SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Crews are clearing out a large homeless encampment hidden out of sight. It’s so big, it’s taking crews three days to clear the area in Webster. Trash, soiled clothes and old food containers is only a small list of what the eight man crew had to clean up. Stephen Driver, with the Alpha Project Abatement team says the area is, “really filthy. There’s urine bottles all over the place, buckets with human feces, dead animals. You name it.”The Alpha Project Abatement team cleared a stretch of Federal Boulevard. The homeless camp was tucked away near a flood channel. Driver says most of these camps are not easily seen. The Alpha Project crew is contracted with the City of San Diego. They work with the city’s Environmental Services Department to clear the mess. “Sometimes the people are here but usually they’re packing up and leaving once we get here,” says Driver. Police were on hand to make sure crews were safe. The city gave the people living there about a week’s notice about the cleanup. The Alpha Project offers a number of resources for the homeless, including a bridge shelter in downtown. If you need to report a homeless encampment with the city of San Diego, officials recommend you use the city's Get It Done app. 1257

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than .4 million over three months across San Diego County's ports of entry, according to the agency.CBP says the undeclared money bound for Mexico was seized between April and June at ports of entry including Calexico, Otay Mesa, Cross Border Xpress, San Ysidro, and Tecate, CBP says. One of the largest stops occurred in May when a vehicle was stopped in Otay Mesa and discovered money hidden in boxes with other items in the cargo area of the vehicle."These various interdictions by our vigilant officers are just a fraction of the regular attempts we see during the year," said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. "This is a demonstration of our officers’ efforts in stopping the illegal movement between our borders." 828

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Before the sun rose Friday, cars already packed parking lots at San Diego beaches to kick off Labor Day weekend and what's expected to the some of the hottest days of summer. However, San Diego County leaders said no matter where you are this weekend, they want to emphasize people must still follow CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19.ABC 10News was at La Jolla Shores on Friday morning as beachgoers wearing masks secured spots far enough to stay socially distanced.Beachgoer and Santee resident Kris Moberly, “We know we can find a spot if we come early."It's the new norm, but also a way to ensure San Diego stays off the state's watchlist after just getting off of it two weeks ago.Moberly said she hopes everyone will follow the rules this weekend, telling ABC 10News, "I'm sure there's people who push the limits but you're responsible for your own health and I think most people are considerate of others."San Diego Lifeguards said they won't be regulating when it comes to social distancing or masks."We're going to be focused on keeping people safe in the water, but social distancing is everyone's responsibility,” a lifeguard told ABC 10News.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the status of our county depends on people's actions this weekend. In a press conference earlier this week, he said people should avoid indoor parties and continue to follow CDC guidelines. To ensure added safety, beaches like Carlsbad will also be handing out masks and teaching visitors about safety guidelines.Lifeguards said in addition to COVID-19 restrictions, the heat will also be a big safety factor. They said beachgoers should bring plenty of water and use caution when swimming, as upcoming swells are expected to bring fast moving rip currents. 1789

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Cruise ship cancellations amid the Coronavirus pandemic have cost the region more than 0 million in lost economic activity, according to the Port of San Diego. The Port says since March, 75 cruises have canceled, meaning a 6 million loss in retail, restaurant, lodging and related transportation and shipping services. The 2020-2021 season, which was supposed to start Sept. 13, has already seen 49 cancellations. "When it’s safe for sailings to resume, we will do what we can to work with and support our cruise and public health partners to ensure the safety of cruise passengers, terminal staff, and the public," the Port said in a statement. The loss is hitting tourism-related businesses, already suffering from a loss of conventions, and social distancing restrictions. Chuck Abbott, general manager of the Intercontinental Hotel San Diego, just steps from the terminal, said cruisers usually stay a night pre or post cruise."It's still an amount of business that comes, which is beneficial," he said. "They're on leisure, and those people usually like to dine out and enjoy things."The CDC has halted cruising through at least Sept. 30. If that expires, San Diego's next arrival would be Nov. 5 through the Carnival Miracle. Some European cruise lines have once again started sailing, with capacity limits and social distancing restrictions. Doug Shupe, of the Auto Club of Southern California, said there is pent up demand for cruising, so once people feel safe, he expects bookings to be robust. 1538
