BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met with President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama here on Saturday, who are here to attend the second trilateral leaders' meeting. BEIJING, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- China has never placed any restriction on pork imports from the European Union (E.U.), and its demand for health certificate from the E.U. imported pork was needed to prevent the spread of A/H1N1 flu, said Yu Taiwei, head of China's quality watchdog's food safety export and import bureau, on Wednesday. General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) launched on Sept. 18 a measure requiring an additional testing on all pork meat from five countries including Denmark, France, Italy and Spain. The E.U.'s health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou was reported Wednesday as having interpreted China's requirement for strengthening inspection on A/H1N1 virus as "being protectionism". "We still allow these countries to export pork to China, but only ask for a more intensified inspection," said Yu. Every country should guarantee the quality securities of its export products, which is its responsibility, according to Yu. China is a major consumer of meat products. It imported 1.84 million tonnes last year. The country has also become the world's leading meat producer, whose pork output stood at 44.59 million tonnes in 2008.
BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Fifty-two types of new weapon systems developed with China's own technologies, including airborne early warning and control (AEWC) aircraft, will be showcased at the military parade celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of New China. Further cutting-edge weaponry would include sophisticated radar, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and satellite communication devices of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), Lieutenant General Fang Fenghui, general director of the parade, told Xinhua Wednesday. The Oct. 1 parade would also show personnel and equipment from the navy, air force and China's ballistic missile corps, Fang said. Fang did not identify the specific models of the weapon systems but said all of the weapons are tagged: "Made in China". "They (the weapon systems) embody the ongoing transformation of the PLA from a labor-intensive force to technology-intensive might be capable of joint operations in modern warfare," said Fang, who is also commander of the PLA's Beijing Military Area Command. "The weapon systems to be shown in the parade also showcase the ability of the PLA to carry out diverse military missions," he said. There will be 56 regiments on the ground and in the air during the parade, symbolizing the country's 56 ethnic groups marching along the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics in solidarity, Fang said. Fourteen of the regiments will march through Chang'an Avenue on foot, 30 in wheeled transport and 12 will take to the air. All the troops in the parade will be dressed in PLA 07-type uniforms and most of them are from generations born in the 1980s and 1990s. HONG KONG, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China displayed a scale model of its jetliner C919,the country's first home-grown large commercial airliner, for the first time at the Asian Aerospace '09 on Tuesday. With a scale of one to ten, the model was so far "the most precise one put up for public display," said Guo Bozhi, president of the Shanghai Aircraft Design and Research Institute, a unit of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, or COMAC. The mockup was displayed at a prominent position at the Asian Aerospace, Asia's leading air show, side by side with industry giants like Boeing and Airbus. Together with some ten other Chinese mainland-based manufacturers, suppliers and service providers at the show, it attracted attention of media from around the world. If successful, COMAC plans to produce 50 C919 aircraft each year at the early stage and annual production could reach 100 or even more at a later stage, depending on how it is received by the market, Guo said.
