A growing number of members of Congress are fearing for their own safety and they are being threatened at an alarming rate.After nearly being assassinated while at a baseball practice last year with other Republicans, Congressman Steve Scalise found himself the target of another threat this month. Authorities arrested a man, after he left threatening voicemails for Scalise. Investigators said they found 200 rounds of ammunition and books on homemade explosives at the man’s home, along with receipts for an assault rifle and a handgun, according to court records.“Hopefully he gets a serious sentence, because you can’t allow this kind of threats and violence against people based on their political views,” Scalise said during an interview on Fox News.Arizona Congressman David Schweikert has served in Congress since 2010. He said he and his family are dealing with a growing number of threats.“We had more death threats last year in my office--even one towards my little girl--than we ever had in all of the other years combined,” Schweikert said during an interview on “Plaidcast,” a podcast hosted by Rep. Sean Duffy.In June, California congresswoman Maxine Waters canceled events in Alabama and Texas, after she said she received a “very serious death threat.”According to the House Sergeant of Arms Office, the number of threats against members of Congress are skyrocketing. So far this year, the office said there have been more than 1,600 threats against members of the House alone. Last year, there were nearly 2,000 reported incidents and 902 in 2016.For the past two years, the committee that oversees security for House members, allocated ,000 for security to each of the 435 members of the House of Representatives. A Highlands County deputy has died after being shot in the head in Lake Placid on Sunday evening. Deputy William Gentry was responding to a neighborhood dispute involving a cat that allegedly had been shot by 69-year-old Joseph Edward Ables.The sheriff's office said Gentry went to speak to Ables when the suspect shot the deputy.Gentry was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital.“William is an experienced law enforcement officer and serves as one of our Field Training Deputies,” Sheriff Paul Blackman said. “His brother is one of our detectives. This is an unimaginable tragedy for our agency. Our prayers are with Deputy Gentry and his family and we ask that your prayers be with them, also.”Ables, who is a convicted felon with a history of violence towards law enforcement, was arrested at the scene and taken to the Highlands County Jail.The Highlands County Sheriff's Office released the following statement on Monday: It is with tremendous sadness that I report that Deputy William J. Gentry Jr. passed away at 1:10 p.m. today, May 7, at Lee Memorial Hospital as a result of his injuries.Please keep his family and our HCSO family in your prayers. A Caroline County, Maryland man was arrested after an investigation led to criminal charges of possession and distribution of child pornography.The suspect, Jeffrey Litteral, 52, of Denton, Maryland, has been charged with possession of child pornography, distribution of child pornography, possession of obscene material and distribution of obscene material. Litteral was arrested near his home at around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night and, from there, he was taken before a court commissioner for an initial appearance and was held without bond.This investigation began in 2017 when a Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division investigator received information about possible child pornography being uploaded to the internet. This led to Litteral and the development of evidence that enabled investigators to obtain an arrest warrant.During the investigation, detectives also learned that Litteral was employed by the United States Secret Service. Officials there assisted during his investigation and arrest.The investigation is continuing, so additional charges are possible. 1114

A hack was detected earlier this month in a government computer system that works alongside HealthCare.gov, exposing the personal information of approximately 75,000 people, according to the agency in charge of the portal.In a statement to CNN, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said the system that was exposed through the hack was the Direct Enrollment pathway, which allows agents and brokers to assist consumers with applications for coverage in the Federally Facilitated Exchanges, or FFE. The statement detailed that the agent and broker accounts that were associated with the hack were "deactivated, and -- out of an abundance of caution -- the Direct Enrollment pathway for agents and brokers was disabled.""We are working to get this functionality that exchanges agents and brokers use back up within seven days," a representative for CMS told CNN. When asked if the source of the hacking had been identified and if the system was in a good place ahead of the sign-up season beginning in November for coverage under the Affordable Care Act, the representative could not answer due to it being an active federal law enforcement investigation. 1177

A bystander video shows the moment a demonstrator was hit by a Sacramento County Sheriff's deputy's vehicle Saturday night as people protested the shooting death of Stephon Clark.The collision happened during a vigil as a woman carrying a "Stephon Clark Rest in Power" sign walked in front of a sheriff's vehicle and motioned the driver to stop, according to a video from the National Lawyers Guild Legal Observers obtained by CNN.The deputy then drove away, said Guy Danilowitz, a legal observer who recorded the video."The vehicle accelerated and struck her, accelerated very fast and struck her violently and she fell to the ground," Danilowitz said."It was a very fast acceleration, not the way you would move with people around," he added.The woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.About eight seconds before the collision, a deputy inside the sheriff's SUV could be heard on a loudspeaker repeatedly telling protesters to "back away from my car."The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said protesters approached the vehicles and "began yelling while pounding and kicking the vehicles' exterior.""The collision occurred while the patrol vehicle was traveling at slow speeds," said Sheriff's spokesman Sgt.
