SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A nursing assistant at a Rancho Bernardo senior care facility is battling for her life, diagnosed with COVID-19. In terms of coronavirus, Villa Rancho Bernardo care center is among the hardest-hit senior care facilities in the county. In early May, Lani says her sister, Irene Branch, a longtime nursing assistant there, told her about all the sick calls, and repeated her insistence to keep working."She always has a big heart. If they are short, she always go to work," said Lani.Around the same time, Branch started to feel sick."Coughing a little bit, no appetite and a short fever," said Lani. Her symptoms quickly got worse and a few days later, Lani got a frightening call from her sister. "She had shortness of breath, so I told her to call 911," said Lani. She did, and a day later in the ICU, Branch was on a ventilator. She received donated plasma containing COVID-19 antibodies, but her condition has deteriorated. Kidney failure has led to ongoing dialysis."I pray. Our family is praying a lot. Every one is praying for her," said Lani.Lani says doctors recently removed her from a medically induced coma, but she remains comatose. "She can't wake up. That's the problem. She's not waking up ... It's hard. I can't accept it right now," said Lani.Unable to visit her sister because of COVID-19 restrictions, Lani recently talked to Branch via Facetime while a hospital worker held up a phone."Telling her we are here to support her. Letting her know we are not abandoning her ... I am very hopeful. I will not give up," said Lani. According to the latest state numbers, 45 residents and 30 staff members at Villa Rancho Bernardo have tested positive for COVID-19.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help with medical expenses. 1767

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Kearny Mesa company that trains military and first responders at a local movie and TV studio is pivoting to help solve the county's homelessness crisis.Strategic Operations, located in the backlot of Stu Segall Productions television and movie studio, says it plans to begin building temporary housing for homeless families out of shipping containers. The studio lot is filled with shipping containers that have been converted into commercial, residential, and industrial settings to help military, first responders, and medical professionals train. Kit Lavell, Strategic Operations executive vice president, says that the same approach can be brought to constructing temporary housing, which they're calling "Strategic Habitats," and for less."Strategic Habitats are larger than hotel rooms, which recently have been converted to homeless housing, while our Strategic Habitats are priced 30 to 40 percent less than converted hotels or new construction," Lavell said in a release. "Additionally, Strategic Habitats are much quicker to complete over new construction and the units can easily be assembled in a variety of configurations and placed on parking lots or any open property."The 480-square-foot containers will be furnished with plumbing, air conditioning and heating, a double-burner stove, microwave, and refrigerator. Bedrooms will sleep two adults and two children and the housing units can be placed side-by-side or stacked. Lavell says several city officials have visited to tour the potential tool to address the region's homelessness.Ashley Bailey, senior press secretary and director of digital media with Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office, said in a statement that the idea is still in its early stages."The City is open to exploring all solutions that help create more housing stock and address homelessness. This idea is in its early stages, and would need to be vetted to ensure that the units are equipped with proper safety and habitability features, as well as the ongoing care that many individuals need. We look forward to hearing more from the proponents about the proposal," Bailey said. 2141

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man claimed four off-duty San Diego Police officers beat up him outside of a local bar.“I have a laceration on the back of my head, three staples, a lot of bruises a lot of cuts on the face,” said Jonathan Felix.Standing in his attorney’s office, Jonathan Felix described a November night he’ll never forget."All I remember is waking up in my own pool of blood a few times,” Felix told 10News.Felix said that after working a shift at a restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter, he stopped by a Mission Valley bar for a drink. He said he lives nearby and uses its parking lot because parking in the area is scarce.According to Felix, before he headed home for the night, he saw four men standing near his car. He said he didn’t know them, but wanted to make sure the valuables he had in his vehicle were safe.He said after a few interactions with the guys, they didn't leave and appeared to be intoxicated. He claimed the men never identified themselves as San Diego Police officers."I felt threatened for my life,” Felix said.Felix's attorney said at some point, Jonathan Felix pulled a gun and held it at his side. The officers surrounded him, and the situation escalated. The San Diego Police department saw it differently, calling the off-duty officers victims of assault with a deadly weapon. In a statement the department sent 10News after the November incident, a spokesperson wrote: 1419

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A political kingmaker is using his fortune to shake up the San Diego race for District Attorney. The first television ads are hitting airwaves now, little more than a month before the election. The element of surprise surrounds the tone of an ad paid for by billionaire George Soros. He’s known for backing progressive candidates and shaking up elections, usually with controversial ads.The ad lays out Geneviéve Jones Wright’s qualifications to be San Diego County’s next District Attorney. It does not attack her opponent Summer Stephan, which is what most politicos expected.Jones Wright told 10News she had not seen the ad.Stephan’s campaign manager said he’s surprised the ad is more of an introduction than an attack. Jason Roe also said there is no doubt in his mind the gloves will come off, based on what he called Soros’ pattern of negative and dishonest ads.Jones Wright filed a complaint with the attorney general claiming Stephan was basically campaigning on the job and using photo ops with law enforcement in her campaign materials.Stephan’s campaign manager called it a distraction. 1128
