairman Tom Perez said in a series of tweets. "That's how we made the decision to hold a responsible convention that will bring our country together, ensure our delegates can take care of official business without risk to public health, and still shine a spotlight on our host community of Milwaukee."In June, DNC leaders announced plans to transform the convention amid the pandemic, moving it from the Fiserv Forum, a 17,000-seat arena, to Wisconsin Center, a convention center. The DNC also advised state delegates to not travel to Milwaukee.Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden still plans to accept the nomination in Milwaukee. The DNC is slated to begin Aug. 17. 1089

The CIA has determined that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman personally ordered the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, despite the Saudi government's denials that the de facto ruler was involved, according to a Washington Post report.Citing people familiar with the matter, the Post reported Friday that the CIA reached its conclusion by examining several sources of intelligence. According to the Post, US officials have high confidence in the CIA's assessment.A spokesman for the CIA declined to comment to the Post. The Saudi government has denied bin Salman's involvement in Khashoggi's death.Fatimah Baeshen, a spokeswoman for the Saudi Embassy in Washington, told the newspaper that the claims in the CIA's "purported assessment are false.""We have and continue to hear various theories without seeing the primary basis for these speculations," she told the Post.Khashoggi, a former Saudi royal insider who became a critic of the country's government, went missing in October after he visited the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to obtain papers for his upcoming marriage. The Saudi government offered changing explanations for Khashoggi's disappearance.Included in the US intelligence analyzed by the CIA was a phone call the prince's brother Khalid bin Salman made to Khashoggi, encouraging the journalist to make the trip to the consulate to get the documents, according to the Post. Sources told the Post that Khalid made the call at his brother's command.Khalid denied the Post's reporting, saying on Twitter that he had never spoken to Khashoggi by phone."I never talked to him by phone and certainly never suggested he go to Turkey for any reason. I ask the US government to release any information regarding this claim," Khalid said.He said the last contact he'd had with Khashoggi was via text in October 2017.Baeshen told the Post that Khalid, who is the Saudi ambassador to the US, and Khashoggi never discussed "anything related to going to Turkey."The CIA also examined an audio recording from inside the Saudi consulate provided by Turkey and a phone call placed from inside the consulate after Khashoggi was killed, according to the Post.Maher Mutreb, an alleged member of the Saudi hit team and a security official for the crown prince, placed the phone call to a top aide for bin Salman informing the aide that the job had been done, people familiar with the call told the newspaper.According to the Post, the CIA also based its conclusion on its evaluation of bin Salman as a leader who is involved in minor matters. The CIA does not know the location of Khashoggi's remains, according to the Post. The Trump administration on Thursday?imposed penalties on 17 individuals over their alleged roles in the killing of Khashoggi. Khashoggi's assassination has created a crisis for the Trump administration and drawn attention to President Donald Trump's business ties to Saudi Arabia and the relationship between bin Salman and Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner.Earlier Thursday, the Saudi Public Prosecutor's Office said 11 people had been charged for their involvement in the death of Khashoggi, adding that five are facing capital punishment for being directly involved in "ordering and executing the crime."Khashoggi was killed following "a fight and a quarrel" at the Saudi consulate, the prosecutor's office claimed. Prosecutors said Khashoggi was tied up and injected with an overdose of a sedative that killed him. Then, according to prosecutors, his body was dismembered and removed from the consulate by five people. 3617

The European Union has announced it will reopen its borders to travelers from 14 countries, but most Americans have been refused entry for at least another two weeks due to soaring coronavirus infections in the U.S. Travelers from other big countries like Russia, Brazil and India will also miss out. Citizens from the following countries will be allowed into the EU’s 27 members and four other nations in Europe’s visa-free Schengen travel zone: Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay. The EU said China is “subject to confirmation of reciprocity,” meaning it must lift all restrictions on European citizens entering China before it will allow Chinese citizens back in.Tuesday’s decree will not apply to travel to Britain, which left the EU in January. Britain now requires all incoming travellers — bar a few exceptions like truck drivers — to go into a self-imposed 14-day quarantine, although the measure is under review and is likely to ease in the coming weeks. The requirement also applies to U.K. citizens. The list of permitted nations is to be updated every 14 days, with new countries being added or even dropping off depending on if they are keeping the disease under control. The daily number of new confirmed cases in the United States has surged over the past week. The U.S. has the world’s worst coronavirus outbreak, with nearly 2.6 million people confirmed infected and over 126,000 dead, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University that experts say understates the pandemic’s true toll due to limited testing and other reasons. In March, President Donald Trump suspended all people from Europe’s ID check-free travel zone from entering the U.S.The EU imposed restrictions on non-essential travel to its 27 nations, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, which are part of the Schengen open-borders area, in March to halt the spread of the virus. Non-EU citizens who are already living in Europe are not included in the ban.More than 15 million Americans are estimated to travel to Europe annually, and any delay would be a further blow to virus-ravaged economies and tourism sectors on both sides of the Atlantic. Around 10 million Europeans are thought to cross the Atlantic for vacations and business each year.___Follow AP coverage of the pandemic at https://apnews.com/VirusOutbreak and https://apnews.com/UnderstandingtheOutbreak 2475

The drop in gun sales has lead to deep job cuts at Sturm RugerOn Wednesday, the company reported a 21% sales decline for 2017. Thursday it disclosed that it has cut 700 jobs, or more than a quarter of its staff, over the last 13 months. That leaves it with 1,750 workers."When we reduced production in 2017, we had to make some difficult decisions," said CEO Chris Killoy, on a call with analysts Thursday. Many of the jobs were eliminated through attrition. The company also had 320 temporary employees a year ago who have since left the company. In January, the company needed to further reduce staff, prompting it to lay off an additional 60 workers.Gun sales have been sharply lower across the industry since President Donald Trump was elected. Fears that Hillary Clinton would win the presidency and seek tougher gun control laws drove record sales through 2016, and encouraged retailers to stock up on inventory. With the election of Trump and Republicans in control of both houses of Congress, those fears greatly abated.Killoy said that 2017 FBI background checks, which correspond roughly to purchases, fell 11%. Retailers also cut back on purchases to reduce inventory."2017 was a challenging year for the firearm industry," Killoy. But he said as a result of the job cuts, "we're better positioned to compete in 2018."There has been more talk about gun control in the week since the shooting of 17 students and staff at a Florida high school, led by many of the students and families from that school.President Trump and some Republicans, including Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, have voiced new support for some gun control measures. But it's too soon to say whether those efforts will affect gun sales.Killoy did not mention the gun control debate during his conference call, although he did express sympathy for victims of the Florida shooting."Like all Americans, we struggle with the shock and sadness of these terrible events," he said.Sturm Ruger is not the only company to report a drop in sales. Overall the industry has reported a sales decline of more than 0 million in 2017.Gun maker Remington has warned it plans to file for bankruptcy protection soon. Killoy was asked about whether Sturm Ruger would be interested in buying Remington, given that it has a strong balance sheet. Ruger's cash on hand fell by nearly million during the year, but it still has .5 million and no debt. He wouldn't rule out a deal for Remington, but wouldn't comment on it directly."We're watching that closely," he said the coming bankruptcy case. "We wish them well going through that process. With million cash on hand, it may provide some opportunities down the road." 2727
