During Tuesday’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing, Sen. Lindsey Graham said “good old days of segregation” in a question to nominee Amy Comey Barrett when discussing a landmark 1954 high court ruling.On Wednesday, Graham claimed the comment was made in sarcasm."If anybody was listening to who I am and what I said, you know that it was the deep sarcasm that I suggested that some legislative body would want to yearn for the good old days of segregation,” Graham said on Wednesday. “The point that I'm trying to make is there is nobody in America in the legislative arena, wanting to take us back to that dark period in American history.”During Tuesday’s questioning, Graham asked, "And one of the reasons you can say with confidence that you think Brown versus Board of Education is super precedent is that you’re not aware of any effort to go back to the good old days of segregation by a legislative body, is that correct?"Graham is an unexpectedly tight race against Democrat Jamie Harrison for his seat in South Carolina. Harrison fired back at the senator.“Lindsay Graham just called segregation ‘the good old days,’” Harrison tweeted. “The good old days for who, Senator? It’s 2020, not 1920. Discussing your salary with co-workers is seen as a taboo subject, but now some people are saying you should be talking openly about how much you make. "I think salaries in the work place have been taboo to talk about for years, and I think that's created a number of problems," says Marcus Ollig, president of the recruiting firm The Advocates. Ollig has been managing employees for years and believes transparency is important. However, he says, sharing your salary with co-workers is not the way to go about it. "You may hear that you are actually paid more than the person you're talking to, and now they ask you the question back, and now, you might not want to share because you don't want to make them feel bad," explains Ollig. Many people we spoke with say they want open dialogue and feel it's healthy in the workplace. However, Ollig says the real question you should find out is are you being paid what you're worth?Instead of going to your co-worker, Ollig recommends going to your boss. They are the only person who can tell you your worth in the company, Ollig says.But before you do, first do some research. Go to online sites like Glassdoor, Pay Scale and The Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those sites will show you the average pay range of someone in your position. "Speak to a really legitimate recruiter or temporary staffing agency, depending on what you do, because they have data on every job that they service," suggests Ollig. Once you're equipped with the knowledge, then it's time to speak to your boss."If your employer says, 'You are doing great, but there is no way I can get you from x to y,' then maybe talk about different positions, if you like the company" Ollig says. Dr. Anthony Fauci has a stark warning for Americans, reiterating that if our response to the coronavirus does not change, there could be more hospitalizations and deaths.“If things do not change, if they continue on the course we’re on, there’s gonna be a whole lot of pain in this country with regard to additional cases and hospitalizations, and deaths,” Fauci said in an interview Wednesday evening on “The News with Shepard Smith.”Dr. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has repeatedly told lawmakers and other news outlets the country’s coronavirus case numbers are going in the “wrong direction.”Cases are rising in almost every state and territory, and coronavirus-positive patients are overwhelming hospitals in some parts of the country.The Midwest is especially hard hit right now, with Wisconsin reporting a 7-day positivity rate of 28 percent. Most municipalities try to keep that number below 5 percent to allow lockdown restrictions to loosen up.Smith asked Fauci if there should be a national mask mandate.“We do. If we don’t get one (national mask mandate) I would hope the governors and the mayors do it locally, if it’s not done nationally,” Fauci responded.Many states across the country have had to tighten stay-at-home restrictions in the last few weeks, putting stricter limits on gathering sizes, indoor business capacities and mask wearing both inside and outside.As of Thursday morning, there are more than 8.8 million confirmed cases of coronavirus since the pandemic started in the U.S., and more than 227,000 deaths.Wednesday alone, nearly 79,000 new people reported testing positive for the coronavirus in this country, and nearly 1,000 people died.“There is very little appetite for a lockdown in this country,” Fauci told Shepard Smith. “There’s going to be major pushback both from above and at the local level, however, what Melbourne did, what Australia did as a country, was very successful.”Melbourne only reopened Wednesday, after residents spent three months under strict lockdown orders.While he doesn’t feel America would be able to commit to something like that, Dr. Fauci suggests being better about mask wearing, social distancing and avoiding crowds.Dr. Fauci’s warning that more pain could come echos warnings from a recent projection that more than half a million Americans could die of the coronavirus by March if there are no changes to our efforts to control the spread of the coronavirus.“We find that achieving universal mask use (95% mask use in public) could be sufficient to ameliorate the worst effects of epidemic resurgences in many states,” the study stated.Researchers found even if 85 percent of universal mask wearing is achieved, an additional 95,000 lives could be saved.According to the study, the national average for self-reported mask wearing is at just 49 percent as of late-September. 2903

EL CAJON, Calif. - The grieving mother of an accused thief filed a lawsuit Thursday against the homeowner who shot and killed her son.The civil suit identifies the homeowner as Michael Poe, and it stems from an incident in the early morning hours of March 11. Police say the homeowner woke up to the sound of glass breaking. He went outside and found someone breaking into his work truck. His mother Monika Anderson said her son had a drug problem but was doing his best to stay sober.“He was on Suboxone, a drug to stay sober, and someone had stolen his Suboxone,” Anderson said. “Although it's really hard for me to imagine my son at  31 years of age would just start stealing, but I think he was just desperate for drugs and in a lot of pain. I don’t think he deserved to die over that.”Police are investigating the incident and no criminal charges have been filed. Anderson’s attorney, Dan Gilleon, said that investigation should not affect their civil lawsuit.“The bottom line is Joe shouldn't have died and at a minimum it's because this guy didn’t act reasonably,” Gilleon said. “This is not the Wild West. If you decide to play that gunslinger role, then you’re going to end up losing everything you own.”The lawsuit does not specify an amount.“It’s like a mother’s worst nightmare,” Anderson said in tears. “I told Joe, time and time again how much he meant to me.”Scripps station KGTV in San Diego has tried to make contact with Poe several times since the shooting happened, but have not heard back.   1759

Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit confirmed on his Facebook page on Monday that he was rescued as Hurricane Maria hit his small island nation.  Hurricane Maria made landfall just before 10 p.m. ET on the island of Dominica with top winds of 160 MPH. Skerrit's roof was one of many that were ripped off as Maria came on shore. "My roof is gone. I am at the complete mercy of the hurricane. House is flooding," Skerrit said just before being rescued. Hurricane Maria is the second Category 5 hurricane to strike the Caribbean in the last two weeks. Hurricane Maria is following a similar path as Hurricane Irma, which devastated parts of the Caribbean before coming on shore in Florida on Sept. 10.Local radio reports said that parts of Dominica are flooded, and there has been roof failure at a local hospital. Dominica has a total population of 73,000 residents.  934
