SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The images of our firefighters putting their lives on the line are striking; any time of the day or night and often just inches from raging flames, working to save us and our property. They sometimes pay a price.San Diego Fire-Rescue Capt. Dan King told reporters, "I just want to give perspective on what it's like to be a firefighter and to have cancer. Unfortunately, that's me. Two years ago today. I was in the middle of chemotherapy and radiation; pretty extensive treatment. For me, the treatment was very long and very painful."His remarks were during a news conference about a fund-raiser to upgrade the equipment at Firehouse 21 in Pacific Beach Tuesday.Imagine the health risks — every day."Firefighters can experience a lifetime of environmental exposures in a compressed period of time. It may happen at just one fire or, in many cases, chronic exposure over the course of a long career," Firefighter Kurtis Bennett, part of The Cancer Awareness and Prevention Program, said. To fight that the Pacific Beach Town Council wants to raise ,000 to augment city funding.San Diego City Council leader for District 2, Lorie Zapf, told the crowd, "I wish we had more revenue, more money so we could take care of all these equipment needs."Firehouse 21 would benefit directly. The hope is that other stations will, too, down the road."Their wish list has a health and safety theme; driven by the fact that 65 percent of firefighters develop some form of cancer," Denise Friedman, co-chair of the fundraising event, said.Capt. Rich Marcello showed 10News a specialized vacuum inside the station. He said it's a huge help to address immediate concerns."This extracts diesel particulates from the apparatus floor, which we're in quite a bit of the time and it hooks up to the exhaust system, extracts particles out and gets it out of our air," Marcello said. One hope is that other neighborhoods will find ways to reduce cancer risks for their firefighters as well. 2059

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sunday is expected to be the busiest travel day of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, but it will still be light in comparison to holiday travel before the pandemic. Four million Southern Californians were expected to travel over Thanksgiving, despite warnings against travel because of the pandemic. The CDC advised people not to travel, asking them to stay home, to avoid further spread of COVID-19. Doctors worry about the effects of this weekend's travel will be seen in a few weeks from now, with a surge of cases. RELATED: Fauci: US may see 'surge upon surge' of virus in weeks aheadThroughout the weekend, the San Diego International Airport remained relatively empty, there were no long lines for pick-up or drop-off of passengers, and the lines for flight check-ins were only a few people long.If you are traveling, health officials recommend following all health guidelines currently in place, like wearing a mask at all times and social distancing. 987

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Metropolitan Transit System has launched an initiative to keep their buses and trolleys clean and their riders and employees safe.MTS officials said their ridership has dropped 75 percent since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Now, with officials are seeing a recent uptick in riders, the agency is implementing new health and safety measures.Nikki Jefferson has relied on the trolley to get to work for the last three years. When the cases of COVID-19 started popping up around San Diego County, she was nervous about getting back on board.“I still use hand sanitizer after my last stop, anytime I touch the button,” Jefferson said.To help control the spread of COVID-19, the MTS is now cleaning their 800 buses and 135 trolley cars twice a day. MTS is even using the deep-cleaning fogging technique to disinfect high-touch areas.Additionally, hand-washing stations are installed at their 54 transit stops and plexiglass barriers protect bus drivers from passengers. When on a bus or trolley, passengers are urged to practice social distancing whenever possible.Officials said all riders on buses or trolleys, and riders at stops or stations, will be required to wear face masks or coverings.MTS CEO Sharon Cooney said, “We’re going to educate all of our customers so that they know you can’t come on board without as mask for some kind of face covering.”It’s a move Jefferson agrees with as she spends most of her time riding the trolley.“It makes me feel safer and less of a chance that I’m going to catch COVID-19, since I have to go to work, but I don’t want to bring it to work with me or have it around me,” said Jefferson.MTS officials said they will educate the public about the face coverings. Some staff will also have face coverings on hand. But they add if someone refuses to wear one, they’ll look into issuing a citation. So far, 33 MTS employees have tested positive for the coronavirus; 22 have recovered and have returned to work. 1984
