SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County has been told by state officials it will be placed on California's watch list for coronavirus cases on Friday, after the region reported another record number of cases.San Diego County's COVID-19 cases increased from 103.8 to 112.8 cases per 100,000 residents on Thursday, passing the state's threshold of 100 cases per 100,000 residents. The region's inclusion on the list was fueled by 584 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, a 7% positive rate out of 8,510 reported tests, according to county data. 544

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Republican Assemblyman Randy Voepel is being called a valor thief, but his accusers have not produced hard evidence to back up their claims. Navy veteran and Republican state assembly candidate Larry Wilske addressed the media on Monday in front of downtown's USS Midway. He and others say the former mayor of Santee, Voepel, misrepresented his military service record. "This is serious business. It's a slap in the face to veterans," says Wilske. Wilske was joined by private investigator and retired Master Chief Petty Officer Terence Hoey, who has been looking into Voepel's military records.  "He's not a purple heart recipient, although he's repeatedly stated that he is and his chief of staff has doubled down on his claim," says Hoey. They're also alleging that Voepel falsely claimed he had combat experience in Vietnam. However, military discharge documents sent to us by Voepel's staff show that he served on the USS Buchanan and was awarded a ribbon for combat action, and was awarded other honors related to his service in Vietnam. The Wilske supporters believe the discharge documents have been forged. “This document has been altered, thus rendering the form essentially void,” says Hoey. Voepel’s staff denies that Voepel ever claimed to have been awarded a purple heart and 10News couldn’t find proof of the claim, anywhere. Additionally, a military service record provided by Hoey does not include a purple heart award in his list of decorations. Wilske and his supporters say there are multiple credible witness testimonies and video evidence that’ll reveal the whole truth, but they have yet to be fully produced. Wilske and Hoey deny that their allegations of stolen valor are tied to political mudslinging. “The one thing we can't square here is that round peg with Voepel and his wild and comedic claims,” adds Hoey. There was one alleged witness at Monday’s press conference. He said he’s a veteran who met Voepel at a recent political event and claims Voepel lied to his face about his service history. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Residents in San Ysidro and Tijuana are fearful of what will come next after hundreds of migrants rushed the border Sunday in a show of force.Commuters told 10News they fear that they won’t be able to get across a bridge in San Ysidro to work or cross over to see family.In Mexico, residents say they’re fed up with the flood of migrants. “Deport them back to where they are, let them over here. They need to get out of Tijuana because it's just crazy for us,” said Candace Sanchez, a Tijuana resident.On the US side, those with family south of the border are concerned with what the future holds. “It worries me that the border might get closed. I mean it's like uh what's going on? We've never really seen this before,” said Victor Juarez.Employees who depend on their jobs in the US are also frightened. “Kinda scary because you know, I mean, every day we just know that we have to do what we have to do every day just to survive,” said Dana Aviles.Many people missed a day of work due to Sunday’s border closure, taking a toll with the holiday gift-giving season approaching. “I just hope they get out of here in Tijuana and let our lives be normal again, you know,” added Sanchez. 1213

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police are searching for an at-risk missing man who disappeared from downtown Saturday morning. According to police, 57-year-old William Groves was last seen at the corner of 7th Avenue and A street around 10:25 a.m. Saturday. Groves suffers from seizures and has short-term memory loss due to a traumatic brain injury. Police say Groves is also a dependent adult with no money or medication and is visiting San Diego from Hawaii with his mother. According to police, Groves is known to be friendly and talkative. He is described as five feet, five inches tall with brown eyes, gray and black hair and light skin. Groves was last seen wearing a yellow t-shirt with checkered shorts and a black eye patch. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County Officials gathered to brief the community about a potential pandemic of the Coronavirus locally. Currently, there are no community-spread cases of the virus in the County. However, officials are asking the community to prepare for the event. They are also urging citizens not to panic.Empty shelves line many big-box stores, as San Diegans fear a potential widespread Coronavirus pandemic, which would trap them in their homes for weeks at a time.
