PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — As the coronavirus continues to grip parts of South Florida, there are growing concerns over hospitalizations and the numbers of intensive care unit beds available.Last week the Sunshine State hit another grim milestone with more than 1,800 hospitalizations — the highest in a single day since the start of the pandemic, according to state records.Many hospitals are taking action against the record-setting numbers.Some hospitals in the state, including Bethesda East, Bethesda West and Boca Raton Regional Center in South Florida, are now rescheduling elective procedures that require overnight stays to help free up space.In Florida, 56 hospital ICUs have hit capacity and another 35 hospitals show ICU bed availability of 10% or less.As of Wednesday morning, many Palm Beach County hospital ICUs were reportedly near capacity.Florida Gov. Ron Desantis said hospitals are seeing more patients who are coming in for other reasons and then learning they have COVID-19. He added that is part of the reason the positive numbers are rising."People didn't all of the sudden stop having heart attacks," DeSantis said. People of color and allies are participating in Blackout Day on Tuesday to support the African American community and Black-owned businesses.Blackout Day is an economic protest organized by The Blackout Coalition. Participants are asked not to spend any money on July 7, but if they must spend, they’re asked to do so only at Black-owned businesses.The coalition says the movement is exclusively targeted at empowering and uplifting Black people, but it welcomes all people of color to stand in solidarity with them. The organization says it also welcomes allies who choose to participate in the protest, but leaders say they “make absolutely no apology for the fact this movement is FOR US & BY US.”The goal of the protest is to highlight the buying power of African Americans. In 2018, Black buying power reached .3 trillion, up from 0 billion in 1990, according to Nielsen.“This is only the beginning of a lifelong pursuit of economic empowerment as a reality for ALL BLACK PEOPLE,” the organization wrote on its “about” page. “United, we are an unstoppable force. We are a nation of people within this nation that at any time can demand our liberation by withholding our dollars. If we can do it for a day, we can do it for a week, a month, a quarter, a year…and one day we will look up and it will be a way of life.”The protest comes in the wake of nationwide protests against police brutality following the death of multiple Black people, most notably George Floyd in Minneapolis on Memorial Day. OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - R.J. Donovan State Prison houses some of California’s most infamous inmates but is now getting attention for testing innovative rehabilitation methods.One of the projects is an ambitious, 1,000-foot long mural scaling the concrete walls of part of the prison known as Echo Yard.It’s being spearheaded by inmates Erik and Lyle Menendez. The two gained notoriety in the 1990s for their highly publicized murder trial, when they were convicted of killing their wealthy parents in their Beverly Hills home. But in April of 2018, they were reunited at Donovan State Prison in Echo Yard. 10News got a glimpse at their life together behind bars. Lyle and Erik declined to be interviewed but showed off part of the mural project they’ve been involved in.The mural depicts landmarks across San Diego including Balboa Park, the Point Cabrillo lighthouse and the historic Mission San Diego de Alcala.The project came about thanks to help from Brahman Kyrie, a volunteer who had been running yoga and meditation classes in the prison. “There’s got to be consequences but there also has to be the love,” said Kyrie.She said the idea of the murals came from a conversation with the Menendez brothers.“I spoke to Lyle and Erik who had been thinking about the beautification,” she recalled.WATCH: WHAT IS THE ECHO YARDWith the help of volunteers from SDSU and with outside donations from Visions Quality Coatings and Encore Art Paint, they began the project in 2019.Echo Yard is classified as a “mixed” yard, bringing together inmates of different security levels on the premise that they will coexist peacefully in exchange for some freedoms.“I do it for therapy, it keeps me grounded,” said inmate David Armstrong about the mural project.“It’s giving me a peace of mind,” echoed Ruben Radillo, an inmate who will be getting out of prison at the end of February after a 25-year sentence.“Don’t be afraid of me,” he said. “I’m going to be a good neighbor, thanks to projects like this. Police in Connecticut says they've arrested a Jerry Thompson for allegedly decapitating his landlord.Hartford Police Department officials say they were called to a residence Sunday afternoon to check on the well being of Victor King, who neighbors had not seen in over a day.When officers arrived at the house, they found King's body on the kitchen floor, partially covered up with a sheet."It was soon discovered that the victim had sustained severe trauma to several parts of his body by means of a bladed instrument," officials said in a press release to E.W. Scripps.King called police Saturday morning, stating that he and his roommate Thompson were reportedly disputing over rent, CNN reported. But police officials tell E.W. Scripps that "the accused has been non-verbal for the past three months, as claimed by the landlord. There is no record of an 'argument.'""A suspected murder weapon, a samurai sword, was recovered 10 miles away in the Farmington River by members of the HPD Dive Team after the suspect was arrested," officials told E.W. PHOENIX (KNXV/KGTV) - A small plane that crashed on a Phoenix street Monday morning -- killing both passengers  -- was just sold from a pilot in Solana Beach.The victims have been identified as 54 year-old Theodore Rich and 49 year-old Elaine Carpenter. FAA officials said the aircraft involved is a single-engine, home-built Acroduster. The plane went down in the intersection of 7th St. and Deer Valley Dr., near an FBI field office, at around 6:50 a.m. local time.One eyewitness said he saw the plane go down. At first he thought it was aerobatics, but after seeing the plane heading straight for the ground, he knew something was wrong. Video from the scene showed emergency crews working around debris in the roadway near several damaged cars. Police told media on scene the vehicles had substantial damage but no one on the ground was hurt.10News reporter Lauren Davis talked to Avi Maltzman, the Solana Beach man who just sold the plane to Rich this weekend. Maltzman said he flew with Rich for several touch-and-goes and described Rich as an experienced pilot. Maltzman said Rich even called him from Arizona just to let him know he made it home safely. “He impressed me very well with his flight skills. He did good eight or nine landings. He was comfortable and I felt comfortable with him," said Maltzman.Maltzman said the plane was built by professionally in Santa Barbara in 1993. Maltzman bought the plane in 2011 and said it was in great condition. Those who knew Rich said flying was his passion. They said Rich died doing what he loved.    1614
