BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Beijing launched a one-month household registration survey on Sunday in preparation for the once-a-decade census of China, the world's most populous country, which begins in November.A total of 100,000 uniformed census takers will go door-to-door in Beijing from Aug. 15 to Sept. 15, along with policemen, to check each household's current residential information, said a spokesman with the sixth national population census' Beijing office.Foreigners and residents of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan will also be surveyed for the first time, except those on short-term business or sightseeing trips, according to a census regulation jointly issued by the State Council and the National Bureau of Statistics in May."This is because the upcoming national census seeks to survey 'every natural person' in China and Chinese citizens who live abroad but have not obtained long-term living permits," said Su Hui, director of the office.The survey aims to count the total number of Beijing residents and to correct false household registration information and provide accurate information for the sixth national census, he said.Experts say that many households do not unregister their deceased family members so they might continue collecting social insurance funds from the government. LANZHOU, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- China plans to spend 2.23 billion yuan (328 million U.S. dollars) to improve disaster prevention systems in a mountainous northwest China town devastated by a landslide earlier this month, local officials said Tuesday.The planned multi-billion yuan project to prevent further geological disasters in Zhouqu County, south of Gansu Province, had passed reviews by experts from the Ministry of Land and Resources, said Guo Yuhu, vice-director of the provincial land and resources department.The plan is scheduled to be carried out in three phases from 2010 to 2012, Guo said.Guo noted that the project includes improving disaster warning systems, drawing up emergency resettlement plans, conducting a thorough study of the geological disaster hazards, and setting up a capable monitoring network.A late-night avalanche of mud and rocks roared down the mountain slopes in the county seat of Zhouqu on Aug. 8, burying villages and blocking the Bailong River, a major regional river.At least 1,447 people were killed and 318 remain missing, according to the latest government information.The mudslide left a thick layer of sludge, about 5 kilometer long and 500 meters wide, in the center of the town. YUSHU, Qinghai, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government on Saturday started a massive multi-million-dollar project to restore 87 monasteries damaged in a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that shook a predominantly Tibetan area in northwest China in April.Monks and officials gathered at the new site of Trangu Monastery in Yushu, Qinghai Province, for a brief ground-breaking ceremony. Monks from the 700-year-old monastery, whose former buildings collapsed in the quake, held a prayer service, chanting sutras and turning prayer wheels to mark the start of the rebuilding.More than 2,200 people were killed after the 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Yushu. The entire town of Gyegu, the seat of Yushu prefectural government, was flattened, leaving more than 100,000 residents homeless.Lodroe Nyima Rinpoche, a living Buhhda of the Trangu Monastery, said monks felt "grateful" for the government efforts to rebuild damaged monasteries.Three best known monasteries damaged in the Yushu quake were Trangu, Gyegu and Renyak.The repair of Gyegu Monastery also started on Saturday.Qinghai's Ethnic Affairs Committee said the central government had earmarked 1 billion yuan for the monastery restoration in Yushu. BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank and banking regulatory commission have ordered the country's financial institutions to provide preferential loan policies to victims in the mudslide-hit regions of Gansu and Sichuan provinces.The minimum down payment for a home in the disaster-affected urban regions could be reduced to 10 percent while the interest rate for home loans could be cut to possibly 60 percent of the benchmark rate, the People's Bank of China, the central bank, and China Banking Regulatory Commission said in a joint statement issued over the weekend.Banks were also asked to help ease loan pressures for rural residents in the disaster-affected regions.A massive mudslide, which took place on Aug. 8 in Zhouqu County of northwest China's Gansu Province, has killed 1,248 people as of 4 p.m. Sunday, with 496 still missing. Flooding and mudslides in southwest China's Sichuan Province has left at least 13 dead and 59 missing.
