According to Climate Central, nearly 5 million people live less than 4 feet above high tide across the United States, and scientists expect roughly another 2 to 7 more feet of sea level rise this century.Imperial Beach is one of the most vulnerable in California to sea-level rise as it experiences flooding during periods of extreme high tides and winter swell. 10News looked into a program designed to give people ample warning, called The Resilient Futures program. The goal is to create a flood alert system through a network of instruments to measure local wave and water levels monitored by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography giving scientists and emergency managers a 3 to 4 day head-start to help determine where extreme tides may occur."It is something people are concerned about, and they want to know how often is this likely to occur. As sea levels continue to rise, what’s the change and risk as time goes on.” says Mark Merrifield, the Director of the Coastal Data Information Program at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He goes on to say, “just like it helps to have a weather forecast if there’s going to be an extreme rain event or wind event coming up. (KGTV) - The Holy Fire flare up in the Cleveland National Forest has grown to 150 acres with 10 percent containment, though crews are said to be making "good progress."According to the Orange County Fire Authority, the goal at this point is to protect communication towers and infrastructure atop Santiago Peak. U.S. Forest Service officials said the fire broke out in the Santiago Peak area of the Cleveland National Forest at about 10 a.m.According to officials, "5 air tankers and 4 helicopters have been assigned. Ground resources will be utilized when it is safe to do so.” 591

A 36-year-old Washington woman is claiming that a DNA test she took on Ancestry.com showed that her biological father was her parents' fertility doctor, the Washington Post reported. According to the Washington Post, Kelli Rowlette's DNA test claimed that she had a parent-child relationship with Gerald E. Mortimer, a fertility doctor in Idaho. Rowlette said she did not know her mother used artificial insemination. The doctor had diagnosed Rowlette's father with low sperm count and her mother with a tipped uterus. Mortimer recommended inseminating Rowlette's mother with sperm from both her husband and an anonymous sperm donor. According to the Washington Post, the couple asked for a donor who was at least 6-foot-tall, in college and had brown hair and blue eyes. Mortimer had told her parents that he used a match for the sperm donation. Mortimer did not meet Rowlette's parents standards for sperm donation. Mortimer was also listed as Rowlette's delivery doctor, and signed her birth certificate. A lawsuit has been filed in federal court against Mortimer for fraud and medical negligence.To read the Washington Post's full report, click here.  1273

This will support nonprofit groups that are serving those affected by the wildfires.The Humane Society of Ventura County needs horse water troughs and horse electrolytes. Supplies should be taken to the shelter at 402 Bryant St. in Ojai. The shelter is also welcoming cash donations on its website.The United Way of Greater Los Angeles started a disaster relief fund for fire victims.The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control has opened multiple shelter sites to take in animals displaced by the fires. Cash donations to the Los Angeles County Animal Care Foundation's Noah's Legacy Fund will support the department's disaster relief efforts.The Red Cross Los Angeles Region would like cash donations on its website or over the phone at 1-800-RED-CROSS.
