San Diego (KGTV) Over 3,000 volunteers worked Pride Weekend to make sure all the events ran smoothly. But one volunteer says a brutal attack in 2016 almost kept him from being out there. He was stabbed and beaten for wearing Pride T-shirt. “I came back because I found my pride again,” says volunteer Chris Keiser. He was one of the many volunteers up early Saturday morning making sure everyone was in place for the large parade. “I make sure everyone has their radios so they can communicate and check out their cart. We kind of rally the people together, get them excited.”But this was the first time in two years Keiser found himself volunteering after struggling to find his excitement again for the pride community. “I was going to volunteer every year after that and I just couldn’t I just couldn’t bring myself to.”In 2016, Keiser was jogging in his Oak Park neighborhood wearing a Pride T-shirt when he was beaten and stabbed on College Drive. His memory is still fuzzy about what happened. “I do remember a car, the derogatory names, then hearing a car again, and then next thing I know I was on the phone calling whoever for help.”Keiser says it was the pride community that helped him through that dark time. This year San Diego Pride is celebrating 50 years since the Stonewall Riots in New York. Keiser says he’s finding his strength in knowing others paved the way for San Diego to have such a celebration. “You made me try to silence myself and take away my pride, but all you did was make me come back stronger, and I’m louder than before.”San Diego Police investigated Keiser’s attack as a hate crime. He was not able to get a good description of the suspects who are still on the run. 1712

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- San Diego Pride festivities kicked off in the Hillcrest neighborhood Friday afternoon at the iconic Gay Pride Flag on University Ave. and Normal St. Thousands celebrated this year's theme, Stonewall 50: A Legacy of Liberation. The Glitz and Glam and the fabulous outfits at Pride are a product of dark times. "In 1969, being gay was considered a mental illness," San Diego Pride Executive Director Fernando Lopez said. "And the LGBT community was persecuted and prosecuted through legal and social systemic oppression and discrimination."In the summer of 1969, New York Police raided the Stonewall Inn, a place known as a safe spot for the LGBT community. Veronica Zerrer remembers watching the violence on the news. "When Stonewall happened, I was 12 years old, and I was just hitting puberty," Zerrer said. It was a turning point in her life because back then, she says she was hiding. "My name was Ronald," Zerrer said. "In fact, I have a really interesting story. I grew up being called Ronnie."Ronnie served in the U.S. Army for two decades and retired as a Major. The next year in 1999, Ronnie became Veronica. "Before I came out, I tried to be the person that I thought my family and society thought I should be, instead of what was inside my heart," Zerrer said.Fifty years later, San Diego Pride is honoring the rioters at Stonewall, who stood up against police prejudice. "This year, we are 'Stonewall 50: A legacy of liberation.' And the celebrations today, tomorrow and all weekend long are really going to reflect back in honor of our Stonewall generation. We'll talk about the legacy that we are all a part of, and what we need to do to recommit ourselves for the next generation," Lopez said. It is a big 'thank you' to their courage that inspired future generations. "Because you're not allowed by society to be who you really are, you have to almost 'perform' gender. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pacific Gas & Electric, which is blamed for some of California's deadliest recent fires, knew for years that dozens of its aging power lines posed a wildfire threat but avoided replacing or repairing them, it was reported Wednesday.The Wall Street Journal, using company documents obtained under the federal Freedom of Information Act, reported that the utility told the U.S. Forest Service in 2017 and 2018 that 49 aging steel towers on one transmission line needed replacement and another 57 needed replacement of their hardware and aluminum lines.The Journal previously reported that PG&E delayed safety work on the line, known as the Caribou-Palermo line, for five years.State investigators said an equipment failure on that line sparked a November wildfire that essentially wiped out the Northern California town of Paradise and killed 85 people. It was the deadliest and most destructive in state history.On Wednesday, the Butte County Sheriff's Office identified a previously unnamed victim as 67-year-old Shirley Haley of Paradise.Four other people have been tentatively identified while two bodies remain unidentified.After the fire, PG&E decided to stop using the line, which was built in 1921.PG&E also estimated

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Visitors and locals are expected to flock to San Diego beaches this Fourth of July weekend.While some beaches will close in California for the holiday weekend, San Diego County officials will keep local beaches open.San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said no COVID-19 community outbreaks had been linked to beaches, and without the data, it would not make sense to close them off.According to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, leaders of San Diego’s coastal communities said they believe they can manage the enforcement of social distancing and facial coverings this weekend.Longtime Solana Beach residents Richard and Lori Brenckman are frustrated by the idea of crowds flocking to the beaches during a pandemic.“The general public has shown that it’s not trustworthy to social distance,” said Lori Brenckman. “They want to gather, and most people have proven that they won’t follow the rules.”Beachgoers are required to maintain social distancing and wear a facial covering when they come within six feet of someone not from the same household. Mixing with other groups is prohibited.Lifeguards across the county are preparing for the busy weekend.“It is the big holiday of the summer, so we expect giant crowds,” said Lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero with San Diego Fire-Rescue. “This a tourist destination; everyone wants to come to San Diego. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- Many Californians have not stepped out of their homes since Thursday after Governor Gavin Newsom issued the State-wide Stay-at-home order. But some are beginning to head outdoors, just with many precautions. Just a few days into the Governor's Stay-at-home order, many San Diegans are already getting cabin fever."With our gyms closed, we got to get exercise somehow," Joann Carcioppolo said. With no access to their weights and machines, Carcioppolo and her friend Janice Meyers decided to take a stroll around Pacific Beach. Of course, keeping in mind, Rule #1. "Doing our social distancing!" Meyers laughed. Families also took to the outdoors, hiking and hitting the parks. Instead of having their children clued to their devices, the Marcussen's spent the day at Calavera Hills Community Park in Carlsbad. Mother, Candice, said today, her children's playtime had a little bit of a modification. "We're not letting them play on the playground," Marcussen said. "They brought their own toys down to make sure that we stay healthy and clean."Now that kids do not have school, and parents are working from home, things can get mundane. But many said they are trying to stay positive during this global pandemic. "Were are just trying to be kind grateful for this extra time together that we wouldn't normally have had. And just roll with it because what else are we going to do?" Marcussen asked."Everybody, get out there and move!" Meyers said. "I mean, just keep that social distance.
