SINGAPORE, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's first locally-built satellite has been officially launched from a space center in India after a four-year delay, Singapore media reported on Thursday.The 105 kg fridge-size X-Sat was one of three riding on Isro's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C16) from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in India on Wednesday. It will be used to take photographs to measure soil erosion and environmental changes on earth, local daily Straits Times said.The launch at 12:42 p.m. on Wednesday was the 18th successful lift-off since the maiden flight of PSLV in 1994.The satellite was designed and built by Singapore's Nanyang Technological University and Singapore's defense research body DSO National Laboratories.Now in orbit, the satellite is establishing communication contact with the ground control in Nanyang Technological University, a process that is likely to take up to a week.The launch capped more than nine years of hard work by scientists and engineers. It also makes Singapore one of the first countries in Southeast Asia to have its own satellite in space. Previous satellite launched by Singapore involved construction efforts by foreign companies.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Yahoo Inc. on Wednesday introduced a new feature to its search engine, which the company said can deliver answers and direct access to websites before users complete their query or hit the search button.The new feature, called Search Direct, predicts search results as fast as a person types and presents those results dynamically, Yahoo said."With today's launch, direct answers -- not the search results page -- is the primary focus. We are redefining the search process and prominently displaying direct answers where search decisions are being made," Shashi Seth, Yahoo's senior vice president of search and marketplaces, said in a statement."Search Direct is evidence of Yahoo continuing to lead innovation in search, enabling people to take action faster, find what is most important, and sample what is possible with the next stage of search technology," he added.Yahoo announced that Search Direct is rolling out in a public test version to its users across the United States Wednesday, and will be available in other Yahoo products and markets later this year.

PARIS, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Heavy load launcher Ariane 5 lifted off two communication satellites, Yahsat Y1A and Intelsat New Dawn, at around 6:37 p.m. local time (2137 GMT) on Friday from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana.Yahsat Y1A is the first United Arab Emirates satellite launched by Arianespace. It is built by Astrium and Thales Alenia Space and will be positioned at 52.5 degrees East. With a design life of 15 years, it will be operated by the Al Yah Satellite Communications Company, a telecommunications company indirectly controlled by the Abu Dhabi Government.Weighing around 5,935 kilograms at lift-off, Yahsat Y1A was expected to be separated first around 27 minutes after the launcher started the flight.The second passenger Intelsat New Dawn was built by Orbital Sciences Corporation and weighs about 3,000 kilograms. Also with a designed life span of 15 years, it is planned to be positioned at 32.8 degrees East.Via the second mission of Ariane 5 in 2011, Yahsat Y1A will provide customized relay services for the government and commercial sectors in the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Southwest Asia, while Intelsat New Dawn will work as a part of the global Intelsat fleet, offering service for Africa.This launch, the 201st of an Ariane family vehicle since 1979, brought to 22 the number of Intelsat satellites serving Africa, according to the launching company.Originally scheduled for liftoff on March 30, this dual-payload mission was delayed following an interruption of the final countdown when an incorrect displacement of one of the engine's actuators was detected, Arianespace said in a statement. BEIJING, March 11(Xinhuanet)-- People with more fat around their waist, often known as “apple shape”, may not have a greater risk of heart attack than those with fatter bottoms and hips, according to a new study published in Lancet as quotted by media reports Friday.This study funded by the Medical Research Council and British Heart Foundation, reviewed 220,000 individual records from 17 countries and monitored the occurrence of heart attacks or strokes based on body mass index (BMI) versus waist-hip circumference. It found that people with "apple-shaped" obesity were at a higher risk of having heart risks compared to those with general obesity as assessed by their BMI.  This contradicts previous claims that "apple shaped" bodies were three times more likely to suffer heart attacks than those with more generally distributed fat.But experts warn obesity is still bad for the heart, no matter where the fat is, and they argue there is confusion about the best way to measure it. "Regardless of how you measure it, being obese is bad for your heart. This study suggests that measuring your waist is no better than calculating your BMI but it's not time to throw away the tape measure just yet, “Dr Mike Knapton, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation said."We tend to underestimate our body shape and size, so measuring our waist or checking our BMI are both quick and easy ways we can check our health at home."Besides, he also listed some other heart risk factors that we need to think about too, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and smoking.
