Banner Health experts are warning the public against using "inappropriate medications" after an Arizona man died and his wife was hospitalized after taking chemicals they believed could help protect against coronavirus.On Sunday, the man and his wife, both in their 60s, took chloroquine phosphate, an additive commonly used to clean fish tanks, and within 30 minutes experienced effects that required admittance to a nearby Banner Health facility. The man died and his wife remains under critical care, according to a hospital spokesperson.The woman, who was able to throw up the chemicals, is likely going to survive, said the spokesperson.The woman reportedly told hospital staffers that she and her husband ingested the product after reading a "fake" article online and saw symptoms shortly after taking it. “Given the uncertainty around COVID-19, we understand that people are trying to find new ways to prevent or treat this virus, but self-medicating is not the way to do so,” said Dr. Daniel Brooks, Banner Poison and Drug Information Center medical director. “The last thing that we want right now is to inundate our emergency departments with patients who believe they found a vague and risky solution that could potentially jeopardize their health.” 1272

AURORA, Colo. – One of the deans of instruction at Aurora West College Preparatory Academy was arrested Thursday on suspicion of carrying a weapon on school grounds and carrying a concealed weapon.Tushar Rae, 30, was still jailed in Denver Thursday afternoon on a 0,000 bond following his arrest stemming from the case out of Arapahoe County, according to court records.Carrying a weapon on school grounds is a class 6 felony while carrying a concealed weapon is a class 2 misdemeanor in Colorado.According to an informed source with knowledge of the investigation, arresting documents detail a tense confrontation between the school's principal and Rae before his arrest.The documents show Principal Taisiya “Taya” Tselolikhina received a text at around 2 p.m. Wednesday from Rae, telling her to “meet in the office” after the dean of instruction didn’t show up to school the whole day and didn't inform anyone he was going to be absent.Once in the office, Rae reportedly placed a gun on a counter and said, “Try and f—k with me. You shouldn’t have said what you said. I don’t want to hurt you. I’m going to hurt all the people around you.”The documents also stated Rae then said he was going to “shoot the kneecaps off two other people” before asking the principal what she was going to do about it."I came prepared,” Rae allegedly told Tselolikhina before he patted his pocket adding that “he had two extra rounds.”The arresting documents show Rae then told the principal to walk away or he would “shoot the next person outside the door.”The documents then state two students were outside the office and the school was placed on lockdown.Aurora police tweeted Wednesday that West Middle School was on lockdown because of a threat of an armed party in the area. ATLANTA, Ga. – The Centers for Disease Control said Tuesday that it appears inevitable that COVID-19 will spread in United States communities. Officials said it’s no longer a matter of if, but when. Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said during a conference call that the spread of the new coronavirus in countries other than China has officials concerned about outbreaks in the U.S. "Ultimately we expect we will see community spread in this country," said Messonier. "It’s not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness."The CDC says the agency is preparing to address the potential spread of the virus in the U.S. and it's encouraging Americans to begin planning as well. "We will maintain, for as long as practical, a dual approach where we continue measures to contain this disease, but also employ strategies to minimize the impact on our communities," said Messonier.Messonier said that officials don't know whether the spread of the disease in the U.S. would be mild or severe, but Americans should be ready for "significant disruptions" to their daily lives.“We are asking the American public to prepare for the expectation that this might be bad,” Messonnier said.If the virus begins to spread amongst Americans, the CDC says it will becomes increasingly important to implement basic precautions to prevent more infections. The CDC says more than 2,400 people have died from COVID-19 worldwide, with a majority of the deaths in mainland China. However, other countries are now battling sizable outbreaks as well. Europe’s biggest outbreak is in Italy, where more than 280 people have reportedly been infected. Iran has reported at least 95 cases. And, South Korea has more than 970 cases. As of Tuesday, the CDC had confirmed 14 cases in the U.S., 12 being travel-related and two from person-to-person spread. A total of 43 cases have been confirmed in the group of people repatriated to the U.S. from either Wuhan or the Diamond Princess cruise ship off the coast of Japan, the CDC says.
