COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Wednesday marks five years since nine black worshipers were killed in a racist attack at a church in Charleston, South Carolina.The white supremacist shooter, Dylan Roof, targeted his victims because of the color of their skin. He was later convicted on murder and hate crime charges. He was sentenced to death and is awaiting execution at a federal prison in Indiana.The massacre at Mother Emanuel AME church on June 17, 2015, led South Carolina leaders to remove the Confederate flag from the capitol lawn.But as the U.S. is roiled again by more shocking deaths of African Americans, South Carolina isn't removing more monuments of historical figures who repressed or oppressed blacks.Republican leaders like House Speaker Jay Lucas said in 2015 they would not consider any more changes after the Confederate flag came down and have kept their word. And state law protects monuments without a two-thirds vote of the Legislature.To mark the anniversary of the massacre, the people behind the documentary “Emanuel” will hold a discussion about racial justice. The movie explores the shooting and race relations in the port city that once served as a gateway to the slave trade.Producers Mariska Hargitay and Viola Davis will be part of the discussion, and U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clayborn will host the event, The Post and Courier reports.The discussion will be streamed live on Facebook starting at 6 p.m. ET Tuesday and the film is available to watch online for free here until June 23. 1523

CLEVELAND — A Cleveland website is facing backlash after attempting to be humorous about the foreclosure crisis and sex trafficking. Coolcleveland.com wrote an article about an upcoming gingerbread house making event at restaurant TownHall. In the now deleted post, the site said "the foreclosure crisis left a lot of empty gingerbread houses around Cleveland. Many end up becoming dens for cracker addicts." It also mentioned "gingerbread sex slaves."A spokesperson for TownHall said they were upset by the post. "We are appalled by the article written by Cool Cleveland. We had no prior knowledge of the article, nor did we approve the article in any way.  The moment we saw the post, I personally called Cool Cleveland to express the inappropriateness and requested it be taken down immediately," Director of Communications Kayla Barnes said. A publisher for Coolcleveland.com apologized for the post and wanted others to know TownHall was not responsible for the content. You can read the full apology below:  1066

CINCINNATI — A Mason, Ohio woman said a "hero" tended to another woman who was suffering from seizures during a flight from Houston to Cincinnati on Sunday, and she wants to know why the pilot didn't land so the woman could get medical attention.Amy Hammond said a woman, who appeared to have a young boy with her, two rows in front of her began seizing as the plan was ascending out of Houston, about a minute or two after takeoff on United flight 3466. A man sitting nearby said he worked for a fire department and began to help her, despite being initially scolded for being in the aisle during the ascent, Hammond said. He asked if there was a doctor and then tended to the woman himself through seizures and periods of unresponsiveness. The good Samaritan helped the woman for more than two hours, according to Hammond."He 100 percent kept the plane calm," she said. "He kept us calm because he was so in control."The woman seized "dozens of times" during the flight, but the man would keep her breathing and wake her up, according to Hammond. About 40 minutes in, another person also stood up to help. She said they went through nearly two cans of oxygen from onboard the plane."He just kept her talking, kept right in her face, just kept her going," Hammond said. "And then he knew he was losing her and all this stuff. Companies are using some pretty sneaky tactics to make you think you're getting more than you actually are when it comes to buying things like cosmetics.But are they breaking rules?U.S. consumers spent billion in 2017 on cosmetic products.  Makeup enthusiast Alex Langer says she’s never really paid close attention to the amount of product inside the fancy cosmetic bottles."Unless you're a mathematician, you don't know what that really is," says Langer.The NOW’s investigative team looked at some popular brands and found some tricky packaging that seems misleading. (Disclaimer: we are not mathematicians)"I think that there is an ethical issue with trying to convey that there is more in that package than there really is," says marketing expert Darrin Duber-Smith.The NOW looked at two different oils from Olay products. One actually had more product than the other. The company is using what marketers refer to as "downsizing," which started a decade ago."You can make your package thicker, and that way it holds less stuff,” explains Duber-Smith. “You can put a false bottom or a thicker bottom at the bottom…you can fill it, not all the way to the top."Another product from e.l.f. looked as if it was full of product, but when you start unscrewing things and pulling if apart, you learn quickly that looks are very deceiving."Competitors have to kind of have larger packages in order to convey the perception that there's more and more product in there," explains Duber-Smith.Companies, however, cannot lie about the amount on the product’s label. The companies are required to be precise about what’s included on labels and the product amount is included."We have labeling requirements,” explains Duber-Smith. “We have regulatory agencies that do oversee these things."Packaging can change your perception dramatically. Each bottle of foundation we looked at differed in design, but the amount in the bottles were the same."I would agree completely that it's very misleading to consumers,” Duber-Smith says. “And my feeling is that if your intent is to deceive you have an ethical issue."So before you purchase your next beauty product, pay attention and make sure you are checking the labels; don't be deceived by pretty packaging. 2264

  

Cooking shows are popular and can be addicting to watch. However, one self-proclaimed diet guru believes shows like the "The Great American Baking Show" should come with a warning that it advocates obesity.Do cooking shows really have an effect on how much watchers end up consuming? Eight in 10 adults watch cooking shows, according to research by MarketingCharts.com.    Many of those cooking shows don’t necessarily promote healthy eating. But Dr. Kevin Masters, a professor of psychology at University of Colorado Denver, says you can’t correlate obesity to cooking shows.“The overweight and obesity issue in this country is around--depending on your numbers-- is 60 to 70 percent of the population,” says Masters. “And you’re talking about a very small population even watch these shows, much less we could say are influenced by them.”   However, Marketing Charts research also found that 57 percent of those who watch these cooking shows purchase food as a direct result of something they saw on the show.   "Some people will plant a thought that they weren't having before,” Dr. Masters explains. “Will it actually lead to action in a particular instance? That's going to depend on a whole lot of other factors."  Dr. Masters says you might have people make or buy fatty, sugary food after watching a cooking show, but that doesn't mean these shows are the direct cause of people in America being overweight.   "I think what's more likely is the audience attracted to those shows--maybe an audience that's more attracted to that kind of eating anyway--and finds something in the show that's of interest to them."   1689
