PHOENIX - Latest polling numbers released from the Secretary of State’s office shows Kyrsten Sinema has taken a slight lead over Martha McSally in the race for Arizona Senate.As of 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sinema has 916,380 votes statewide, while McSally has 914,369.345,000 votes remain uncounted in Maricopa County while a small number of ballots remain uncounted as well in smaller counties.Officials estimate about 195,000 of those are early ballots, provisional, and out-of-precinct ballots that voters cast or dropped off on Election Day.It is one of the most-watched races across the country: will Martha McSally, a Republican, or Kyrsten Sinema, a Democrat, serve as Arizona's first congresswoman?Both are vying to fill Sen. People across the U.S. are honoring loved ones who have passed from COVID-19 as part of a National Week of Mourning.Kristin Urquiza’s father, Mark, passed away from COVID-19 on June 30 in Arizona. She said in his obituary that "his death is due to the carelessness of the politicians who continue to jeopardize the health of brown bodies."Urquiza says her dad was one of her best friends and very generous guy. She’s speaking our with hopes of saving other people of color from the disease.“Seeing those disparities play out in my hometown, in my home neighborhood, and then having my dad go through this awful fight for his life and not be able to make it, I knew that I needed to speak my truth,” said Urquiza.Fiana Tulip's mother, Isabelle, was a respiratory therapist for 30 years. She was a year from retirement. Tulip says her mom continued to go into work even though she didn't have enough personal protective equipment and knew she was putting her life at risk. She passed away from COVID-19 on July 4 in Texas.Tulip says her mom was a “giant in her kindness,” as well as loving, giving, strong and resilient.“My mom was so brave, and I want her to be remembered as somebody who was thoughtful and who was generous and who was a hero, somebody who gave her life to save others,” said Tulip.She says in her mom's obituary "her undeserving death is due to the carelessness of politicians who undervalue health care workers."Mark and Isabelle are just two of the more than 210,000 lives lost to COVID-19 in the U.S.Tulip says if the country keeps ignoring the fact that people are dying, we’re going to have pretty traumatic effects later on.“So, it's important to feel and to share the warmth and to spread the love right now,” she said.“We are putting a stake in the ground to say we need to recognize, and recognition begins with collective mourning. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A night of peaceful protests in Philadelphia gave way to more unrest and some demonstrators clashed with police after a Black man was killed by officers in a shooting caught on video.Police say Walter Wallace Jr. was wielding a knife and ignored orders to drop the weapon before officers fired shots at him Monday afternoon.The lawyer for the Wallace family says they had called for an ambulance to get their son help with a mental health crisis, not for police intervention.“I find it extremely, extremely emotionally taxing to think about calling for assistance and wind up with the people who you called killing you. I can’t even conceive the concept,” said the family’s attorney, Shaka Johnson.Tuesday night, about 500 people upset by the 27-year-old’s death marched to a police station, where they were met by officers with riot shields. Police say some of the demonstrators threw debris at officers, and two were injured.There were sporadic reports of arrests in other areas and video showed people streaming into stores and stealing goods as they left on the opposite side of the city from where Wallace was shot.Following the night of unrest, a White House statement asserted that it was another consequence of what the administration called “Liberal Democrats’ war against the police.”The shooting victim’s father, Walter Wallace Sr., told CNN on Tuesday that he wants any looting or violence in his son's name to stop in the city.“It’s not going to solve anything,” he told Chris Cuomo. “It’s just going to make things worse and my son wouldn’t want that. PHOENIX — Besides being our best friends, there are plenty of important jobs our dogs can be good at, like assisting people with disabilities, arson investigations and police work.  But is there a way to find out what is on a dog's resume before they go through all of that expensive training?  Researchers at the University of Arizona believe they may have found a solution. It is called the Canine Aptitude Test and it is in the early stages of development. The test is for adult dogs and looks to see if a dog's cognitive behavior will dictate where they would have more success as a working dog. "With assistance dogs that help people with disabilities, only about 50 percent of the dogs who begin training ultimately make it through," said Arizona Canine Cognition Center Director Evan MacLean. That means that major amounts of money are going to the dogs with no return on investment.For those who rely on these pets to live their lives, they are forced to wait sometimes up to two years or more."If that were any other kind of medical procedure it would be, we would think about this as a horrible thing," MacLean explained. "I need this operation and there's a two-year waiting list to get it. So, we would do something about that. So we want to do something about that with the dogs, too." Shelby Smith spoke to the University of Arizona on the impact an assistance dog has had on her life with a disability."Picasso to me is more than independence ... he's my best friend," Smith said. "He's someone I lean on ... depend on to get through daily challenges that comes with having a disability." MacLean said that stories like Smith's pushed him to really ramp up his research."For a long time, we've been interested in whether you can predict which dogs will become good working dogs based on aspects of their psychology or their cognition," MacLean said. Their next step is to determine if they can see these skills in puppies as well as testing a dog's genetic makeup. 2097

PINELLAS CO., FLA. — A Pinellas County couple is praising a Good Samaritan who returned 0,000 in jewelry after finding their luggage in the road."He's our Christmas Angel," Dr. Joe Fitzgerald said. "He not only found it. He also called 911 and made sure we got our jewelry back."Joe and his wife Elif Fitzgerald attended an annual Denim and Diamonds charity event for Hands Across the Bay Saturday night. That's why Elif Fitzgerald had expensive pieces of jewelry with her.The Fitzgeralds were one of the sponsors for the event, and they had a lot to pack up at the end of the night. Joe Fitzgerald says he put most of the luggage in the back of his trunk, including his wife's luggage, with the jewelry in it."On my way home the back hatch opened and the bag fell out near West Bay Dr. and Indian Rocks Rd." he said.The Fitzgeralds had no idea the bag was gone, "until I looked at my phone."Elif Fitzgerald said she had dozens of missed calls and text messages telling her someone found their bag and the jewelry in it."I was completely shocked that they returned it," she said. "I have valuable jewelry.
