A task that once took days has been reduced to hours, thanks to the use of drones and laser technology. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography is mapping the shoreline of San Diego's coast to study beach and cliff erosion. The new technology, paid for by the California State Parks and the Army Corps of Enginners, has made that task much easier."This is allowing us to get a more comprehensive view of the beach and the cliffs," says lead researcher Adam Young.Young and his team will drive the entire coast from La Jolla to Oceanside twice a year. They're using a laser enhanced camera and a drone to create a 3D map of the coast. Over time, they'll be able to compare the maps and see where and how the beach is eroding."We're going to have to start looking to the future," Young says. "And we're not going to be able to prepare properly unless we collect data and understand what's happening now."In addition to the twice yearly studies, Young says they'll look at sand levels after storms and at how sand moves throughout the year.Young says it can help predict what areas of the cliffs are susceptible to collapse. 1139
A Phoenix restaurant caught a woman posing as a high school cheer mom to pocket money. The employees at Fry Bread House were skeptical when a woman came in asking for donations.“She told us our manager had ordered us brownies and cookies for a donation,” said Chef Kris Harris. The woman said the money would go to the Xavier College Preparatory cheer squad.Fry Bread House employees called their owner. She spoke with the woman and quickly realized they were being scammed. The restaurant alerted Xavier officials, who had already received two other reports of this same behavior. “I guess she just looked like a normal woman trying to raise money for her kid,” Harris explained. “It kind of blows your mind. I guess everybody is trying to find a new way to get something.”Xavier officials confirmed the scam and want people to be aware. 874

A small explosion from the Halema'uma'u crater in Hawaii's Kilauea volcano at about midnight local time created an ash cloud that reached up to 10,000 feet, according to an alert from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.More explosive events like the one on Friday could make for minor amounts of ashfall downwind at any time, and volcanic ash emissions remain high.In addition, fast-moving lava crossed a road and threatened dozens of homes, prompting National Guard helicopters to airlift residents from Hawaii's lower Puna area.Hawaii officials warned residents in affected areas to shelter in place Friday night and await further instructions. The lava forced the closure of Pohoiki Road, cutting off at least 40 homes, the Hawaii County Civil Defense said. The agency urged residents near Highway 137 to be ready for voluntary evacuations should the threat grow."With fresher, hotter magma, there's the potential that the lava flows can move with greater ease and therefore cover more area," US Geological Survey geologist Janet Babb told CNN affiliate Hawaii News Now.Resident Ikaika Marzo said the lava flow has left him and his neighbors rattled. It sounds like 10 or 20 jets taking off from your backyard at the same time, he told the affiliate."It's been like hell," he said. "It's like huge grenades going off. It shakes the whole community."Volcanic gas emissions at the summit remain high and additional explosions are possible at any time, the observatory said. 1479
