Also, officials report that the complex's general manager has been detained for questioning.An initial investigation points to the fire originating on the mall's first floor, where home appliances and cosmetic products are sold, but soon spread to the fifth floor. Clothes, bed covers, quilts and other highly flammable goods were on display from the second to fourth floors.Following the mall fire, the Ministry of Public Security issued a circular ordering fire departments across the country to learn from the incident, stay on high alert, and review prevention measures to guard against similar incidents.The circular reported that casualties in the Jilin mall fire were the biggest since 2009. BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- China is expressing its concern about the European Union's investigations into Chinese-made wireless wide area networking (WWAN) modems, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) on Thursday.Yao Jian, the spokesman, made the remarks after the EU said it was conducting an anti-subsidy investigation into the devices.The EU launched investigations of anti-dumping and supporting measures on the WWAN modems from China on June 30, 2010. It is the first time the EU has made simultaneous triple investigations on a China-made product, Yao said.The move is unheard of for World Trade Organization members when dealing with trade remedy cases in practice, Yao said. The Chinese public and people working in the industry showed strong dissatisfaction towards the EU's practice.The WWAN modems are high-tech products that are constantly updated. GUANGZHOU, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in south China's Guangzhou, host city of the 2010 Asian Games, Saturday said it will cancel a newly-launched free public transportation service due to the enormous public response, which might pose a security threat to the Asian Games.The government earlier this month launched the color-coding scheme for vehicles, effectively grounding half of the city's 2.1 million private cars and those entering the city each day during the Asian Games.As a remedy, free public transport service was to be offered for 30 working days beginning November 1.The offer was met with unprecedented enthusiasm from Guangzhou residents.
