SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just after President Donald Trump addressed the nation about border security, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Barrio Logan held an event to recruit volunteers to help at asylum shelters. “The primary purpose was to let people know from a more personal perspective what’s taking place with the caravan,” said Father John Auther, pastor at Our Lady. The volunteers work with the San Diego Rapid Response Network to help the migrants who make it across the border.Several people who had volunteered in the past got up to speak about their experiences. “If I thought I was humble, it’s made me more humble. It’s rewarding,” said Martha Carriedo. She has volunteered for months at the shelter which is housed in an undisclosed location in San Diego. It serves as a temporary refuge for asylum seekers who have made it through the border legally but need help finding a way to meet with friends or family. Or if they don’t have any connections in the U.S., to find a sponsor or longer-term housing option while they wait for their asylum case to be heard. Just Call Us Volunteers are preparing a special Christmas dinner for hundreds of homeless. 30 gallons of stock, 75 pounds of green beans and more than 270 pounds of turkey are just some of the items being served on the dinner menu. Just Call Us Volunteers is strictly made up of volunteers who want to give back. The group will serve at least three homeless shelters around the county on Christmas Day. They offer food to at least “350 at the tent downtown, the Alpha Project tent. We probably got 65 at Rachel’s Women's Shelter and 65 at the San Diego Center for Children,” says Julie Darling, organizer of Just Call Us Volunteers. The food is donated from Specialty Produce, Cupcakes Squared and Sprouts Farmers Markets. The organization says their volunteer list is full for Christmas Day but they give back all year long. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Malls across San Diego County did not experience the rush of last-minute shoppers on Christmas Eve, as the coronavirus continues to take its toll on the economy and life in general."We used to have to have the employees park in a different section that was further away so it left the open spots for customers, we haven't needed to do that this year," said Caitlin Todd, manager at Grossmont Center's Prevue Formal and Bridal.Todd said other than Target and Sees, the mall has been less busy this holiday season. She said it's not just the economy, but also that the coronavirus has made in-person shopping a more practical matter. "With restaurants not having as much ability to have indoor dining or outdoor dining, it's been more of a 'come, get what you need and leave,' kind of shopping experience, versus an all-day thing with the family," she said. The virus has taken a toll on the retail industry, with employment in department stores down 28% compared to the same time last year. Malls have instituted social distancing, limited entertainment, and retailers are limited to 20% capacity - meaning lines to get in. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday, and as part of "America Reads," the United Way of San Diego is holding a week-long book drive across San Diego County."Reading to children is the utmost important thing a parent can do," says United Way CEO Nancy Sasaki.The United Way will accept book donations at their office, and also at any SDCCU branch location across the county. They're also teaming up with Warwick's Book Store in La Jolla for donations.The need is most significant among low-income families. The United Way says 61% of low-income families in San Diego don't have any books in their homes for kids. That puts them at a significant disadvantage."If a kid is not at a 3rd-grade reading level by the end of third grade, we know they're four times more likely not to graduate high school on time," says Sasaki. "And if they come from low-income communities, they're six times more likely to fall behind."Studies show that reading to children as few as three times each week helps promote vocabulary and reading proficiency."In many family settings where the parents are working 2 or 3 jobs, and they're crossing paths in the night, and they're barely able to get the food on the table, reading is not so easy to do," Sasaki says.
