SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The three-day California Democratic Party State Convention begins Friday at the San Diego Convention Center with a series of caucus meetings, workshops and panel discussions.The approximately 3,400 delegates will vote Saturday on endorsements for governor, U.S. senator and other statewide offices.The delegates will adopt the 2018 party platform Sunday and ratify earlier endorsements for congressional and legislative races.Keynote speeches will be delivered Saturday by Sens. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three thieves, one armed with a gun, assaulted a man Monday during a pre-dawn home-invasion robbery in a Bay Terraces-area neighborhood. The victim spotted the trio of burglars inside the house in the 7100 block of Terra Cotta Road about 3:30 a.m., according to San Diego police. One of the intruders pointed a gun at the man while demanding valuables along with his cohorts, Officer Frank Cali said. During the confrontation, at least one of the robbers hit the victim with an unidentified object. After gathering property from inside the residence, the thieves fled in a stolen maroon 2011 Toyota RAV4, California license No. 6UJW830. The victim described the burglars as teenage boys or young men in their late teens or early 20s, dressed in dark clothing. No serious injuries were reported. 820

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A classic Corvette nearly careened into a family's home Friday night, with a teenager behind the wheel. "Oh yea, we were just on the other side of the wall that she was just inches from hitting," said Tyler Churchill. El Cajon police say the 16-year-old driver was probably driving too fast down the hill."We have a lot of really nice cars that live up the street," Churchill said. "They come flying by all the time."She lost control, ending up with the car backward and on top of some cement blocks.Churchill and his family came running out when they heard the crash."We were all just hanging in the garage," he said. "I was changing a dirt bike tire, we heard a really long screech and a kind of gnarly crash, and we couldn't see anything because it was really dusty."Thankfully, the driver and everyone else made it out okay. "The first thing we did was run out and make sure she was ok," Churchill said. "I just can't believe she came down that driveway, missed cars by a few inches, missed my house by a few inches, I mean it was really just inches from everything, it was crazy." 1128

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Barrio Logan business is on a mission to help students become the first in their family to go to college. Called the Barrio Logan College Institute, the business helps kids learn how to get into college. The program began in 1996 and helps students from third grade all the way through college. So far, 204 students have participated in the program. The programs offered are free, but parents are required to donate their time. The business began out of the need to help students in underserved communities. According to the institute, only three percent of adults age 25 and older in Barrio Logan have a bachelor’s degree. The institute also says only 38 percent of those 25 and older in the community have a high school diploma. Through the institute, many students have been able to go on to attend college. 88 percent of students who have gone through the Barrio Logan College Institute’s College Success Program remain in college working toward a degree. For now, the institute is focused on moving to a new location within the Barrio Logan Community, so far raising .1 million of the needed .5 million to buy the building. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 91-year-old woman died and a younger woman was injured in a crash in Clairemont Friday. The crash happened about 11:30 a.m. in the 6000 block of Balboa Avenue, near Mt. Alifan Drive, authorities said.The older woman was driving south on Mt. Alifan in a gray Toyota Camry. Police said the Camry and a car driven by a 32-year-old woman collided in the intersection of Balboa Ave.Wreckage was strewn across the Auto Zone parking lot at 6085 Balboa Ave.The 91-year-old woman, who has not been identified, died at the scene. The younger woman suffered minor scrapes and bruises, police said.The cause of the collision is unknown. Police said it was possible a car may have run a red light, leading to the crash.Balboa Avenue is closed in both directions from the 6000 block (Mt. Alifan Dr.) to 6600 block (Mt. Albertine Ave.) near Lindbergh/Schweitzer Elementary School. Police believe the road will reopen about 3 p.m. 973
