A former top official from Beijing is facing prosecution for taking bribes from property developers, advertising companies and other businesses, a local newspaper reported Thursday.Zhou Liangluo, 46, former head of Haidian district, the city's thriving university and hi-tech hub, received bribes totaling 16 million yuan (.2 million) from 10 businesses and individuals, the Beijing Times reported.Caijing magazine said on its website last month that Zhou was apparently uncovered when authorities were investigating Liu Zhihua - the former vice-mayor of Beijing - for alleged corruption and finding out that a real estate developer Liu Jun had been bribing the two. However, there is so far no evidence proving the alleged links.Investigators last month handed Zhou's case to a city court for trial. His wife, Lu Xiaodan, also faces charges of taking more than 8 million yuan in bribes, the paper said.Beijing has enjoyed an influx of investment over recent years, partly spurred by its preparations to host the Olympics Games.Zhou's posts in Haidian, and before that in Chaoyang district, gave him a big say over lucrative projects. The report did not say when Zhou and Lu are to be tried or how they are expected to plead to the possible charges.

The CCTV footage shows that China's first lunar probe Chang'e-1 successfully completed its 1,580,000-km flying journey to the moon after entering its final working orbit on Wednesday's morning, Nov. 7, 2007. [CCTV.com]China's first lunar probe, Chang'e-I, completed its 1,580,000-km flying journey to the moon successfully on Wednesday's morning after entering its final working orbit. The probe, following the instructions of the Beijing Aerospace Control Center (BACC), started its third braking at 8:24 am and entered a 127-minute round polar circular orbit at around 8:35 am after completing the braking."The probe will travel along the orbit at a stable altitude of 200 km above the moon's surface. In each circle, it will always pass the two polars," said Wang Yejun, chief engineer of the Beijing Aerospace Control Center (BACC).The round orbit is also the final destination of the probe, where it is supposed to start carrying out all the planned scientific exploration tasks. It was originally designed to stay on the orbit for one year, but a researcher estimated that fuel saved by smooth operations and precise maneuvers may prolong its life span.Chang'e-I, named after a legendary Chinese goddess who flew to the moon, blasted off on a Long March 3A carrier rocket on Oct. 24 from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwestern Sichuan Province.

TAIPEI, June 23 - Taiwan "presidential candidate" Ma Ying-jeou, who is from the main opposition party, has picked a "former premier" and economic expert as his running-mate for the 2008 election. Ma, from the Nationalist Party or Kuomintang (KMT) and one of two serious contenders for the "presidency", chose former "premier Vincent" Siew because of his experience, one of Ma's aide told Reuters. Siew, 68, served as "economics minister" from 1990 to 1993 and as "premier" from 1997 to 2000 under then "president" Lee Teng-hui. He now chairs the authoritative Chung-hua Institute for Economic Research. Siew ran unsucessfully for "vice-president" alongside KMT candidate Lien Chan in 2000, when opposition leader Chen Shui-bian swept to power, putting an end to half a century of Nationalist rule. Ma faces a close contest next year with Frank Hsieh, candidate of Chen's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

JINAN - Seven fishermen on two boats were rescued on Saturday off east China after their boats lost control in high gales, local rescue sources said. The engine of a fishing boat with six people aboard at the Bajiao offshore area near Yantai city, Shandong Province stopped working around 1:20 p.m. Saturday as its screw propeller was enlaced by aquatic plants amid sudden gales on the sea. A helicopter from the Beihai No. 1 Rescue Flying Squad was dispatched to the site and rescued the six in 20 minutes. The helicopter saved another fisherman on a separate boat on its way back. All the rescued fishermen were sent to Penglai, an island city near Yantai, Saturday afternoon.

Conservation efforts appear to be helping China's endangered giant panda expand its habitat in parts of western China, the Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday. Panda cubs play at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan province, May 24, 2007. [Reuters]The animal's droppings were recently discovered in areas beyond its known habitat in the bamboo forests of the 220,000 hectare (550,000 acre) Baishuijiang Nature Reserve, on the border of Gansu and Sichuan provinces. "This indicates an expansion of the giant panda's habitat -- and probably of its population too," Huang Huali, vice director of the Baishuijiang Nature Reserve Administration, was quoted as saying. The pandas have been helped by efforts to curb insect pests, which have restored the bamboo forests since 2002, Huang said. China's State Forestry Administration has estimated 1,590 pandas live in the wild, mostly in the mountains of Sichuan, although a study by Chinese and British scientists released last year calculated there could be as many as 3,000.
