She's my little sister," said a tearful Jill."We miss her so much. She had a bright future ... She was always so motivated," said Duncan.By the age of 14, Briana had run two marathons. She excelled at soccer and the violin. The honors student was accepted into a scholarship program at Stanford this summer but had to withdraw due to mental health issues, including depression.Amid the recent protests aimed at racial injustice, Brianna was called to action."She was inspired by the movement. She wanted her voice to be heard," said Jill.Her participation took her to Los Angeles."She started off with a good crowd that wanted to help people, and over time, she just met the wrong people," said Jill.Brianna was due back home Aug. 11 for orientation at Cal State San Marcos, but she never made it home.Inside a park in Echo Park, Los Angeles, a memorial marks the area where on Aug. 9, Brianna's body was discovered in a tent. The family says they were told by the medical examiner's office that Brianna died from an overdose: cocaine secretly laced with fentanyl.Earlier this month, law enforcement officials issued a warning about a large local spike in deaths linked to the synthetic opioid fentanyl. Experts say amid the COVID-19 pandemic, people may turn to substance abuse to deal with stress. Brianna's family suspects she recently began experimenting with drugs. (KGTV) – A father and his young son were hospitalized after a fire erupted at their mobile home in Oceanside.The fire was reported Tuesday at around 10:30 p.m. at a mobile home park on 251 Blue Springs Lane, according to Oceanside Fire officials.Witnesses told ABC 10News that the blaze started in the back of a mobile home, trapping a man and his son inside.As flames engulfed the home, some neighbors tried to put out the fire by spraying water from garden hoses.However, one neighbor heard banging coming from a window and a call for help. That neighbor got to the window, smashed it, and was then handed the boy by his father. Moments later, the neighbor helped the father crawl through the broken window.Responding firefighters were able to knock the fire down within 20 minutes. No other homes appeared to have been damaged by the blaze.ABC 10News learned the child was airlifted to Rady Children’s Hospital after suffering smoke inhalation.The boy’s father was transported by helicopter to UC San Diego’s Burn Center with burn injuries and cuts from the broken window.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 1146

(KGTV) — An Oceanside officer was taken to the hospital Tuesday after a man broke a patrol vehicle's windshield, sending glass into the officer's eyes.OPD said a man known to police as a transient got into a confrontation with an officer at College Ave. and North River Rd. at about 5 p.m. The man reportedly used an object to break the windshield of the officer's vehicle, injuring the officer's eyes with glass.The officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and will reportedly be okay, according to OPD.The San Diego Sheriff's Department, Carlsbad Police, and an ASTREA helicopter helped in the search for the suspect. SDSO said just before 7 p.m. that the suspect was in custody.According to City News Service, the suspect was armed with a machete. The suspect reportedly stabbed a police dog during his arrest.
