SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - An East County woman was devastated to find out the money she spent to buy a new cat likely went to con artists.“I just felt like I lost my sense of love for humanity,” Suzi Moon told Team 10. Moon’s Maine Coon cat, Teka, recently passed away. She was 15-years-old and a longtime member of her family.“He was the best cat ever,” Moon said. When he died, she was heartbroken.“I was in an emotional mode,” Moon said. “I wanted to get another one because I just was so used to that cat.”Moon searched online and found a website that advertised pure Maine Coone cats. She emailed the website and got a response. “They emailed me back and this cat that I saw on the website was a gray cat. Beautiful,” she said. She also spoke to someone on the phone, who sounded legitimate. The man asked her questions, such as whether or not she was having the cat indoors and if she was declawing the cat. Moon eventually scraped up 0 and sent the money through Zelle, something she now regrets. The day the supposed seller was supposed to ship the cat to her, he asked for more money for a special crate. “We need to have you cash app, send ,000 more,” Moon said. After back and forth with the seller and refusing to pay more, Moon said they eventually blocked her number. The 0 she paid was gone. The website, puremainecoons.com, is no longer active. Team 10 found the website on petscams.com, a site that bills itself as a pet watchdog website. The Better Business Bureau said pets are the top scam when it comes to online purchases. The average loss is 0. Moon wanted to share her mistake with others in hopes nobody else falls victim to this scam.“I just felt violated. There [are] people out there taking advantage like that. It’s disgusting,” Moon said.Team 10 called the person Moon said she spoke with about the cat. That man hung up before answering any questions. The BBB suggests do not buy a pet without seeing it in person. The organization also recommends conducting an internet search of the photo. If you see the same picture on different websites, it could be fraud. 2112

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The 2019-2020 cruise season is officially underway in San Diego, and the Port of San Diego expects thousands of visitors to the region, having a significant economic impact on the city. The Port has 104 cruise calls scheduled, which is up from last year's numbers. Approximately 338,000 passengers will be on the cruises and Port officials say each home ported call has an average of million in economic impact."That doesn't just mean spending money on food and shopping, but that can be maintenance, repairs and things to the ship," said Adam Deaton, with the Port's cruise business development."It's a great, great uptick for San Diego's economy," said Deaton. "We're not in the summer so it's kind of the down season, so cruise is a great pick me up for the winter and fall months."The season began Tuesday with the arrival of luxury ship Le Soleal, from French Cruise company, Ponant. Also this season, Holland America, Disney Cruise, and Carnival Cruise Lines will be featured. Carnival has not been in San Diego since 2011 and its return was much anticipated. The Carnival Miracle will be at the Port starting in December for 12 trips including Mexican Riviera, Hawaiian Island, Baja Mexico and Panama Canal cruises.Starting October 4, Disney Cruise Line will offer 16 cruises from the Port of San Diego. The first will be the popular Halloween on High Seas Baja Cruise.Click here to plan your cruise, or download this season's cruise ship schedule. 1481

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)—A group of small business owners and employees in San Diego County say the new reopening guidelines released by California Gov. Gavin Newsom Friday won’t help them recover after months of struggling.“We were really hopeful, then once we actually got this new color-coding system, it’s the same as nothing really to a lot of small businesses,” said Angie Weber, co-owner of Cowboy Star Restaurant and Butcher Shop in the East Village. “25 percent for a lot of restaurants is not enough to operate with.”Under the latest guidelines, restaurants can offer dine-in service at 25 percent capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer.“We’ve done the math and think we can have 55 people in our building at any given time,” she said.Weber could not provide outdoor dining and spent a lot of money to prepare her restaurant for safe, dine-in services.“We went above and beyond. We added UV germicidal lighting into our HVAC ducts; we’ve gone to touchless checks and menus, we added glass partitions between our tables,” she said.A group of business owners, general managers, and other employees joined San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond outside of the county administration building Monday to call for looser restrictions.Desmond has been pushing for the reopening of businesses and said they can’t survive with the current capacity limits.“Everybody behind me is suffering because of this. I can’t pay my rent with 25 percent,” said Thomas Hall, General Manager for The Grass Skirt. “When my staff was told they had to leave and I didn’t know when we were going to hire them back, it completely broke my heart.”While some say the capacity limitations make it difficult for businesses to recover after operating at a loss, others say their industries have been entirely left out of any reopening plans.“I own a small event business called McFarlane Promotions. We shut down all our business and events on March 15,” said Laurel McFarlane, a small business owner and the founder of San Diego Event Coalition.“We let go of staff, we took out a second mortgage on our house, borrowed from friends and families if we could. We scrambled to make financially for the last six months, only to find out last Friday that we have been completely disregarded and undermined. The event industry wasn’t even listed.”McFarlane said she’s a mother of four children and the sole provider for her family. She said 90 percent of her business events were canceled, and she’s been unable to work for nearly six months.“It’s time for our leaders to invite us to the table,” she said. While Desmond has been in favor of reopening businesses, others are concerned that this could cause another spike in COVID-19 cases across the county.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said in a Tweet, “My fear is that the breadth & speed of what we are doing could cause a spike in cases that would trigger us moving back to a higher tier and requiring additional closures. I would prefer a more cautious approach that gives us a higher probability of a smooth & steady recovery.”Businesses providing indoor services must have a sign-in sheet will customers will leave their name and phone number. Supervisor Fletcher said if there is an outbreak inside a business or entity, the list will help in notifying customers if they have been exposed to COVID-19. The county’s public health order will be updated to reflect the change. 3411

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)  - San Diego State University unveiled Thursday details about its plan for a stadium in Mission Valley that could serve SDSU and a possible NFL team. The stadium is currently proposed as a home for the Aztecs, with 35,000 seats. The panels would change color throughout the day and be illuminated with LED lighting at night.Other features include more than 82 suites, 50 loge boxes, two end-zone party decks, six exterior balconies, and five different club sections. The site would also offer 90,000 square feet of retail space. The stadium is being designed by global architecture and design firm Populous, which also designed Yankee Stadium, the London Olympics, and the Super Bowl.SoccerCity supporters, who want to bring a Major League Soccer team to Mission Valley, responded with a statement from SoccerCity project manager Nick Stone. 1077

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat damaged the USS Midway Sunday. The mast of the sailboat collided with a safety net attachment on the front port-side ‘horn’ of the ship. The crash happened shortly after 2 p.m. according to Harbor Police. The mast of the sailboat snapped off. There was minor damage to the safety nets of the Midway.“I thought something fell off the flight line, I didn't think a boat would crash into the Midway,” said Craig Wiener, who was touring the Midway at the time of the crash. “We were looking out the little port windows, and you see the mast falling off into the water."Harbor patrol says no charges are expected and attributed the crash to inexperience on the part of the person steering the sailboat.  Eight people were onboard the sailboat, and none of them were hurt.“He didn't realize how close he was and how tall his mast was and it was too late and the wind pulled him in,” Wiener said. 945
