Colleges across the country are finalizing plans to welcome students back. Some are bringing students fully back on campus, while others are going completely digital. Regardless of what colleges decide, many students are still planning to live on or near campus."We've come up, we think, with a plan that provides a lot of flexibility in options and recognizes the difficulties and strengths that our students, faculty and staff are faced with in light of COVID-19," said Lisa Lynch, the Provost at Brandeis University just outside of Boston.Brandeis, like Harvard, Princeton, Georgetown and all California State universities, will be offering online classes to students in the fall to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. There will still be in-person classes at a majority of universities offering online courses.Harvard is allowing minimal in-person classes, while Princeton is only allowing first- and third-year students on campus for the first semester and second- and fourth-year students for the second semester.Brandeis is offering some hybrid classes that are half online and half in person with small groups, but class sizes will be dramatically reduced."A mix of taking some lectures that perhaps have been pre-recorded or even listening in through Zoom on a live lecture, but then having opportunities to have small, in-person meetings with other students and professors and teaching assistants," said Lynch.All in-person classes will have a maximum of 28 students. Despite the online offerings and class restrictions, university officials say most students are still making the decision to live at school, not take classes online while living at home. This begs the question – will the online classes even make a difference amid the current COVID-19 pandemic?"I think the real hard thing is where you share a dorm room. Two people in the same room is hard to social distance in any real respect, in that case. But if a lot of people are online and you only have one person per room, then you have an ability to have a little more social distancing," said Dr. Kenny Banh, an emergency physician and Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education at UCSF-Fresno.Brandeis is only allowing one person per dorm room and even reserving extra housing for students who may test positive for COVID-19 and need to quarantine while at school. It's one of numerous brand-new health and safety procedures being implemented at the school, which also include twice weekly free coronavirus tests for all students and staff."The testing - asymptomatic testing - is mandatory. We'll also have everyone when they come to campus do a daily health gestation test. It's a very quick online tool that goes through and asks about fever, how they're feeling, if they're a student. And if they answer a question and it raises a flag, they’ll be immediately directed to our health center," said Lynch.With all the precautions universities are taking, it'll still be tough to prevent the social interactions that students want and need."There's no control with off-campus living, obviously, and students unfortunately tend to congregate together because it's a cheaper cost of living, right? I was a poor college student, so you often share a space because that’s what you could afford and you're trying to tend for the lowest cost possible. Unfortunately, we’ve showed our ability to socially distance and self-isolate in the younger generation is not as good," said Banh.While colleges won't be able to prevent off-campus social gatherings, many acknowledge that most healthy students aren't at the highest risk for COVID-19 complications and that any forced isolation at this critical age of their emotional and social development could do more harm than good."Recognizing in surveys, we saw with our students, in particular with our students in the spring, the process of being at home and trying to continue with studies contributed to a significant increase in stress, depression and sense of isolation," said Lynch."I think universities are doing the best they can do to be responsible. I think having an online option and having a significant part of people online will actually mitigate the risk for those there in person. So, if you take half the people and half of them are not there, then social distancing and all that stuff becomes much safer, especially for those people that are physically there," said Banh.Brandeis is also using advanced contact tracing technology so that if and when a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, they're able to immediately determine all classmates, residential halls and more, that are affected. CNN said Thursday that it had severed ties with contributor Marc Lamont Hill following controversial comments the liberal pundit made about Israel."Marc Lamont Hill is no longer under contract with CNN," a spokesperson for CNN confirmed in a short statement.The move was first reported by the media news website Mediaite.Hill, who is also a professor at Temple University in Philadelphia, made the controversial comments during a meeting at the United Nations held for the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on Wednesday.In his remarks at that meeting, Hill said "we must advocate and promote non-violence," but added that "we cannot endorse a narrow politics of respectability that shames Palestinians for resisting, for refusing to do nothing in the face of state violence and ethnic cleansing."Hill also called for a "free Palestine from the river to the sea."The comments were immediately condemned by critics who said Hill was calling for the end of the Israeli state.Hill did not respond to a request for comment Thursday afternoon, but in a series of tweets he addressed the issue."I do not support anti-Semitism, killing Jewish people, or any of the other things attributed to my speech. One professor seems to think so, colliding head-on with consumers who believe it's good for them.In her lecture at the University of Freiburg -- entirely in German and posted in July -- professor Karin Michels, of the university's Institute for Prevention and Tumor Epidemiology, calls the health claims surrounding coconut oil "absolute nonsense" and says it's "pure poison" for its saturated fat content and its threat to cardiovascular health. The video of her lecture has amassed close to a million views and counting."Coconut oil is one of the worst things you can eat," Michels said.While others have taken a more measured view, they hardly buy into the ballyhoo. A 2016 survey in the New York Times suggested that 72% of Americans think coconut oil is healthy, versus only 37% of nutritionists polled."There are many claims being made about coconut oil being wonderful for lots of different things, but we really don't have any evidence of long-term health benefits," said Dr. Walter C. Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where Michels is also an adjunct professor."Coconut oil is somewhere in the middle of the spectrum in terms of types of fats. It's probably better than partially hydrogenated oils, [which are] high in trans fats, but not as good as the more unsaturated plant oils that have proven health benefits, like olive and canola oil," Willett previously told CNN.Health organizations tend to discourage the use of coconut oil, which is more than 80% saturated fat. The American Heart Association says it's better on your skin than in your food, and it recommends that no more than 5% or 6% of your daily calories come from saturated fats -- about 13 grams per day. The association also advocates replacing coconut oil with "healthy fats" such as polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats, like those found in canola and olive oils, avocados and fatty fish.Coconut oil is "probably not quite as 'bad' as butter but not as good as extra virgin olive oil," Kevin Klatt, a molecular nutrition researcher at Cornell University who is studying the metabolic effects of coconut oil, previously told CNN.Klatt cautions that we should not develop too strong of an opinion of it without more data. "But at the same time, you have to be evidence-based ... and [currently], the evidence reflects benefits for olive oil, fish, nuts and seeds -- so that should be the focus in the diet."Coconut oil is extracted from the meat of the fruit. It contains mostly saturated fat, which is also found in large quantities in butter and red meat. Like other saturated fats, coconut oil increases LDL cholesterol, commonly known as "bad" cholesterol, which has been associated with increased risk of heart disease.But coconut oil also raises HDL, the "good" cholesterol, especially when replacing carbohydrates in the diet. This may be due to its high content of a fatty acid known as lauric acid. (This is also noted in Michel's statement summarizing her talk.)"Coconut oil is half lauric acid, which is a little bit unique," Klatt said, as the acid seems to raise HDL more than other saturated fats and is rarely found in such high amounts in foods.Still, though the increase in HDL seen with consumption of coconut oil may offset some of the disease risk, it's still not as good as consuming unsaturated oils, which not only raise HDL but lower LDL, according to Willett.Complicating matters is the fact that we still don't know for sure what exactly a high HDL translates to in terms of health risk. "There's been debate about the role of HDL," Willett cautioned. "Partly because there are many forms of HDL which have different health consequences ... which has made the water murky."For example, there are different forms of HDL that do different things. One role is to help take LDL cholesterol out of the bloodstream. "But some forms of HDL don't do that," Willett said, "so we don't know for sure that higher HDL is better."While an elevated LDL level is used as a marker for predicting cardiovascular risk and doesn't always translate to heart attacks, experts say it's still cause for concern.Research has found a mixed bag when it comes to saturated fats, and coconut oil in particular. A 2015 Cochrane review found that cutting back on saturated fats also lowered the risk of cardiovascular disease by 17% -- but it didn't change the risk of dying, and there was no benefit to replacing these fats with protein or starchy foods.Other research specifically on coconut oil has explored its effects on metabolism, appetite and cognitive function -- but "you can't infer from ... studies what coconut oil will and will not do. We need better controlled trials," Klatt said."Right now, the internet is jumping the gun and going way beyond the evidence."Like other oils, coconut oil is calorie-dense, which means consuming large amounts without reducing other calorie sources can lead to weight gain. Just one tablespoon has 120 calories, about the same as a large apple or four cups of air-popped popcorn."Oil is a really easy way to increase the energy density of a food. Things like almonds have a lot of fat, but it's easier to overeat pure oil than overeat pure almonds," Klatt said.In small amounts, however, coconut oil can have a place in one's diet. But for day-to-day use, experts recommend vegetable oils such as olive, canola or soybean oil, along with nuts and seeds, as a primary source of fats in the diet."It's not that you have to absolutely avoid coconut oil, but rather limit coconut oil to where you really need that special flavor, like for Thai food or for baking a special dessert," Willett said.Klatt agreed, saying that coconut oil "is certainly fine to consume occasionally, when a recipe calls for it."The-CNN-Wire 5933

(KGTV) - A woman in City Heights said she discovered a power cord connected to her building’s utility box, leading into nearby Swan Canyon.After pulling it up, she said it was connected to a power strip and phone charger. She suspects it was being used by homeless people who live in the canyon.The woman did not want to be identified, saying the transients in the area have been aggressive at defending their campsites. She’s worried about the safety of her and her young children, who often like to walk on the trails.She believes the cord wasn’t there for more than a day, though she claims neighbors have also sighted people using the outlet to charge phones.She said she’s worried less about her electricity bill than the potential for the haphazard wiring to spark fires in the dry open space.Her husband, who works for the property manager, put a new lock on the utility closet though she suspects it won’t last long.
