SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s a chance for the community to get a behind-the-scenes look into local policing. The program, Inside SDPD, held a few times a year, aims to bridge the gap between the community and local law enforcement. As seen through local demonstrations against police brutality and rogue officers, there can be a divide that exists between law enforcement and the public. “We’re not here to say we hate all police, that’s not what we’re here for. We’re here to say that law enforcement who is acting outside the bounds of justice, equality, equity… those officers need to be fired. They need to be arrested. They need to be jailed if need be,” said Yusef Miller of the Racial Justice Coalition during an October demonstration in San Diego. There is one thing both sides agree on: wanting to build better relationships. San Diego Police see Inside SDPD as helping with that goal. It's hosted in coordination with the San Diego Police Foundation. The program introduces participants into various aspects of policing, including Taser use, use of force simulations, traffic stops, and K9 demonstrations. The goal is to make situations as realistic as possible. For first-time participant Helen Auerbach, it was eye-opening. “Certainty with the body cameras and the shootings. When you see it from one angle and you see the same thing from a different angle, it’s a completely different scenario,” she said. Teenager Logan Miller also participated. “You’re told it’s a simulation, but when you have the props… and the sound [is] very, very loud and you’re actually being interacted with on screen… again the world I keep saying [is] realistic. You are submerged in that situation,” Miller said.Team 10 asked Assistant San Diego Police Chief Paul Connelly what he would say to critics of the department. “I would just say keep an open mind. We have a very difficult job to do,” he said. In an era where community members are demanding transparency, he said the department continues to work toward that goal. “That’s something the San Diego Police Department is really striving to do. For instance, all our policies and procedures can be found on our website. And we hold events like these to invite the community out so they can see exactly how we’re trained.” Auerbach, who found out about the event through an online neighborhood website, recommends the program. “I really thing everyone should do this. I think every child should be exposed to this in school,” Auerbach said. The next "Inside SDPD" event is in December, focused specifically on K9s. There is a suggested donation for the program. Each event can hold roughly 80 people. POLICE TRANSPARENCY PROJECT DISCUSSIONJoin our Facebook group for constructive conversation around these issues. If you are a community member with questions about how the police investigate themselves or have suggestions on how officer-involved shootings or police misconduct can be prevented, we welcome you to join this group and the conversation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Los Angeles County health officials are scrambling to prevent the spread of hepatitis A after three people became infected with the potentially deadly virus while in San Diego two months ago.In a motion filed by Los Angeles County's Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn Barger, she is asking the Dept. of Public Health to provide a report within 14 days on current efforts to stop an outbreak and a plan for response should one occur."At this time Public Health does not consider there to be a hepatitis A outbreak in Los Angeles County, however it is important that the County proactively educate the community on ways to prevent hepatitis A infection, and have a response plan in the event that the County does see an increase in hepatitis A cases," Barger said in her prevention plan.Citing public health officials, Barger says that the three people who acquired the infection had been in San Diego in mid-July.READ: Most hand sanitizers will not kill Hepatitis A?San Diego County health officials are in the midst of an hepatitis A epidemic with the first cases reported early this year. The virus is known to have sickened at least 421 people and killed 16 in San Diego County. The outbreak started with the homeless and drug using population, according to health officials. Now it has spread to the general population, with nearly 50 documented cases of people becoming sick, who have no ties to homeless or drug users, said the San Diego County Public Health Department.READ:?City opens bathrooms for homeless during hep A crisisCrews are power-washing sidewalks with a bleach solution in East Village downtown.Last week, San Diego county health officials warned customers of a Pacific Beach restaurant that they may have been exposed to a person with hepatitis A on several specific dates and times.San Diego County health officials confirmed the patient worked at World Famous Restaurant while infected. READ: Statement from World Famous RestaurantHepatitis A varies in severity, with mild cases lasting two weeks or less and in more severe cases lasting four to seven weeks or longer. Some individuals, especially children, may not develop jaundice or any symptom at all. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Like Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and many others, INOVIO Pharmaceuticals has also raced to develop a COVID-19 vaccine this year.“We’ve been working really hard to move our vaccine through the stages of clinical testing. Some things have taken a little bit longer than we hoped. I think that’s kind of always the case when you’re trying to go at great light speed,” said Dr. Kate Broderick, INOVIO Pharmaceuticals Senior VP of Research & Development based in San Diego.Broderick said with funding from the U.S. Department of Defense, the biotech company started its Phase 2 clinical trial evaluating its DNA vaccine candidate, INO-4800.The first U.S. participants received a dose of the experimental vaccine earlier this month. Approximately 400 adults in the U.S. are expected to be enrolled in the trial by the end of the month.“We hope that in the early part of 2021, we’ll be going into a really large Phase 3 trial where we’re asking the question does our vaccine protect against the disease itself,” she said.Broderick said the company hopes to enroll about 6,000 participants initially in its Phase 3 trial once they get the green light to begin.A press release from the company last week stated that “The Phase 3 segment of the INNOVATE remains on partial clinical hold until INOVIO satisfactorily resolves the FDA’s remaining questions related to the CELLECTRA 2000 device that will be used to deliver INO-4800 into the cells of the skin.”Earlier data released from Pfizer and Moderna’s studies showing high vaccine efficacy was positive news for INOVIO.“We feel that we’re in a really good place. There’s eight billion people on the planet, and we’re certainly going to need quite a few different types of vaccines to ensure everybody is protected,” she said. “The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are RNA vaccines; ours is DNA vaccine”Broderick said one significant benefit of INOVIO’S DNA vaccine candidate is it doesn’t have to be stored in low-temperature freezers, making it easier to ship out worldwide if approved.“In fact, we can keep it at room temperature, sitting on a desk somewhere for a year with no impact,” she said.INOVIO is projecting to have 100 million doses of its vaccine ready in 2021.“With these vaccines being approved, there is definitely an end in sight, but don’t let your guard down too fast,” she said. “Unfortunately, until everyone in the country gets vaccinated, we will still have to adhere to those kinds of annoying things, wearing masks, socially distancing. I know it’s frustrating, especially before the holidays, but just keep yourself safe and the people you love safe.” 2648

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kelvin Barrios, a candidate for the San Diego City Council's 9th District, has announced he has contracted coronavirus."After being hospitalized two days ago, I have tested positive for COVID-19," Barrios said in a Facebook post. "While I have been following all social distancing and self-isolation recommendations, I had what I thought was a normal flu for about a week," he said.Barrios described feeling "bad body aches, sweating, headaches, labored breathing, high blood pressure, and an elevated heart rate.""I strongly urge everyone to practice social distancing and stay safe and healthy during these times," he said. 652
