SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The number of San Diegans who spend at least 90 minutes on their daily commute grew nearly 15% over the last decade, according to a recent analysis.Apartment List reports as San Diego County's workforce grew 10.8% from 2009 to 2017, "super commuters" (commuting 90 minutes or more one way) grew 14.9%. Overall though, the share of San Diego's workforce who endure a super commute is only 0.1%.The study showed the trend is much worse in other California counties like San Francisco (110.4% growth since 2009) and Los Angeles (up 22.3% since 2009).Other areas of the state located just outside San Francisco also saw large increases, like Contra Costa and Alameda Counties, which saw a 101.8% and 126.5% increases in super commute workforce, respectively.Rural counties were also more likely to endure a long commute, like Mono County, Calif., which saw a 1166.7% increase."Beyond the super commuters who drive from distant exurbs to work in the downtown offices of pricey superstar cities, we also see high rates of super commuting in some counties that are much closer to the urban core," the study said. "This is evidence of the large number of super commuters who rely on public transit. Super commuting is also common in certain pockets of rural America, particularly those with active drilling and mining industries."Extraction and construction jobs were the most likely to have the longest commute times. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego will begin its first over water testing of lighting on the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, as the Port continues efforts to install lighting across a portion of the bridge.The testing will start on Sunday, Nov. 8, and continue to Saturday, Nov. 14, from 6:15 p.m. to midnight.The testing will include 170 computer-programmed LED lights and controllers temporarily installed on three of the bridge's tallest columns near the center of the structure. Each night, a live technical test will be conducted in different colors, combinations, sequencing, and arrangements."This bridge lighting test provides San Diego a unique opportunity to see what’s possible and how the infusion of technology and art can make people feel connected to, and inspired by, our beautiful waterfront," said Commissioner Marshall Merrifield, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. "Our goal is to ignite the imaginations of every person in the San Diego region, and after years of dedicated time to the project, bring forward a viable, beautiful addition to the nighttime skyline."The testing will see periods of darkness as other aspects are being tested, so the lighting won't be constant illuminated.The upcoming testing is the second test of the project. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The only child to live through the Paradise Hills murder-suicide, died Saturday, relatives told 10News. Nine-year-old Ezequiel Valdivia passed at 11:23 Saturday night at Rady Children's Hospital after his family made the difficult decision to pull the plug."He's probably been gone from us for a while," said Karl Albright, Rosario's brother-in-law. "We were just using the machines to keep his body with us. But he has been upstairs with his family, watching us."Ezequiel's father, Jose Valdivia, also shot and killed his sons, Enzi, 3, Zuriel, 5, and Zeth, 11, and their 29-year-old mother, Sabrina Rosario. Valdivia then turned the gun on himself.The muder-suicide happened on Saturday, November 16 at the family's home on Flintridge Drive in Paradise Hills.The Paradise Hills community and the Twin Hills Little League came together to host this month's "Cruise Reo Car Show" as a fundraiser to help the family."The whole community of Paradise Hills came out today, and the Twin Hills Little League. They are our family forever," Vanessa Pash said. She, like Sabrina Rosario, is a Twin Hills Little League mom. Albright said Baby Enzi was the shy one, Zuriel was playful. Ezequiel was the athlete and Zeth was a sensitive sweetheart. All of them poured their love for baseball into the Twin Hills Little League."The little one was only three, and he wasn't old enough to play, but the coaches would let him go out there and practice, and make him feel like he was part of the team," Pash said. To honor the three players, the league decided to retire each child's jersey number. They also agreed to play in the boys' honor for all future games. Albright says he is overwhelmed with what the community continues to do for their family. "It's amazing how many people are coming together to do all of these things for complete strangers," Albright said. The family is now in the process of donating Ezequiel's organs. The boys and their mother will be buried together. "There's no pain, there's no suffering, no anguish, no anxiety. There's nothing. Pure peace," Albright said. Officers received another call en route to the home from a neighbor who said they heard arguing and what they believed to be a "nail gun firing." Three of the boys were found dead in the home. Ezequiel survived for one week, but was taken off life support November 23 after the doctors said he was brain dead, according to Rosario’s brother-in-law. The boys lived in the home with their mother and other relatives, but not Valdivia, who was in the process of divorcing Rosario. "We don't have any credible information to say that there's going to be civil unrest or large protests groups out on Election Day or soon thereafter on Election Day. However, we have been in contact with other cities throughout the United States. We've been in contact with our federal partners throughout the United States. We're preparing for possible unrest to occur on Election Day and afterward," said SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi.SDPD will not reveal exact staffing levels but said that officers will be ready to handle the calls. Lt. Takeuchi added that SDPD has nine stations throughout the city and it’s up to each station's captain to determine appropriate staffing levels for the election. He said that officers are mindful of concerns surrounding the ballots and the pandemic. “As humans, when you don't know your future, I think it brings out a little bit of anxiety and so I think that we are aware of that and the emotions,” Takeuchi added.Sean Eldridge, with Protect the Results, told ABC10 News his group is focused in part on preparing several upcoming rallies in San Diego and beyond.“Part of our work at Protect the Results is to encourage every American to be patient and realize that it could take days if not longer before we know the full count of this election,” said Eldridge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thirty roosters abandoned last month are in need of a new home.The roosters were left at an Escondido feed store on Dec. 28, 2019, with a note from the owner explaining they could no longer take care of them, the San Diego Humane Society says.SDHS says the roosters all appear to be healthy and social with each other and humans.Anyone interested in adopting the roosters can do so through SDHS' Escondido campus. Officials advise potential new owners to check with their city to make sure they are allowed to have a rooster, as some city ordinances prohibit the animals.Anyone who is unable to care for their pets are also advised to take them to a SDHS campus rather than abandoning them. SDHS is an open shelter and will never turn an animal away. 777
