LA JOLLA (CNS) - The city of San Diego will close Children's Pool beach Saturday in preparation of harbor seal pupping season, city officials announced Friday.The city began closing the beach in 2014, spurred by environmental activists concerned that beachgoers were disturbing the young pinnipeds. The city has been tied up in litigation for most of the time since then, dealing with suits from a group called Friends of the Children's Pool and other beach access advocates who claimed the closures violated the state Coastal Act and the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.In June of this year, a state appeals court ruled in favor of the city, allowing the closures to continue.At the time, beach access advocates threatened to take the complaint to the state Supreme Court, but the matter hasn't moved that far yet.The city opened the beach in 1932 as a refuge for inexperienced swimmers due to a seawall that keeps out oncoming ocean waves. Harbor seals began convening on the beach in the 1990s and have since used the relatively calm beach area to birth and raise seal pups. California Coastal Commission officials have also suggested that the water is unsafe due to the seals and their excrement, offering another reason for residents to stay away from the beach for the next several months.The beach will be closed through May 15, 2019 to accommodate the seals and their pups. City park rangers and lifeguards will monitor the beach throughout the rest of winter and the duration of spring to keep both members of the public and local wildlife safe. 1567

Bush reminisced about the 41st president of the United States on Saturday after learning of Bush's passing.Mauri Sheer spent two years with the Bush family during his presidency before he was appointed as a U.S. Marshal in the Kansas City area. Sheer, who worked in the Secret Service for nearly three decades, served six presidents."From Gerald Ford through George W. Bush," Sheer said.But it was his time with George H.W. Bush, who died Friday night at his home in Texas, that he thought about most this weekend."He was constantly moving, and when he would move, he would move fast," Sheer said. "If you were working right ahead of him in the perimeter around him and you were right ahead of him, you'd have to be careful if you slowed down because he'd run you right over."Sheer said that same energy went into his golf game. "They say he played golf almost like you play hockey," Sheer said. "He'd hit the ball and the ball's almost done moving and he's just constantly moving."Sheer said the moment he'd never forget was the day Ronald Reagan was released from the hospital after he'd been shot. Sheer said he and Bush were running a 10-kilometer race that morning. "He didn't run as fast as he thought he was going to and he was pressed for time and he was behind and he was afraid he was going to miss it," Sheer said.As usual, Bush didn't miss a beat.Sheer said that's one thing he'll always remember. He also wanted others to know Bush was a fundamentally good person."The main thing that I think people should know about George H.W. KANSAS CITY, Kansas — A second company associated with Schlitterbahn has been named in a newly unsealed criminal indictment.Henry & Sons Construction is listed as a co-defendant in the murder case of 10 year old Caleb Schwab.The boy died on the Verruckt water slide in 2016.According to the indictment, Henry & Sons was the design and construction company for Verruckt.Reviews posted online by people who identify themselves as former employees raise safety concerns before the Schwab tragedy. On the job website Indeed.com, a person who identifies himself as a former welder for Henry & Sons submitted a February 2015 review for the company.The review claims management would ignore issues or "let them pass" like damaged work equipment.The welder also says managers wouldn't require a safety harness to work six feet off the ground and they "just wanted to get the job done no matter how risky it could be."Other review headlines include "Unsafe Working Environment", "Lack of Management Skills" and "Unorganized."At least one poster, however, gave the company five stars, calling it "an amazing place to work." The latest indictment states company owner Jeff Henry hired a man named John Hunsucker as a consultant for the operation and safety of Verruckt.But Hunsucker told investigators that while he could make suggestions, it was only Henry who made the decisions.The indictment further says Henry never asked Hunsucker to check if the water slide met industry safety standards, which the indictment claims in many ways it did not. 1587

KGTV (SAN DIEGO) - The report investigating whether President Donald Trump or his aides colluded with Russians to interfere with the 2016 election, or obstruct justice, has been handed over to the Department of Justice. So what now?"He didn't call a ball or a strike, he said you know I'm just going to let you guys do this," said former U.S. Attorney Chuck LaBella. LaBella explained Attorney Robert Mueller is leaving it up to the Department of Justice to decide."I actually think it's the right call for him to make because he is not in the Department of Justice, he's a former prosecutor, he knows what the rules are, he knows what the standard is, but this is a Department of Justice policy decision," LaBella said. LaBella worked on a similar investigation, during former President Bill Clinton's administration, regarding campaign finance abuses.When it comes to how much information can be released, LaBella said the public will probably only see 30-40% of the findings. "People calling for the public wholesale release of this need to really check the law, because the law is pretty clear,", he explained, saying grand jury materials, including interviews, are private."It could potentially hurt people who only had tangential involvement in this. They were initially suspected of bad conduct," he said. (AP) — The next Mississippi state flag could have a magnolia instead of the Confederate battle emblem.It’s been nearly two months since legislators acted under pressure to retire the old flag with the rebel symbol that’s widely seen as racist.A flag commission voted Wednesday to recommend a design with the state flower. That design will go on the November ballot.If a majority of voters say yes, it will become the new state flag.
