The Federal Trade Commission said Americans should be wary if they receive a phone call regarding their stimulus check. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the US government issued ,200 checks to millions of Americans with a number of businesses closed. The FTC is warning that scammers could potentially try to trick you out of your personal information. The agency says that fraudsters rig caller ID to make the number appear to come from a government hotline.“Government agencies usually will not call or email you — especially about something related to money. They almost always contact you by US mail,” the FTC said. The IRS is sending letters to Americans as a confirmation for receiving the stimulus check. The FTC says that scammers will claim to be calling over something such as Medicare, Social Security, or in this case, your stimulus check, and will ask for personal information to verify.“If you get a call or email from the IRS or any government agency asking you for personal information or money, that’s a scam. Hang up the phone or delete the email,” the FTC said.If you have questions about your stimulus check, you can call an IRS hotline at 800-919-9835.The IRS said earlier this month that 159 million Americans have received a stimulus check. The IRS is still working on sending out the remaining checks to qualified Americans. 1367

Stress and pressure can lead to overeating, but nutritionists say a healthy diet is a better choice for managing what life throws at you. We looked into how nutrition can play a role in helping you rebound from these tough times. “At your physical healthiest that’s going to be the condition that supports your best mental wellness as well,” said University of Arizona Assistant Professor of Nutritional Sciences Ann Skulas-Ray.Skulas-Ray says in times like these, you want to give your yourself what you need. A poor diet is more like giving yourself the flu.“Think about when you are sick, so you have all this inflammation in your body. Have you ever tried to do your best work under those conditions when your whole body is inflamed? It doesn’t work,” Skulas-Ray said. She says the first step is to cut down on the junk. Highly processed foods, refined sugars and corn syrup feel good in the moment, but are not a recipe for long-term happiness.Skulas-Ray says there are a million diets out there, but she says most people can benefit from keeping it simple. Eat more fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, and fatty fish.“Omega-3s are a good one, because the brain is actually made out of omega-3s," she said. "They are directly responsible for regulating inflammation in the body.”You also don't have to make drastic life changes overnight. Minor changes over time can go a long way.“Nobody eats a perfect diet, it's just about small changes you make over time,” she said. “And you should feel good about each incremental improvement.” This article was written by Brian Brennan for KGUN. 1616

The Ohio Department of Agriculture issued a warning about an insect that could kill wine in Ohio. The spotted lanternfly can cause significant damage to some plants and has been seen in Pennsylvania. According to the Department of Agriculture, the insect is fond of grape and fruit trees, hops, blueberry, oak, pine, poplar and walnut. Adult spotted lanterflies usually eat grapevines, while nymphs eat multiple types of plants. The insects eat stems and leaves, which can cause sap to bleed and reduce photosynthesis, which can eventually kill the plant.Spotted lanternflies can be spotted now through November. The insect can be identified by its red body, roughly a half-inch in size, with black stripes and white dots. Later this summer until November, the insect is in the adult moth stage. The adults are larger, roughly one inch in size, with black bodies and brightly colored wings. The insect has not been confirmed in Ohio yet but residents who believe they have spotted one are asked to report it online or by calling 614-728-640. PALM HARBOR, Fla. — While doctors, first responders and local health departments are asking people to not gather in large groups for the Thanksgiving holiday, there are still many families who say they're planning to get together regardless. After major holidays, doctors have typically seen spikes in COVID-19 numbers.Doctors are sharing what to do if you learn someone in your group has symptoms of COVID-19 or tests positive for the virus.First, assess if you yourself have symptoms of COVID-19. These include cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, fever, chills, loss of taste or smell, diarrhea, vomiting, and severe headaches and body aches. If you do, medical workers say go get a test right away. But if you don't have symptoms, but believe you may have been exposed, doctors say you and your immediate family will need to self-quarantine. Then, wait about five days to get tested."The reason for doing that is that you will probably get a false negative test if you do the test, and the first one or two or three, four days, since the exposure because there's not enough viral load in your nose," said Dr. Lara Cavanaugh with Children's Medical Center in Palm Harbor.?Something else important to keep in mind is just because you get a negative test result after five days does not mean you are necessarily in the clear.Doctors say you can still become positive for the virus and they say you should continue to quarantine for a full 14 days after exposure. A Port St. Lucie man is recovering after he was bitten on the leg by an 8-foot alligator while walking his dog over the weekend, authorities said.According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Mark Johnson, 61, was attacked near a canal in a Port St. Lucie development around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday."I kind of slide and my foot is stuck in the mud, and the next thing I know, I see the lunge," Johnson said. "He starts clamping down pretty tight and he started to pull, and the next thing I do, I instantly, here's my fingers, I poke through the eye."Johnson said the gator was trying to drag him under the water, spinning while clamping down on the victim's leg."This gator was coming in fast. He was aggressive," Johnson said. "My foot was hanging out of the corner of his mouth."Johnson said that after he poked the gator in the eye, it let go of his leg and took off."I had to do something. That's what I say, you have seconds to react," Johnson said. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he received 62 stitches in his right left and was later released.Johnson said his dog Rex was not hurt. The FWC said an alligator trapper responded to the area of the attack and captured an 8-foot gator. The reptile was then relocated to an alligator farm.People with concerns about gators should call FWC's nuisance alligator hotline at 1-866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286).
