BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday paid a morale-boosting visit to the country's Paralympic athletes, urging them to "strive to become strong and fight for the best."     With 16 days to go until the opening ceremony in Beijing, Hu, accompanied by Vice President Xi Jinping, went to the training center for Paralympic athletes in a northeastern suburb of the capital in the morning. NAIROBI, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Armed Somali pirates hijacked Wednesday a Hong Kong bulk carrier with 25 crew members, 24 of them Chinese, off the Somali coast, the Chinese embassy in Nairob confirmed.     The bulk carrier owned by Sinotrans of Hong Kong was en route from Tunisia to Pipavav, India when it was hijacked off the eastern coast of Somalia, the 14th of such seizure by the pirates in the past two months, said Andrew Mwangura, an coordinator of the East Africa Seafarers Assistance Program (SAP).     Besides the 24 Chinese, a Sri Lankan captain was also on board the vessel that was captured, Mwangura told Xinhua by telephone.     The carrier was the second Hong Kong ship hijacked this week in the region. A Hong Kong-registered carrier was hijacked on Monday near the Somali coast with 22 crew on board. None of them were Chinese citizens.     Somalia's 3,300-kilometer coastline is considered by the International Maritime Bureau one of the world's most dangerous stretches of waters due to piracy as the Horn of Africa remains plagued by factional fighting since 1991.     Over 30 foreign ships have been captured by pirates near the Somali coast this year and more than 10 of them remain in the hands of pirates

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- The spacewalk performed by Chinese taikonauts Zhai Zhigang Saturday afternoon marks a major breakthrough in China's space program, Chinese President Hu Jintao said.     Hu talked with the trio taikonauts at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center for the Shenzhou-7 mission at 6:35 p.m. Saturday, when he inquired the physical conditions of the three taikonauts.     "Your country and your fellow citizens thank you for your devotion to the space program," he said.     He congratulated the trio over the success of the spacewalk, and encouraged them to continue the efforts for a "complete success.     Zhai Zhigang was assisted during the spacewalk by Liu Boming in the orbit module. China is the third country in the world to accomplish the feat after the United States and Russia. "We conducted the space scientific tests as planned and the EVA went smoothly."     Hu hailed the spacewalk as a sign of the country's progress in space scientific technology.     "You have made outstanding contribution to our country's space project," said Hu. BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) on Saturday said it expects an increase in grain output for the fifth consecutive year.     The country has harvested nearly 80 percent of its autumn crops and expects 2008 to be a bumper year, the ministry stated.     The State Grain Information Center earlier estimated that this year's grain output would reach 511.5 million tons, up 10 million tons from 2007.
