CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - This week, we've heard promises surrounding treatment and vaccines related to COVID-19.Now, doctors at the University of North Carolina (UNC) are using next-generation genetic sequencing of the virus causing COVID-19 that can help testing and therapeutics.Dr. Dirk Dittmer, professor of microbiology and immunology at the UNC School of Medicine, has kept a close eye on COVID-19.“We know now more about this virus than any other virus before,” Dittmer told News 3. “The team has been working 24/7 ever since we had the first cases in March.”He and others are looking at how next-generation genetic sequencing can help with tracking mutations of the virus.“What we were looking at using next-generation technology is if the virus changes, who is the first person that had the virus in North Carolina? And, as we accumulated more and more cases, were these the same types of viruses we're seeing anywhere else in the world,” Dittmer said. “Very early on, we were able to show that one of the mutations that have been around in Europe was actually coming to the U.S.”The state-funded study shows this sequencing can help with the accuracy of diagnostic testing and vaccine effectiveness.“We wanted to make sure that the tests that were developed very early on would still work now and next year. CAMP PENDLETON (CNS) - A man was killed on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton Saturday morning when his Chevrolet Suburban overturned, landed on the right side of the freeway and was struck by a second car.The deadly sequence of events happened a little before 3 a.m. on the northbound side of I-5 past Basilone Road, near San Onofre State Beach and not far from the Orange County line.A 25-year-old San Clemente man was behind the wheel of the Suburban when it left the road and went up an embankment before flipping over and coming to rest on the right shoulder, California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Latulippe said.Shortly afterward, a Nissan Rouge driven by a 46-year-old Tijuana man approached the wreck and struck the disabled Suburban, Latulippe said.Passing drivers stopped to assist the Suburban driver, who was found unresponsive outside his car on the right shoulder.It's unclear if he exited the SUV after the initial crash, or was thrown from it during the second collision, Latulippe said.Emergency personnel from the Camp Pendleton Fire Department headed to the crash, but the Suburban driver died at the scene, Latulippe said. The man's name was not immediately released.No information on the condition of the Rogue driver was available.Drugs and alcohol were not considered to be factors in the crash, Latulippe said.Northbound lanes of I-5 were congested through the area for about an hour after the crash while officials investigated. 1460

(KGTV) — Carlsbad Police arrested a man they believe tried to break into multiple homes early Saturday.Police say 26-year-old Esparza Alan Arias, of Los Angeles, was arrested Saturday and charged with residential burglary and other charges. Police are asking residents to check their cameras if they have any for images of Arias.Police say the first incident happened in the 6500 block of Paseo Frontera at about 12:30 a.m., though the victim didn't report it until about 1:30 a.m. Police say while inside, Arias reportedly touched the male resident while he was sleeping and woke him up. Arias then fled after being confronted, police said.The second incident happened just after 1:10 a.m. in the 2900 block of Unicornio St. Residents awoke to find Arias in their home, and he fled after being confronted, according to police.Just before 1:30 a.m., a third incident occurred in the 3000 block of Xana Way. Police say a resident of the home found Arias trying to enter and confronted the suspect through a window. Arias fled and the resident walked outside and fired a warning gunshot into the air, police added.Police were investigating the other incidents when they heard the gunshot. Arias was found nearby hiding behind a vehicle, police say.Arias was booked into Vista Detention Facility.Police ask anyone in the area to check their cameras and call 760-931-3819 to report any sightings of Arias. 1426
