A new school year means tons of students are embarking on their first solo living experiences in college dorms around the country. But with that new responsibility comes great power — usually about 1100 watts of it.The Ball State University Police Department posted a hilarious reminder on their Facebook page telling students that the microwaves in their dorms do more than just warm snacks and reheat day-old coffee. They can also set off the fire alarms in the dorms."Every year starts with multiple fire alarms in Ball State Housing," Ball State Unviersity police posted on social media. "Most if not all of these fire alarms are preventable."They offered tips on how to heat up many college student staples, including Pop-Tarts, brownies, Kraft macaroni and cheese, oatmeal and popcorn.Pop-Tarts "must be removed from their aluminum foil prior to placing in the microwave," they wrote. "Microwave for 3 SECONDS not 3 minutes."They also gently reminded their Muncie, Indiana, students that brownies, mac and cheese and oatmeal usually need some kind of liquid added to them, whether it's milk or water. And, of course, they cited popcorn as the worst offender of setting off fire alarms unnecessarily. Students should "stay with your food," they said. "When you no longer hear the popping sound, stop the microwave. Overcooking causes scorching which causes fire alarms."Heed this warning, college kids. There's nothing more inconvenient than scorched food and an entire dorm of sleepy students glaring at you and your smoking popcorn. 1551

Allegations of cheating have been a constant part of the Little League World Series, and this year's tournament is no different. The Barrington Little League team from Rhode Island will represent the New England region in this year's Little League World Series, but one manager said they cheated in order to gain entry to the tournament. Goffstown Little League manager Pat Dutton accused the Barrington team of stealing signs in both games the two squads played each other in the New England regional, including in last Saturday's regional final that Barrington won 6-4. “You can see (runners on second base) leaning in, looking in and they’re doing hand gestures to their kid (at the plate) indicating what kind of pitch it is and where it’s located,” Dutton told the 782
A Michigan high school marching band had no football team to play for, but not too far away, a football team needed a band. Luckily, they found each other and completed the perfect pair. The match was made last Friday night when the Glen Lake Lakers football team heard that their neighboring Forest Area Marching Band had no one to play for after their football team's season was canceled -- Forest Area suspended its season due to low player participation. So, the Lakers invited the band to come play at theirs."No Friday night football game under those lights is complete without your sideline cheer team and a marching band," Mark Mattson, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Glen Lake, told CNN.Thrilled at the opportunity to perform for a crowd, the band quickly learned the Lakers' fight song. Meanwhile, an hour away, Glen Lake was adding extra seating and erecting tents to ward off the impending rain."They were just over the moon excited to go be able to play at a different location," Forest Area Principal Kelly Holeman told CNN. "It was something new and fun."The night ended in a victory for Glen Lake, played out against the backdrop of the music they've been lacking all season long. The Glen Lake athletic director said that the band undoubtedly made an impact on the atmosphere of the night."It didn't take long for the two schools to connect and become one in supporting each others' cause," Mattson said. He added they were welcome back anytime. 1485
